Title: XCR or SIG 556
Post by: Lucas on March 31, 2008, 11:52:52 PM
I like them both.  What I cant determine is which one.  I have read good/bad things about both.  Some of the things that concern me are durability, the ability to eat different ammo,  and future parts availability.  So I come to you!!!

I am also open to other like options in 5.56 that accept AR mags.

Bought my Sig 556 in Jan. Shot 300 rounds so far. Does not like Wolf ammo, (previous post), but will shoot everything else all day without a hitch. Seems to like full powered rounds better. Very shooter friendly; field stripping, features, etc.. Recoil is very minimal.

The factory flip up sights are lame, plan on some type of optics. Also ejected shells just "nick" the finish behind the opening. This is common and some don't care and some do.  Sig Forum has many ingenious ways to address this.

I put a NcStar P4 optic on it because I do not like the "dot" and I'm not rich. Plus I can buy more ammo, which is also going up. Santa may bring me a better scope this year, but it will turn cinder blocks to crumbs at 50-100yds all day. DRTV has a video review, which is a good thing to check out.

I think the XCR is more expensive but the prices for both I'm sure will go up regardless.

Went to attach a picture but its too big, I'll figure out how to downsize it shortly. This one is just a promo pic, looks awesome with an optic package.

Good luck and let us know

My Sig 556 ate Wolf flawlessly, but then I only shot six mags and was more concerned about the mags working since they were all different - surplus used metal, new metal, Sig plastic and Magpul plastic.

Here are some snaps.

I can't compare to the XCR, but I love my 556.  The poster above is right though, the factory BUIS are crap.  Plan on spending some money on optics.  I went with a Samson Mfg. front sight (drifts on) and an ARMS #40LP rear.  I put a Trijicon Tripower in on a Leupy quick-release ring between them.  It shoots anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 MOA with bulk ammo.  I haven't run any match or precision hand-loads through it.

The 556's forte is shot-to-shot speed.  The recoil consists of a tiny jitter, and you're right back on target.  Close quarters double-taps are super-fast.  You'll find that at 50yds, you can empty a mag as fast as  you can pull the trigger, and your sights will never leave the target.  It's just wonderfully manageable.    It's heavier than an AR, but this is offset by how controllable the rifle is.  Multiple rounds in the same target are faster than any combat rifle I've fired in semi.  The trigger on it really surprised me.  It's the best stock trigger I've fired on a combat style rifle.  (I do have some aftermarket match triggers on ARs that are better, as they should be).

As for reliability, this rifle has eaten anything I've run through it.  And I've fed it some crappy ammo.  The receiver does get marred by the ejected brass just behind the ejection port.  It doesn't bother me, but I have heard some folks complaining about it.

Another thing I've noted with the rifle is that it REALLY flings the brass.  I mean, if the round doesn't get your attacker, the brass might be just as likely to take him down.  I've had brass thrown 35 feet.  And yes, I reload, so it can be a pain to try and find brass that's been throw seven benches down the line.  Also, it dents the case-mouth of every round fired.  The dent is severe, but not so severe that it causes a crease, or isn't ironed out cleanly by the resizing die.   But I use that dent to determine if it's indeed *my* brass that I'm picking up at the range.

I have the 556 and love it. Both are very similar in operation. I like the fact that the XCR comes in different cals, and all are interchangeable. The XCR is also south paw friendly with the charging handle on the left side. Both use AR mags which is very practical these days. I do not care for the folding stock on the XCR and I do not know if it will accommodate AR stocks. From experience and what I have heard, you really can`t go wrong with either one. If you get the XCR, please post on results.

Hey Lucas did you get the Sig or the XCR?

Show pics if you can.  I would love to know about the XCR, I love my Sig and shoot it frequently, just curious.
