Title: New Kalashnikov
Post by: CJS3 on January 25, 2012, 07:36:28 PM
Looks like the Russians are trying to update the venerable AK design.

Since the Russian army anounced it wouldn't be buying anymore rifles soon, I think this is an attempt to compete on the foriegn markets with western styled rifles.

The part I liked best was that there will be 2 versions - a light (with 3 different calibers) and a heavy that shoots - wait for it - the NATO 7.62x51!!!!!

Well, it was not so much the Russian rifle shooting the .308, it was that the illustrious AK-47's descendent was now configured to shoot the previous NATO standard round. It's called irony.  ;)

And it's called we won. Sort of.

There's millions of rounds or .308/7.62x51 cartridges laying all over the planet!  It's only sound reasoning....

I prefer the .308/7.62x51 over the poodle puncher (.223/5.56) but I have my dad's HK 91 Frankengun and would have a hard time replacing it with an AK.  Now an M1/M14 or an AR-10 or even better a SCAR I wouldn't even hesitate but the AK will always be the 7.62x39 rifle-and it is an awesome gun in its own right.

I guess this is just a military version of the Saiga rifle.

My 308 after mods;
