Title: Thank You Australia! - wine related kudos
Post by: Bic on December 29, 2011, 09:40:25 PM
"Chateau Chateau" Triumphal Arch, 2007 Grenache, Light Pass, Barossa Valley. maybe the best non-French wine I've ever tasted.
Produced & bottled by R Wines, Eastwood SA Australia. Cetrainly pricey and 16% abv, which is usually too much for wine in my book but in this case simply delicious.
We had it today with Cornish Game Hens, a blend of wild rices and assorted veggies...........Oh Momma!

Please do not mention French Wine....  ;)

+1 on Aussie Wines....The Kaesler Stonehorse Grenache, as well as the Molly Dooker, Peter Lehman lines of Shiraz, and Cab's are fantastic.

My "stint" meter minimum is 13.5% alcohol,...as the sugars get happy from that point. 16% Rivals Zinfindels,....but with a good meal, like Cornish Hens, and all the trimmings,,,,,makes for a very happy smile..

Thanks for the heads up on the vino,....I am the closet expensive wino, along with Timothy, who enjoy wine very much.

(Except French, and German),....  ;D

I have grown to enjoy a good grape beverage over the last year or so with some tutelage from a few here at DRTV like TW!  I will jot this Aussie wine down in my little memory bank for future procurement!  The town I'm living in currently has nearly 10K sq ft of wines and even 1K sq/ft of wine I cannot afford in a separate climate controlled cellar.

No doubt they're going to have this one too...

Thanks and I agree about the French....though I sleep with one, I don't trust her!

Probably even less and with greater cause after she reads your comment...

The French can produce a good sauce and little else, IMHO.

Personal preference is generally for California wines with the Australian varietals coming a close second.  Also worth a few dollars are the Chilean wines, especially the bolder reds.  For whites of various varietals I enjoy some of the Washing State produce with South Africa also on the list.  For ports and sherries, the Spanish give the Portuguese a good run for their money, but once again, the Northern California wineries are right up there.

Finally, as to spirits, the Quaker's Dad and I share an appreciation for Evan Williams--cheap and deep, aged at least a week or two, with solid performance on the rocks.  That will be my turn-to for the coming New Year's Eve.

After 29 years, how much can you trust anyone!  Besides, she's really an American of French-Canadian decent!

I'll keep her!  She makes beautiful children.....and puts up with me!

 ;)

CR, which one of Evan Williams are you speaking of?  I'm a scotch guy but bourbon has character as well!

No wine home brewers here?

Isn't it just like brewing beer except you pay more attention to specific gravity???   ;D ;D

I'm hesitant about Australian wines, because I believe at least one vineyard/producer is very active in the politics of gun control.

Maybe someone from down under could fill us in (set me straight).

Dude, are you going to drink it or vote for it? I too like the Aussies and Chileans. I'll also give a shout out to the French, particularly a Crozes Hermitage. They are a lighter red that has this minerally taste from the soil. You can't find it anywhere else. Its not my favorite wine, but if you haven't tried one, give it a go. Its a very unique taste, and with the right meal, like a grilled game hen, its perfect.

I have enjoyed both the black label AND the green label, but prefer the black.  They also produce a high-end along the lines of Gentleman Jack.  Haven't tried it, but I find Evan superior to anything by the Daniels distillery.  I also enjoy Maker's Mark, but for the money, Evan is my choice.

I do enjoy a good Scotch, both single malts and blends.  If you're into Scotch, try any of the Japanese whiskeys--Suntory comes to mind.  A couple hundred years ago, a Scot showed up in Japan with a developing thirst.  He set up the distillery to resemble what he knew from home.  The result has been very acceptable, smokey, complex whiskey.  If you try it,let me know your thoughts.

Is that comment based on something more than the fact it does not come from Bourbon County Kentucky ?

Bourbon doesn't need to be distilled in Kentucky anymore but there are certain things that are required...

Jack Daniels is Proudly named Tennessee Whiskey by it's producers.  It's filtering through charcoal makes it unique to other corn mash whiskeys.

Jack Daniels is bourbon up until they charcoal filter it. They use the required amount of corn, etc.

I've drunk my share, but if I have to drink Bourbon I really prefer Evan Williams or George Dickel. Maker's Mark is a bit smoother, but if I'm spending that much I'd rather buy a good rum or tequila.

That is correct fine sir!  But don't call it bourbon in Lynchburg, TN, they'll run your yankee ass out of town!

Here's more worthless drivel on bourbon..

"Bourbon Whisky must contain a minimum of 51% corn, be produced in the United States, be distilled at less than 80% ABV (160 proof) and be aged for a minimum of two years in new charred barrels, although in practice virtually all straight whiskies are aged at least four years. Any Bourbon, or any other domestic or imported whiskey, for that matter, that has been aged less than four years must contain an age statement on the label. Small Batch Bourbons are bourbons that bottled from a small group of specially selected barrels that are blended together. It should be noted though that each distiller has their own interpretation of what constitutes a "small batch." Single Barrel Bourbon is Bourbon from one specifically chosen cask.

The Taste: Flavor descriptors such as toffee, pralines, vanilla, and dried fruit to describe the initial rush of flavors in a good, well-aged Bourbon. The charred oak barrels give Bourbon a distinctive spicy oak firmness that is unique to American whiskeys.

Tennessee Whisky must contain a minimum of 51% corn, be produced in Tennessee, be distilled at less than 80% ABV (160 proof), filtered through a bed of sugar maple charcoal, and be aged for a minimum of two years in new charred barrels.

The Taste: The taste descriptors for Tennessee whisky tend to parallel those of its Kentucky cousin. The distinction and the difference comes on the finish which is long, clean, and very, very smooth—a result of the final sugar maple charcoal filtration. Legally, Tennessee whiskeys could be sold as Bourbon; but the two Volunteer State distillers are proud enough of their “sipping whisky” to insist that the difference be known to all."

I just picked up a bottle of Woodford Reserve for my evening!  We'll see if it stands up to it's history...

They had Evan Williams but only in the 1/2 gallon variety of bottling.  I need to try a few drams before I drop 15 bucks on a quart of the stuff... ;)

Made in America!

It does!

Pretty tasty stuff and not near the price of a decent single malt...
