Have you seen the commercials for Progressive's snapshot discount program? It's a device you plug into the diagnostic port in your car. It tracks your driving habits and reports back to Progressive. Here are a couple FAQs from their website:
What driving habits are included in my snapshot?
Your driving snapshot includes the number of miles you drive, time of day you drive and how often you make sudden stops. People who drive less, in safer ways and during safer times of day could get a discount.
Will Progressive share Snapshot data with anyone else?
We won’t share Snapshot data with a third party unless it’s required to service your insurance policy, prevent fraud, perform research or comply with the law. We also won’t use Snapshot data to resolve a claim unless you or the registered vehicle owner gives us permission.
I'm just wondering what other information it tracks. A little too Big Brother for me. Pass.
-
same here. too much like big brother. I will never own a current GM vehicle because of that OnStar system.
who is to say that if you were involved in an accident that Progressive wouldn't use the information contained within their gadget against you and say reject your claim or drop you from their insurance entirely?
-
To big brother ?
It's the "Progressive" way, WTF do you expect ?
-
I use USAA for active duty, retired and Honorably discharged veterans!
I'll never change again!
-
Your vehicle's computer is a black box that records everything you do with your vehicle. If you have a system like OnStar it can be tied into where you do it. Manufacturers use the information to catch people that abuse their vehicles and then try to get warranty fixes.
When you sign up for the insurance you are in fact giving them permission to look at your driving habits. I would like to talk to someone that has had an accident while driving recklessly. I bet those aren't easy claims to collect on.
-
I like this part too:
We also won’t use Snapshot data to resolve a claim unless you or the registered vehicle owner gives us permission.
Isn't signing up for the program giving them permission to use this data?

I have 2009 IMPALA. There was a video on "SAY UNCLE" a few months back on how to disconnect them. The demo vehicle was a Impala also. The box is in the trunk on the left side wall covered by the trunk liner. There are 3 cables to disconnect and that takes care of the tracking thru Onstar.

Our Lt. Governor, whatever his name is, was supposedly exploring the October storm damage back in early November. While he was driving back to work, nearly 50 miles from Boston, he went off the road in his official state vehicle, rolled several times and smacked into a piece of our local flora which is a granite cliff wall.
His initial story was a bit sketchy at best as it was 5:00 am and he was quite a ways from where he lives as it relates to his drive to work. He walked away from the accident and while at the scene, asked the SP trooper to give him a breath test for alcohol! He was sober....and said he's slid on black ice!
Several months go by and last week it was determined by his black box that he went off the road at nearly 108 MPH before he rolled and smacked the wall. His story changed pretty quickly and now he believes he may have fallen asleep!
Black boxes will not lie but our Lt. Governor had no problem trying! BTW, he's was NOT wearing a seat belt even though it's been state law for the last 15 years at least! They sited him a ticket of nearly 600 bucks for speeding, not wearing a seat belt and are forcing him to pay for his 2007 Crown Victoria!

I was with Progressive, for a long time,....they ignored me when I moved to FL from NC, and "quibbled" with me over premiums.
Ended up dumping them for the Lizard...
Also the CEO of Progressive, is on record as a huge BHO supporter.....
Sorry, starting to think of a pre-78 Jeep, pre K5 Blazer....after the EMP, they will still work... ;)
Points, plugs, and condensers,....not EFI, multi-valve, ECM, controlled "monitored" modern stuff....

That may remove you from OnStar tracking capability, but it will not eliminate the driving habits. Those are tracked in the electronics that control everything in the car from ignition, to fuel, to climate control, to seatbelts, etc., etc., etc. It knows speeds, braking, cruise control, etc. If you have a computer on board, they know what you are doing. Sorry dude!

Sigh... granted. But as much as I like Flo, no way in hell am I voluntarily sticking a blackbox in my truck to prove I'm a good boy, even though I rarely break 75. I'll stick with USAA. And, if you're eligible, I'd do the same. A great company, and you actually get money back at year's end if the company made a profit as its a co-op.

I saw that as well. It is not over yet either, since investigators are saying that based on speed and braking info FROM THE BLACK BOX, he could not possibly have been asleep.

Is any one surprised that our resident liberal likes the fake nurse with the crazy eyes ? ::)

Hey, she's cute, leave my fantasy life alone ;)! In real life, it would never cross my mind to buy from proggressive. I've had USSA for years for everything. They've always paid promptly for everything from a stolen bike, to a car fire, to a wrecked canoe and the rates are reasonable. As for my truck, it's a '98.

The head of Progressive was a bigtime donor to John Fing Kerry back in 04.. I think his name was Peter Lewis, but it's been a while.. I don't buy Heinz products anymore either..
I loved USAA for auto but homeowners for my place was 4x what Allstate charges. No choice.. I didn't realize that a Homeowners policy underwriter could "REQUIRE" that you carry Auto to get the policy!!! Seems to be the case though..
When did that happen?
-
Sounds like he may be scamming you if he won't write you a home owners policy with out you switching Auto coverage.

Depending on where you live, they are bitchy about homeowners. Renter's they'll write where ever, buth omeowners is an issue. Its the downside of being a co-op, the oversight is stricter. The upside is that there will always be enough money in the kitty to pay a claim, unlike say, AIG.

They can pull the info.

FQ, How are you eligible for USAA if I may ask?

My dad had it. Its transferable to dependents. If you get it your daughter might be eligible as they translate "dependents" loosely to get more clients.

I tried but by the time I was a member, she was already an adult and she's had her own policy since she turned 18 anyway.

Too bad. I've been with them since I was 16 and got my first truck, and I have no intention of ever switching.

I wasn't aware until last year that they'd opened it to all Vets with an Honorable Discharge. I now use them for Auto, Home, banking, investments, credit cards, etc...

I think you're wrong Timothy. All that would have to happen is for his son to have him declared mentally incompetent and list him as a dependent. I'll testify at the hearing. ;D

I have Progressive ATV insurance. In about a 2 year period they paid for 4 stolen vehicles and still didn't drop me when one was stolen again. I'm only paying about $120 a year for full coverage and I don't even know where else to get ATV insurance. As to the OP I don't think I would use that snapshot thing if I had Progressive car insurance.

I HAD Progressive a while back. I got rid of them because like so many other companies, the first thing they do is start in with the whole deal of, "If we had your house as well as all of your cars we could save you even more!". I'm tired of playing that game. I did that and within a couple of years my rates had crept up beyond any initial savings I might have experienced.
I dropped them after they refused to budge on lowering my rates. I drive very little and never had a claim with them. I now have Hartford through AARP and the savings are substantial. As far as the AARP being anti gun and all of that, I really don't think they are anymore than hundreds of other companies who are accused of much the same thing. It almost becomes an impossibility to keep track of these type of accusations with any reality or certainty.
If you examine these lists put out by the NRA and similar pro gun organizations, it changes almost on a monthly basis as companies go on, and drop off such "lists". For example, there are several companies who are put on these lists by comments made by management personnel who no longer work there. So you have to be somewhat realistic about it when you make decisions on who to deal with. If I'm not mistaken, Progressive's President is supposedly a big anti gun guy.
-
I've stopped worrying about that stuff. If I only did business with people I'd vote for, I'd be drilling for oil in my back yard, refining it in the kitchen and spinning wool from the sheep I'd raised to sew my own clothes. I think that you only let it steer your business if its a company policy and there is a reasonable alternative. Otherwise, just give a bit to the NRA.

I fired AARP after the first year. Not for their gun stance but because they were the most prolific mail order marketer I've ever experienced. They just flood your mailbox with crap! The NRA is close as well but I don't mind reading some of their stuff!
Besides, I'm pushing 55 with the mind of a 14 year old! I'm not old yet....I'll never move to Florida, I still have all of my hair and for the most part, it's still brownish...I'm convinced they dropped the age to 50 to make more money!
;)

You can eliminate that with both organizations by getting on their "Do Not Promote" lists. They will stop bombarding your mail box with crap.

I get nothing from AARP anymore. I don't think they can find me!
