With all the infighting going on in the debates and behind the scenes we need to look at the corner Pres. BHO has painted himself into:

The pipeline has placed the Obama administration in the middle of a dispute between two key parts of its voting block: green groups who oppose the pipeline over concerns about climate change and some unions who back the project because of the jobs they believe it would create.
The two largest groups he is counting on to reelect him are at odds over this one, and he has made is choice. Now we will see if the "green groups" can garner enough votes to make up for the unions he will lose and those for all other groups that trusted him to improve the domestic job sector.

Idiot indeed. Environmental concerns are luxury good. In tough times, no one gives a damn about the spotted owl or whatever. Thats just politics 101. I'm sure Carville is beating his head against the wall.

Whereas Axerlrod is grinning like a fool. He doesn't give a rat's ass for the environment, and he knows full well that the unions will not abandon bho - bho has and will continue to reward them for nothing, just like unions love - and the greenies now adore him even further, assuming that was even possible.
