Amazing.....A sitcom,...actually got it right.... Speaking On Behalf Of Guns For Everybody..
After all he ain't got no superiority, so he ain't gonna be pullin' no rod.....(spoken like a once former New Yorker)...
Posted before, but worth a holiday tribute to Meathead....
;)

Archie was right more often than not.

You should pay more attention to what Archie said instead of following the Meathead's lead.
-
For FQ's benefit, as well as others here, you do realize that the fact that Archie was right is completely irrelevant, right? This clip is right out of Alinsky's playbook.
Carrol O'Connor and Norman Lear were 2 huge libtards from the get go. They portrayed Bunker as an ignorant buffoon such that his opinion would be that of an ignorant buffoon. Note the mis-pronunciation and mis-use of words (given his typing skills, points perhaps overlooked by FQ ;) ), the goofy looks on O'Connor's face as he struggled to get the dim thoughts out to the camera. This is classic, a complete disparagement of the man, Archie Bunker, and therefore his ideas.
We can enjoy it now, especially as we agree with the basic ideas espoused by Bunker, but let's never forget how Lear and O'Connor used that show to attack American values.
-
True, but Path you are making a fundamental mistake. You are confusing intent with effect. First, I'm not sure that Arch was meant tobe a cartoon. More often than not he was shown as a man who deeply loved his family and worked hard to support them. Politically though, he was smeared. Still, while that might have been Lear's intent, Archie was treated as a hero by a lot of folks even back in the day. He may have mispronunciated words and was misunderestimated ;D, but a lot of folks from the first runs till today think Archie was right more often than not. What Lear intended to do, and what actually happened were two different things. Archie gave a sort of voice to the folks who became the Reagan Democrats. Hard hats who'd had it with interest group liberalism and voted GOP for the first time in their lives in 1980.

I think they screwed up my Heart meds, I have to agree with FQ on the point he made.
Archie was intended as a lampoon of the "unenlightened", but he was the only voice of Nixon's "silent majority".

It wasn't much of a silent majority. Nixon won re-election in a monstrous landslide over McGovern! The largest margin of victory in modern politics, even makes Reagans win look normal.

That may be, but did you see a Patriotic reaction to the anti war movement ?
Did you see a "TEA Party" type reaction to the theft of Social Security, or the increased taxes to pay for the welfare programs ?
Did you see any one up in arms over the GCA - 68 ?
Did you see any one question the deposing of Nixon ?
How about a counter to the 20 years of leftist propaganda that followed in the media ?
They may have given Tricky Dick an overwhelming majority at the polls but otherwise they kept their mouths shut.

I was fifteen....and thinking 'bout boobies Tom!
:D
I have little doubt my Dad voted for McGovern though! Mom most certainly voted for Nixon! They always cancelled each other out on elections.
-
I was 12 and had an autographed picture of Nixon on my bedroom wall.
It bugged hell out of my Aunt, she was head of the local Dem Party ;D

That's just sad Tom....my mom bought me a five foot poster of a semi neked Marilyn Monroe for my bedroom wall.
Priorities!

I was 24, thinking of boobies, and had no poster on the bedroom wall.
I like the show because it was the first I remember to take on hard social issues and on prime time yet.
Both Archie and Meathead where emphasized stereotypical examples of those who held those views.
Edith was the same....housewife not much aware of anything other thant he cost of produce at the local market....
My bias showed because I saw felt they made Archie a caricature of those who held his values, but felt Meathead was right on the money for those with his take on things.
Gloria, Sally Struthers, had a previous roll...as Happy Hollywood, in ads for something. She wore the same tight blond curls she had when she first appeared as Gloria. I hated happy Hollywood.
-
Rob Reiner (Meathead) was not acting, those are actually the views he held then and that he holds today.

I also had Miss October on the back of the door. No one ever knew she was there. ;D

BHO has been compared to Carter v2.0.... This 2:28 tirade, filmed during the Carter admin, reminds us,..again,,,, of three things:
Lear was very smart to portray Archie as a Blue Collar, War Vet, Conservative, homophobe.
He did "represent" a silent majority...Listen to the applause at the end....
BHO is Carter v2.0

What I don't understand is how they could write a script that was so damned accurate and still be socialists themselves. ???

A. they were playing it for laughs and ratings, and
B. they honestly thought they were making a buffoon out of Archie.

Of course you to, Tom.
Same as today....facts have very little to do with their beliefs.
They felt that showing that Archie went against the Proscribed Belief Structure was enough to heap ridicule upon him.
-
Edith reminds me of my Grandmother .
You could have robbed that lady by mail.
-
Archie Bunker was ahead of its time. Due to the Political Correct Brigade it would be hard to have a show like this on television. The only person I have seen come close recently is Carlos Mencia.

If he wasn't a self proclaimed "Beaner" he couldn't get away with it either.
