Title: New AR hand guard
Post by: fightingquaker13 on November 24, 2011, 01:02:43 PM
I'm going to buy a new hand guard for my Sportical as I want to mount a sling and some BUIS on the thing. For that I need a front rail. I am not going to shell out the $$$ for an expensive aluminum free floated model (unles you have one to sell cheap).  I am torn between the Magpul MOE and the TAPCO Intrafuse. I am currently leaning Tapco, but I can easily be persuaded either way. They are both south of $50 and that sounds good to me.

I'd go with the MagPul as well.
I had TapCo hand guards on an AK, and I have a MagPul stock on my AR, I like the Magpul quality better.

The trouble with the Magpul MOE is that I can't tell from the catalogs or even their site is whether you can put rails on top for a sight, or whether it assumes that you have an A2 style sight on your carbine. It mentions rail mounts at two, ten, and six, but says nothing about twelve. Does anyone know? Because if it does I'll get it over the TAPCO, but otherwise its TAPCO as I know it has a top rail. I'd like to order today as Midway is having a pretty big sale "today only" ::), on Golden sabre ($19 for 147 9mm and $15 for .38 +P) and I'd just as soon not pay for shipping twice.
Thanks

On the MOE you can not put rails on top... Only the sides and bottom.  But my exp. stay away from crapco.  I've had nothing but trouble with there stuff.

just a comment on handguard vs. full float.... my first AR in the mid 80s, an SP1 with the GI clip on bipod attached to the thin barrel could be "bent" about 2' at 200m.....or somewhere in between... my current 16" Rock River intermediate gas upper with factory round tube will shoot 4" at 400m

to reach the full potential for your AR, I would suggest a full float tube... roll over fixed sights can be aligned with a round tube with a simple mill cut down the bottom of the rail... you can place the sights in the position you choose, not a manufacturer

I also prefer a float to a Delta Ring. Read somewhere about harmonics, affecting accuracy at longer ranges from a 16" barrel, but I consider it more of a "close quarters" platform.... Plus IMHO, it's just more tacticool.... ;)

If I want to reach out, I go bigger caliber... ::)

I think I'm going to go magpul. I talked to Midway and they SAY it will take an upper rail. If not, they should take a return. Hell, for $30 plus $14 for the rails, vs $100++++ for other aluminum hanguards it seems worth a shot. Heck, the only thing I've heard bad about the Tapco is that its too fat. I figure I'll try cheap first. Its not  like the GI plastic hand guards are all that great, so whats to lose?

The slots in Magpul MOE forend is where the rails go.  You would have to buy them separate.  They finally came out with a specifically designed forend grip which was better than the rail (alot sturdy than the one I got originally)  There finally making MOE attachments that are better than the standard cheap rail system.  I'd go with the MOE I like it better if I don't grip the forened grip.  It does wrap around the gas block so you would be able to use the Sporticals rails for a BUIS
or just get a rail to attach to the top of the MOE

You have to have a front ring to retain the Magpul handguards, they normally only show them with FSB's but they work just fine with a railed gas block as long as you keep the front ring too. I've got a mid-length set up this way with a front sight on the gas block. I agree with the consensus, stay away from "Crapco" stuff. It's about the same quality of UTG stuff. You can mount a rail section on top of the Magpul handguards if you want but you'll need to drill to do it. That being said I wouldn't put sights on a top rail when you'd get a much better sight radius and a more solid platform with a railed gas block.

Thanks, but a bit late. I just got mine the other day. I haven't tried to install it yet. Did you find you needed a delta wrench or could you do it ok by hand?

Not sure what you are talking about here, the add-on rail is a "bolt on attachment so you will need ,probably an Allen wrench.
The hand guards them selves don't require a wrench, that's something they sell for the "gadget happy".
Just slip a flat tip screw driver between the hand guard and the slip ring to pry against the spring tension and it will pop right on.

I could depress the delta ring in mine by hand to install the MOE handguard, but that probably depends on each rifle's specs. There is a tool you could use, but I am too cheap to try something that may work better.

Thanks,

Patrick

The D ring wrench I used fits in the magwell and works a ton better than a screwdriver worth the $13
Since my MOE is on a Sportical too. BUT that's my buck fifty.

I tried the screwdriver thing and I cut the living daylights out of my hands

Actually I never had a problem with it.  ???

Put the front of the hand guard in its retainer, slip the screw driver between the rear of the hand guard and the spring loaded ring and slip it in.
