.......not to affix to a rifle, but this seemed the best place to post my question:
I need to be able to put a fairly bright dot, through glass, in early morning/early evening daylight, on deer at about 50-60yds, without disturbing them ..........what do I need that won't break the bank?

Not sure how LASER light holds up through glass, but if the light outside is much brighter than normal in house lighting, you might need to consider a green LASER. Never worked with one, but they are said to have better range/brightness than red ones...and 50yds is a good distance
If all you need is a LASER, you might get by with some type of pointer or other non firearms product. Might be cheaper due to no mounting system needed and won't have to stand up to recoil and rough usage.
Also, they won't need to be as compact so you will get more power available in the larger package.
Here is a 30mv green laser pointer. You can start your search here.

Found this place....and got a chat window with a customer service rep when I entered. Told him what you wanted....50yds through glass early morning or evening...he said the E2 or E3 series would be what I would want to check out. They might be bank breakers depending upon how tough of a bank you have....

Dare I ask WHY you want to point lasers at deer 50 yards away through a window? Just trying to freak them out? ;)

If deer see a laser pointed at there side, do they think thay will be shot? ;D
-
Excellent Solus - Thanks. I should be able to spare $90 for that E3 from Wicked Lasers, looks like it might work just fine :)
FQ: I have either very inexperienced shooters, or very old shooters whose eyes are not as good as they once were in the blind and I'd like to be able to point out a specific animal (from the windowed side of the blind) in the crowd under the feeder. This came to a head this morning with a very old friend of mine (by which I mean he's very old....not that I've known him a long time!) who couldn't see that one deer had antlers!!!!!!.................anyway he made a good shot on a big doe :(

LASER designated target.....I think it's called 'Painting" by the guys with the big guns :D :D

Now that you explain the problem , I remember a writer describing a hunt at your place.
This sounds like an ideal solution .
-
Ahh, Texas style hunting. That explains it. I was wondering if it was just for pshyops on Bambi. ;)

I ain't so pshy ;), and you'll notice that I never called it 'hunting'..........'shopping' maybe?

Bic, Just make sure to check your state game laws, in some states using any light emitting device is considered spotlighting and is illegal.
-
Going thru the window is going to be your issue, more so if you have some type of tint on it, or its a multi pane.

Hey, Bambi doesn't care. He's just as dead and at least had a last meal. Whatever works. Its not my preferred way to do things, but ask me in ten years and you might get a different answer. Its about having a good time. Besides, I did some special draw hunts in state parks. It was basically like a U-pic-em fruit stand. I might as well have left the .270 at home and brought a bag of doritos and a 2x4. ;)
Do watch the spotlighting thing though. I hadn't thought of that it and it will cost you if you get popped for it, but as you're on private land I don't see how that would happen.

all it takes is one tree hugger or one dummy posting it on youtube.
<<<< very thankful cameras were not around much as a kid.

Great way for an aging hunter to still have something after they can't manage the hunt any more.
Keeps it in their life, refreshes old memories, provides vital ingredients for favorite recipes and a chance to chat with like minded folks....not bad at all.
If the glass turns out to be a problem, some type of small chest level "door" can be put into the glass or the wall next to it to allow the use of the LASER.

Good point Majer, I'll look into it before I do anything. Gotta keep on the right side of Johnny Law.

§ 62.005. HUNTING WITH LIGHT. No person may hunt a game
animal or bird protected by this code with the aid of an artificial
light that casts or reflects a beam of light onto or otherwise
illuminates the game animal or bird, including the headlights of a
motor vehicle.
Oh Well...........never mind.

Easy solution. Take out the window. Then get the old guy ready to fire. You shoot the designated deer with a paintball and have him aim for the pink splat mark. ;D

does that include laser sites? I know of 1 state that makes a exception for that.
a strick litteral reading would make the use of laser or infired range finders illegal. Since I'm sure those are not covered under this, it does not hurt to ask, and get it in writing.
-
TAB is , in this case, raising a good point, you are not "illuminating
the deer, since it is daytime. you are "designating".
You really should get a written legal clarification on the matter.

Wow, talk about the Spirit of Christmas, Good Will to All Men stuff, I'm feeling a little verklempt! :'(

Don't let it upset you, I put in the disclaimer so he wouldn't add it to his signature line. ;D
