Title: Recommendation for a good book on Barry Goldwater
Post by: fullautovalmet76 on November 25, 2011, 02:19:30 PM
Biographies that are well balanced and give good insight to the man and his legacy is what I'm looking for. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I wouldn't mind adding to the reading list either.

My Father, is/was a Goldwater Supporter. I read Before The Storm when it came out in 2001. I need to read it again.

If your angled toward a biographical angle, With No Apologies is more along those lines.

Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. And moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.

Thanks, TW. I placed a few requests at the library. I'm sure I'll enjoy them.

Sad that the Republican establishment, in addition to the Democrats, both allied to his defeat in 64'... I think a lot of history would have changed for the better had he become Pres.

Nothing wrong with "rocking the boat".....

And here we agree. He was the last real libertarian. Pro-choice, pro gay rights, pro-gun, anti-drug war, anti interventionist, anti-welfare state, pro-states rights, pro-freemarket. God, if he had won this would have been a much deifferent, and I think a much better, country. Reagan sold out to the Bible thumpers and gave us the war on drugs and the "culture wars". Barry told them to piss up a rope and read the Constitution. He said the same thing to the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons. When was the last time a Presidential candidate said I have no position because its not the federal governments business? It makes Ron Paul look better. :-\

I spotted the "anti interventionist" comment, If by that you are referring to "nation building" (trying to make little America's out of third world shitholes) I'll go along.
If you mean not kicking the sh!t out of one of those shitholes that tries to screw with us, (does not show proper respect to some one who can convert them into a "blue feature )
Then I will have to disagree.
I'm against nation building, but I favor gun boat diplomacy.
The Army was formed to "Defend America", The Navy and Marines were formed as projectable power, it is their job wreck stuff , kill people, and personally abuse foreign leaders.

It was the former. Kicking the crap out of the Taliban was called for. Trying to turn Afghanistan (Afghanistan? Seriously, that Afghanistan?) into a Jeffersonian democracy is a fool's errand. Aid allies, bomb enemies, and otherwise mind your own business.

Goldwater was prepared to do what needed to be done to protect the country.

One of the major factors in his loss was the media giving constant coverage saying that he would use nuclear weapons.

He was asked in an interview if he would use nukes to defend the country if necessary and he said yes....

The way it was portrayed in the media helped give him the loss.

No one seemed to ask what the other candidates would do...   Let the country be taken?

In either case, he was the only one with balls enough to tell the truth.
