Title: Rock Island Auction - 2/18-19
Post by: alfsauve on January 23, 2012, 06:47:40 AM
Yep, it's coming up time for the RIA regional auction.    For those unfamiliar this is a large auction (>5,000 guns)  aimed at dealers and collectors.  On the average all "lots" are valued at a minimum of ~$1,000.   Many lots include multiple firearms.  Don't let that scare you away, though.  If you're looking for an 1873 Winchester you're going to be in the $1,000 range anyway.   And so if you have to buy 4 S&Ws just to get the one you want.  Gunbroker is your friend.  You might even make money, by selling the guns you didn't want individually.

I got the hard copy catalog last week and spent several nights going over it.   Better than any gun magazine.    While I had already searched the on-line catalog for specific items,  the depth and breath of the offerings really can't be appreciated without the hard copy.

What's neat about this one?

For starters there are 11 rifles from Col Charles Askins.  (Lots 488-498)   Don't forget he was left handed and all of these bolt actions are as well.

Then there are bunches of lever actions from the 1800s.   Winchesters, Henrys,& Marlins.   There's a Remington XP100.  Several Dan Wesson, interchangeable barrel revolvers, and lots of C&R stuff.

I also found it unique that there are a number of lots of ammo, reloading components, swords, bayonnets, military paraphenalia and other stuff.  Also some Remington statues and other art work.

There's always a chance, with so many items, that the bidders will get fatigued and there may be some real bargains out there.  Nothing that I really need, though I may put in a the XP-100 and the next lot of Ruger MK-1's.  Maybe bid on a couple of the SW M66 lots.

You can pre-bid, bid on-line, or go to Rock Island, IL yourself.   Just remember Caveat Emptor.   18% buyer fee (15% if you pay by cash or MO).

So I couldn't wait for next weekend, having the auction bug and all.

I was just minding my own business (and of course having GB, AA, GA all send me daily listing doesn't help) when all of a sudden.
Pow.  "YOU'RE THE WINNER".     Okay, this was languishing at a pitifuyl low price, so I bid $435, tops, when it was still below $400.  Next thing I know, the auction closed and I got it for $416.   Heck most of them having a starting bid of $600.

Nothing fancy, but I've had a hankering to try IDPA SSR and now all I need is a holster and a speed loader holder.

Glad there's nothing in particular I want from the 2/18 auction.

Gotta go....."OH, SWEETIE.   CAN I BORROW THE CHECK BOOK TOMORROW.................PLEASE?"

Is that the Model 66 you mentioned in .357?

I believe that is an L frame 686.  66 doesn't have the full underlig and is K frame.  Both take the same grip but the L is a bit beefier.

Sorry.  Yes it's a 686 - 1.  Mid '80s.  L frame - a little beefier than the M66.  Slightly larger cylinder so it takes a different speed loader.  It's been use probably carried and that's okay, I intend to wear it out anyway.  Probably 500 rounds a month easy.

I have a 66 (no dash), but I feel bad about using (abusing)  it for competition since it is somewhat historic/collectible.  (Pinned barrel, recessed chambers, stainless front and rear sight).

Here's the real bottom line.   You can get some great buys at these auctions.  The true live auctions like RIA as well as GA, GB and AA, if you know your prices and are willing to wait.

So there wasn't really anything I couldn't live without in today's auction.   I thought I'd check in on it to see how things were going.  Lot #1  An original Henry repeater.   $17,000.    There were a few bargains, but most things went rather high.   Especially for on-line buyer who could pay up to 19.5% fee.

Disappointing was Col Askin's personal rifles.  With one exception they all did pretty poorly.   Here's what his rifles went for:

Remington Model 700 Left Handed Bolt Action Rifle with Scope, from the Charles Askins Collection
Lot # 488   Estimate: $900 - $1500  Sold for: $750.00
