Title: Air Jordans.. How far we've come..
Post by: santahog on December 23, 2011, 01:09:04 PM
I remember 25 years ago when kids were killing each other over shoes, typically endorsed by Michael Jordan.
My, but how far we've come...

For all I know, it's the ones that survived the last "trend"..
Talk about a "Sweet Science".. Advertising is a remarkable field.. (I admire it as an art/craft)..

You know, I've never seen this when the new model of Sperry Topsiders or Tony Llama boots comes out. Odd, that. Just sayin'.  ::)

Well, first they make many models of Topsiders but only the Authentic Original's are worth fighting for.   Several years ago, Kohl's had a sale on AO's and I was there with an entourage of body guards several hours before opening.   I bought every pair they had in my size.  (all 4)  Fortunately, it appeared the rest of the world had elected to sleep in that morning or it could have gotten ugly.

There is a word that starts with N that comes to mind.

I mean really, its just a pair of shoes.

And in fairness, its whitefolks that fight over X boxes and the like. Still and all, you'd think folks wouldn't want to go out of their way to feed a stereotype.

The crazy part of this is that, as a shoe maker, I find Nike quality to be poor to average.  I won't buy them anymore because of their quality issues.

Those 12-year old Chinese kids just don't have what it takes anymore.

Sadly, only New Balance makes sneakers here anymore and they're way over 100 bucks a pair.  I still prefer them to any other though!

Yep. I bought them, at a premium when they were new and the "waffle tread" was the cool new thing for cross country back in the early '80s . In the intervening decades they just seem like crap. My dad bought a pair of their "trail' shoes and had them blow out about three days into a fourteen day raft trip, and I thought they sucked before that. But he had faith in the brand, and assured me they'd be fine.  Well, $150, faith in the Nike brand, and a roll of duct tape will hold them together. ;D As it is, I'd much prefer New Balance, and they're a lot cheaper as well.

PS for fellow New Balance fans (or everbody in general) try Sierra Trading Post .com. They are a great company that deals in seconds on outdoor gear, mil surp and even dress clothes. Their prices are great and they are great at returns. I've dealt with them a lot over the years. Its anybody's guess what's going to be in any given catalog, but the quality and prices can't be beat. They almost always have some NB shoes in the $60 range.

My newest car is a 84.    The newest I've ever owned was 96 and it was 8 years old when I got it.

I've never been accused of not being a worker.

My company did buy a bunch of new trucks, and I did buy my wife a new car, but I've nevered owned one.  I don't bring my work trucks home unless I have a need of them( moving and the box truck as a example)  I drive back and forth to work in my 84 ford.

FQ the white familys that fought over xboxs are also that n word.  its not a racist term, its a mind set.

This is just very sad and pathetic. Creed and culture aside these people should be ashamed.

P.S. For anyone that cares I have been a huge fan of New Balance and you should be too...

And we're proud to say that 25% of our shoes sold in The United States are made or assembled right here.

Well I guess that is better than 0%.

It's mostly their high dollar models and you need to check the label for country of origin.

Copied from my FB page:

Perhaps we need to amend the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, Explosives and Shoes (BATFES). It is evident that shoes, specifically Air Jordans, are a source of violence, crime and murder in our inner cities, and that government should step in and bring about peace and Utopia while protecting us from ourselves. If only we could have more laws and more thugs (police) on the streets to enforce them, then surely Nirvana would be achieved.

If people will do this for shoes, what would they do for the last bottle of water or loaf of bread?  This is just more proof that the veneer of civility in our society is getting thinner by the day.

A sobering thought, indeed.

These people will kill each other over shoes, jackets, sports jerseys, dope, guns, and just about everything else, except a place in the employment line. We've seen this over and over. It just keeps getting worse. The other day there was a huge fight at the Mall Of America in Minneapolis over some stupid idiots rapping. These morons are ready, willing, and able to go to war over the most foolish things imaginable.

They need to find a unpopulated place where they can all gather, and air drop a load of guns and ammunition for them. Then 20 minutes later have the C-130 circle around and drop 20 tons of free "Air Jordan's", and let them all kill each other over them. The cast of of "Jersey Shore" could referee the whole melee. The world will be a better place.

Fixed that for ya.
