I used to live in Montana where we had lots of bears and cats. I have since moved to Az where that is much less of a problem. I have a stainless Taurus tracker 44 mag that I never shoot. I am thinking of selling and reallocating a glock 19 or 23. Something that I would shoot more and would have more function. I want a ccw gun that has a bit more capacity than what I currently carry. I have read some of Rob Pincus's latest coins of wisdom in which he makes a compelling argument for the 9mm. I currently do not own a 9mm and think i should get one.
Any thoughts guys?

MB carries a 9mm in one of several guises and says he doesn't feel undergunned! If I pick up a 9 I will carry Corbon DPX. I prefer the Gen 1 Glock in any cal. because of the finger grooves in the later gens. The 26 might be a viable option for you, especially CCW. I tried the 26, M&P sub and the SA XD sub and the XD was better FOR ME! I might go that way or maybe a Ruger SC9.
Richard
PS: Nothing wrong with the .40 S&W either in MHOFWIWWAS!

G 26 and 27 are not gonna be viable options for me. I had a 27 and got rid of it because it was too small for my hand. I am leaning heavily towards a g 19
-
I love my XDs, I've got a Taurus Millium Pro but should have held out for the Taurus 709.
-
I keep telling myself that with modern ammo the 9mm is a perfectly acceptable round for social work. But I keep carrying my .45acp. ;D
Now if you are talking about four legged critters, I would not carry a 9mm if I thought I'd run into anything bigger than a coyote.
Oh, and the grip angle on a Glock is wrong for me so I can't help you there.
-
I have three 3rd gen Glocks (19, 26, and 20) and love them. If the grip angle and size works for you, I say get the 19. I actually like the finger grooves, but I don't have really big hands. For ccw, the 19 is almost as concealable as the 26 and feels a lot better in the hand to me. I carry the 26 more because it does provide a little more concealment, and I carry around people who may call me out if the spot it. With good hollowpoints, I don't feel undergunned at all.
I have never shot a 23, but it's the same size as the 19 and should feel and conceal the same. I can't afford to feed too many calibers and like the interchangeability between my two primaries (the 26 and 19). Therefore, I wouldn't rule out the 23 if you already have a couple of .40 caliber guns and don't want to start stocking up on another caliber.

Since you are looking for a CCW/plinker I think 9MM is fine bearing in mind what Ichiban posted.
As I have often posted, the only valid complaints I have heard about the Glock is that some don't like the grip, and unless you shot your revolver Double action a lot you may not care for the trigger, but that is not confined to Glocks. All DA pistols have a longer trigger pull than SA shooters may be used to.
Handle a few other brands, shoot some if you can, if the Glock is comfortable to you it's a good choice.
It's not a 1911, but after 25 years it's safe to say it is a proven design.

I HATE GLOCKS.... But I do carry them at times, a #36 with a spring clip and a #26 with a spring clip.
I love the 1911,,, but alas, there very hard to carry for ccw.....
I find myself carrying my "discovery Card" (a kel-tec P3AT) "I don't leave home without it")
Funny..... Did you know in Fla when you ware cargo shorts, you can put a glock 26 with a 33 round mag in the front pocket and no one will notice it?

A mouse gun in your pocket has better stopping power than a 1911 left in the vehicle or safe ;D
What is your beef about Glocks ?
Since you are willing to carry one, and cast your own bullets I'm thinking it has to do with "injection molded" rather than "steel and wood craftsmanship".
Which I will admit gives me some issues as well.
On the other hand, perspective matters.
A S&W revolver, or a 1911 are finely crafted shooting tools, a Glock is just a reliable blaster.

I have several hand guns that I often carry. My daily carry is a ruger lcr with critical defense +p (super comfy). Also carry an lcp at times as well. I feel undergunned with these two. My daily carry used to be a kimber ultra but since moving to az it is much more cumbersome since I dress different. I own a full size springfield operator 1911, but thats too hard to conceal. For home defense I have a Glock 22 by the bed. (Easy for the Mrs to use) I do have carry options, and every gun I have seems to fit into the puzzle somewhere. The 44 just doesn't fit anymore since grizzly bears are no longer an issue.

Glock 19 with the factory installed night sights...I would opt for an aftermarket steel sight like Heinies if you do not get the tritium lit ones... add a butt plug, stainless hardened guide rod, and non captured ISMI spring (I shoot a heavy 17# spring in my G34) and enjoy....
-
jj is right, Ichiban is right,....
So are others that found some platform that works. My S. Florida "Discovery Card" is a P3AT, or M85 snub, for day to day,....
Yes I rotate, between the M&P .40c and S&W 6906. But, to each his/her own.....
You must have it with you.
It Must Work.
Regardless.
Nothing wrong with the "G" guns....My G21 as big and blocky as it is, drops in my cargo pants pocket for walking the dog.
Carry it,
Train With it.
Enjoy it.

I working based off of the choice between just a G19 and a G23.
Since you already have a G22, I say get the 23. The magazine interchangeability is too much to pass up for me. There's also less chance for someone to grab a G22 mag and put it in the G19.
I love my 19, but it was my first, and I started building my 9mm and magazine stocks for it. I would do it again without hesistation. You have started with the G22; so, I would continue with the .40 cal theme.
Of course, pick which one is best for you.

The Glock's octagonal rifling doesn't deal well with lead bullets...

The G19 isn't any smaller, easier to carry, or ( loaded) much lighter than the guns you already have.
I'd keep the .44 you may never be able to replace it.

I think any hand gunners safe should include at least one model in 9 MM. They have plenty of power with the proper ammunition. And most importantly they are inexpensive to shoot, (with FMJ ammo). The cheaper a gun is to shoot, the more you will shoot and practice with it. In that regard it is far better to hit with a 9 MM, than it is to miss with a .44 Magnum. Compare the ammunition costs of the 2 and you can see why the 9 MM makes more sense in that regard.
Years back 9 MM performance was very anemic because they lacked bullets that would reliably expand. Today that is not an issue. Most all ammunition manufacturers produce an excellent self defense round that will reliably expand in most any situation you could possibly come across. As far as the Glock, you have many choices in 9 MM. All are good. You won't find a caliber offered in more shapes and styles of guns than the 9. You can't go wrong with one.

Ain't that the truth !
Anything from a Kel Tec P-11 up to an HK MP - 5 ;D

You can't beat a Glock 19 for ease of carry, reliability and parts availability. Besides a monkey can work on one, not that they ever really need to be worked on. In over 20 years of carrying Glocks for work and for play I can tell you the fewer aftermarket parts you mess with the better it will run. Put on good sights unless you get one of the newer models with factory steel sights. I run almost all XS big dots but that is another thread in itself. Any sights are better than factory plastic.
On the other hand if you really don't like Glocks and you love your 1911 but the full sized operator is too big then get a compact 1911 style pistol. If you want a 9mm get a Springfield EMP or a Kimber Ultra 9. I personally prefer a LW Commander style over the micro-sized 1911's since I have big hands. I'm currently carrying a Kimber Super Carry Ultra+ most of the time I'm off work. Easier to conceal than a G19 though I have no issues concealing a full sized duty pistol. Having the full length 1911 frame but bobtailed with the 3" slide is a tough size to beat for all around concealment with 8+1 of 45 on board.

Oh I love a challenge and any absolute statement is subject to challenge. ;)
I venture that .22lr tops 9mm in variety, shapes and styles of guns available.
Yeah, Yeah. We're talking SD guns in this thread.

Last time I checked, a .22 Magnum was a nasty leetle rd. for in your face SD. Even a carry option for bikini wear... ::)
But,...alas....many prefer the bigger calibers....
The PF-9 can be slicked up to run in anything, without breaking the bank. The other wonder compact 9's and some older versions, can be easily carried just without the bikini option.... ;)

PM me on turning that Taurus into a G-19. Its a sweet gen 1 pistol, only carried to church on Sundays (no BS there, it was owned by a judge who carried it in her purse. If its had 500 rounds through it I'll eat it. It just has some holster wear.). ;)
Seriously, I have a G26 I love for deep conceal, and I want a BFR woods gun. We can do business, and I will throw in several factory extended mags.
