Title: I hate how Davidson's Gallery of Guns show is scripted!
Post by: AE3007H1 on December 27, 2011, 03:37:13 PM
I really like the shows that are not scripted such as The Best Defense.  I know that they have a general narrative but they are not reading from a prompter.  The Davidson's Gallery Of Guns show would be a good show if they didn't read from a prompter or talk like a robot because they have memorized a script!  It makes me think that they don't really know their stuff.  I want to hear the knowledge roll off the host's and guest's tongues like they really know the material.  The only good thing about the show is the guns and Anne Marie.  What do you all think?

That show is a joke.  My least favorite gun show I ever watched.  And if my name was Bo Keister, I would have it changed!  I always liked Frank James, but he acts like a robot on that show.

Yea, I have seen Frank on Gun Stories and he seems cool but not on DGG.  You would think that they would realize that they look like fools producing a show in that format.

Look on the bright side. It is off the for at least 13 weeks. The new season started on sportsmans channel on monday. Some older shows with new stuff. All of have a formula they follow and it gets boring after a while.

Teleprompters are a disease...you would be amazed at the number of executives I talk to who see them as "the answer" for life, the universe and everything. 'Prompters are darned hard to read from — it's a skill like any other acting skill...definitely not a short-cut! — especially if the copy isn't dead-on spoken word. I've typed directly into the 'prompter for Joe Mantegna to read, and it's hard hard writing.

Frank James is a genuine stone-cold expert on this stuff, one of the best in the world. That's why we use him on GUN STORIES...

The talk of TelePrompters reminds me of the "Go F*** Yourself, San Diego" scene from "Anchorman".   ;D

Definitely a bad show but a great place to by GUNS. Around here the pickings are slim and pricey. I order from them and in two or three days I pick it up at a local FFL holder.

Teleprompters are just like PowerPoint without the pictures, and just as useless.  It truly discusts me the number of briefers that use Power Point as their promter and rad directly from it.  Dear God INSTRUCT not read.  There are more than a few senior leaders (military and corporate) that have banned it.  I use it but only to reinforce the point (to give the students hints on what to take notes on).

I too have always liked Frank James but agree this a terrible show. The only thing is I'd rather see a terrible gun program than none at all. It seems like we have more gun programming on tv now than we've ever had. I hope that trend continues. Gallery of Guns, when you get right to it, is just a big commercial for whatever Davidson's is wanting to pimp that week.

Michael,  yes I can imagine that it is a hard thing to write such things so they seem fluid and organic.  This is the ONLY time that you will ever hear me sing Obama's praise but you have to admit, the man can flat out smoke a teleprompter down!! haha  take Bush for example to contrast.  He repeatedly made mistakes and gave SNL writers lots of material for jokes but at least you know what he did say came from the heart and him.  That is why I like the dynamic produced when someone is using their own words and knowledge to convey a point.  Take Frank for example.  I don't doubt his knowledge for one second but when he reads someone else's script it is not natural to him.  When someone has the freedom to speak with their own words and convey something in their own way it allows their natural mannerism to come forth and the whole experience allows you as the viewer to feel closer to the "human being" that is on the other side of the TV.  You Michael are good at this.  As for Joe Mantegna, well the man is a pro. haha  He does a phenomenal job and it seems that he uses the teleprompter but has the ability to mix this information with this own natural mannerism to pull us all in and make us love the show.  This leads me to my conclusion,  If the writers were to use the teleprompter to post data points and key bits of information etc... this will allow a competent person to use the teleprompter as a form of "notes".  Ideally this will help the person/host keep the show on track and not skip around and will serve as a knowledge backup to said person/host all while allowing that person's natural self to show through.

DGG is dry as dirt..
At the risk of offense, Joe Montegna is almost as bad on Gun Stories. Joe comes across as not believing a word he says. (Sorry)..

I understand how one could get that from Joe.  I do not.  I think he is a good fit for the more serious tone that Gun Stories takes on. But, it just goes to show that many people will pick up many different things from the same given item.  But we all have in common the fact that DGG is bad.

I tend to like the show that I feel as if I have alittle more knowledge to go to train with such as Personal Defense, etc....  If I am learning, I will watch.
