I love to shoot and I reload as well, but costs are really going up so I traded a pistol off and had enough to get two cap and ball replicas and a BP in-line, .50 caliber modern muzzle loader. The revolvers a Pietta 1851 Navy in .44 and a Euroarms 1860 Army also in .44 are great fun to shoot and are accurate to boot, though the Army shoots high. Is anyone else on this forum doing any cap and ball or muzzle loader hunting?

No offense to you DGray, but this is something that irks me. I know you were using manufacturers "Model" names, but there was no such critter as a "Colt Navy .44" The whole purpose in designating one as the "Navy" model and the "Army" model was to differentiate between the .36 cal (Navy) and .44 cal (Army) models.This applied to 1851's and 1860's. Due to it's balance and fast handling the 1851Navy was the preffered pistol of Wild Bill Hickock before the advent of cartridges. The Navy was also the first to adopt a smallbore service rifle when it bought the 6mm Lee Navy.

On another note, I just shot my first black powder rifle 3 weeks ago. I love it!!! I hit about 1 inch high from about 40 yards out first shot. Dont know much about them but I was pretty proud of myself considering I didnt have my glasses. Hair trigger on the thing. One question, when pushing the cap down tight, if you press too hard will it go off?

Thanks , They don't have a blushing smiley, Have to ask Haz where he gets his ;D About the caps, I don't believe they will, but I might be wrong.

Dave, you have inspired me. About 30 years ago, my dad gave me a Navy Arms kit gun that I assembled, finished and hung on the wall. I'm gonna get a beginners shooting rig and try her out. Thanks for the motivation. My dad hated guns, but he loved me, so I should at least acknowledge his gift. Let you know how it goes.

I got into muzzleloading for deer about 12 years ago...and have never looked back. I live in a shotgun-only zone (Southern Lower Penninsula of Michigan) Your choice is a shotgun with a slug/buckshot, or you can use a muzzleloader during regular firearm deer season. Plus, there is a special late-season muzzleloading only season. Double bonus.
After I missed my third deer with a slug :'(, I decided that it was time to look at other options. Back then, there wasn't the selection of rifled slug barrels and ammo choices like there are today (not that was within my budget, anyway). So, I bought the CVA Firebolt .50 caliber in-line when they first came out and put a 3-9x32 scope on it. I can fling a 180 grain XTP at 1900 fps and keep them in a 1" hole at 100 yards (from the bench) :D.
Now, I'm not so sure I would consider shooting them cheaper. I think I figured out it costs me about $0.80 every time I pull the trigger.
