Title: Gun(s) you want that you ACTUALLY might buy...
Post by: Hazcat on April 05, 2008, 03:26:06 PM
As with all of us I have a budget (some are bigger some are smaller but we all got 'em) and OF COURSE , I am always wanting a new gun.

Here are some that I keep 'kicking around' to buy.  I figure I could (maybe) afford one of these every 6 months or so.  What order would you put them in?(also add you own 'list')

Ruger Blackhawk in 30 cal.

Ishapore 308

M1 Carbine

a 'teaching/loner' 38 special

That's the 'short list'.  What do ya thunk??

Next gun is a 4" barrel, stainless steel .357 for my wife.  When we're at our camp she carries a 4" Charter Arms .357.  She's happy with it but I don't like it, and it's just plain ugly.  Got to find a gun that fits her hand.
Then maybe a 9MM sub compact for me.  My last one was a Kel Tec and honestly, I couldn't hit a barn from the inside, don't have a clue why.
Still haven't given up on a Vacarro in 45LC.

What one fills a need you don't already have covered, I'm guessing it's the "loaner" gun

Why the I-.308? Looks heavy and older than me! Almost. Mac.

Well here's my thinking.

Ruger 30 Blackhawk - I have (though not completely happy with) an after market 30 carbine.  I like the round and a handgun to match is cool and they seem to come and go at Ruger. (Plus I hear they shoot about 18 inches of flame out of the barrel! ;D )

The Ishy - I like big, old guns and I don't own a 308. 12 round mag at about 200.00 or less.

M1 Carbine - ACTUAL, REAL M1 Carbine.  I love this round and would like a good shooter.

38 "loner" - too often when I am teaching some one it is because they have a reason to learn (know what I mean?)

Man, I we lived closer, I'd ask you to order me an Ishy. Agree with your logic, and old but serviceable optics are probably available.
Mac.

I'm sure we could work it out.  On a C&R I am not allowed to run a business but I could buy a present for a friend and then transfer through an FFL.

As far as optics I would think any good smith could mount a scope.

Haz, I would get the .30 Blackhawk, Ruger discontinued them and they may get a little hard to find. I had one but sold it in a moment of weakness(Needed the money :( ) I wouldn't mind finding an other to replace it. The .30 Carbine Rifle would be my 2nd choice.

I had a Marlin 336RC (ranch carbine) made circa 1952. Had a scope put on it and it was a dream - as long as you didn't empty the magazine real quick. Got hotter than a $2 pistol if you did that.

I want a Colt Gunsite. I am trying to make that or just a 70 series as my next gun. Possibly the Smith and Wesson Gunsite but I keep hearing bad things, but people say bad things about Kimbers and my Desert Warrior has never had one malfuction (1500 rounds). I really just want a Colt 1911 though. I am just working hard and saving. You all know how it is.

IF it were me I'd start with the Semi-autos.

Now the one's I want I can sort of afford.

The Masada/ACR
SP 101 in .327 Mag
I keep thinking about a S&W model 460 or 500.  The only thing that would hold me back from the .500 is there is a law about hunting whitetails with .50 cals

Haz,
Get the Ruger .30 cal Blackhawk as a present to yourself Monday.  Ruger isn't making them anymore and the few I've come across recently have gone up in price for well worn ones.  Then get the M1 carbine.  Saw somewhere recently  that someone was suppose to be getting a bunch, but can't remember who.  Maybe Century.  Might have to jump on that 03-A3 at that price though.  Sure hate when those "targets of opportunity" come along when the funds are short or your saving and planning for something else.  Had that happen a couple of years ago when I was looking at a Winchester M1 carbine from an individual.  He couldn't decide how much he wanted for it and on the way home the local gun shop had a Smith Corona A3-03 for cheap.

     1.  Wouldn't be suprised to see Ruger come out with a Blackhawk in .327 Federal magnum maybe in a .32/.327/32-20 convertible.  I'd get that one quick.
     2.  Ruger charger
     3.  Rger Redhawk 4 inch .45 Colt

The Ruger catalog has a .480 round, I guess to get  a mine is bigger than yours (.460) type of contest.
Article said similiar to a 44 Magnum recoil. How big is big for a handgun?

Is it marketing hype? I can't imagine the ballistics are that much different, but as far as hunting, here in NC you cannot go deer hunting with a .22 WMR. Even if a head shot would drop it like a bad habit.

I am in the market for a 7 mm mag. I saw a Savagge for $290. I also on the trail of a Mossberg 500c in 20 ga. It would complete my set.

Sooner or later I WILL Buy a Smith & Wesson 649 in .357, and a KAHR PM45. I probably will get a Puma .454 Carbine one of these days. Those are the ones that Are actually really likely. When I can afford it, I'm going to get the 649 first. I'll probably end up with a Charter Arms Bulldog before its over. And Possibly a Kimber Compact Stainless II.

I would love to find a S&W 4506. Any help would be much appreciated.
I will be getting a taurus 24/7 full size .45 to go with my CCH weapon (a taurus millenium in .45)
Anybody know if the larger 24/7 magazine will function in the millenium?

Mr. .45, too bad you arent in NC. Lawman's Safety Supply has 6 or 7, 4506 police trade-ins, a couple of which were fired very little. $299. Not bad for a serious combat gun.

Hey Haz,
One can never have too many M1 Carbines. So that is where you should start.

The M1 Carbines are fun little guns to shoot and now is the time to get one before the Democrats take over in November and ban them. Same with ARs.

One of the clubs I used to belong to runs service rifle matches at 200 yards, but they let the Carbine shooters shoot at 100 yards. As a left handed shooter I opt for the Carbine -- it doesn't matter though the AR 15 guys still out shoot us. But we have more fun because we are not as serious.

CZ 52 in 7.62x25 Tokarev
CZ 82 in 9x18mm Makarov
CZ 40B in .40 S&W
Walther P22

Plus I have a Ruger LCP in hock.

One of the first Rugers I fired was the 30 carbine, and I still want one.  I'd make it #1.  I have a 44 mag super blackhawk, but the 30 cal is great.  My next would be the 38 loaner.  I teach the NRA basic pistol and having a good S&W model 10 or a Ruger SP101 would be nice.

Well I have two that are the next buys as soon as I can afford them. A lever gun. And a 1911 Colt. I dont own a Colt yet and I want one really bad. Being a combat vet I think it is one of those things that you need to have. I would really be happy with one of the WWI reproduction or the 70series repo. I would want to keep it forever and do whatever I feel to customize it. I know I will want a Beavertail on it. But most of all I would just appreciate it.

Careful now Hazcat...don't know if you've heard, but hell was filled beyond capacity these past four administrations so all overflow is now assigned to Windows Vista Help call centers.  ;D

As to guns I will own someday...

#1) A variety of 1911's...maybe by the time I'm 80, I'll find the perfect one.

#2)  A Savage Model 1899 Take-down in .22 High-Power.  Best gun for shooting varmints off a horse I've ever used.  Lost in a divorce. Ugghhhh

#3) Armalite AR-10.  I love the .308 and I love the AR platform.

#4) A brace of Ruger Mini's one Model 14 and one Model 30.  I plan on buying one in stainless and one in blue so I can keep them straight in my head.

#5) A gun safe full of Smith & Wesson's in all shapes, calibers, styles (revolver and stack guns) and sizes.

#6) Another gun safe full of Rugers...same as #5 above.

and on and on...thank God the wife loves to shoot too.

Title: Re: Gun(s) you want that you ACTUALLY might buy...
Post by: CybScryb on May 13, 2008, 09:43:59 PM
Yeah...the Savage 22 High Power is a pricey gun when you find one in good shape.  Paid about $500 for mine back in '83.  I consider them the prototype for the .223 and original Stoner (as far as ballistics).  But Sellier & Bellot sells new ammo and it's apparently a round that is widely used in Europe on small game.  I just love the gun...a friend bugged me for weeks to buy the gun and after three trips over a couple of months to the local gun show in Wichita, the owner and I came to a mutually agreeable price and I set about looking for dies, brass and bullets for reloading.  I didn't discover S & B until I'd moved to Las Vegas in '98.  But thanks to Old Western Scrounger and catalogs and lots of haunting of garage and yard sales, I eventually located enough brass to load 250 rounds and do some mounted coyote hunting in Wyoming.  What a blast...you'd spot the furry critters using glass on horseback, then dismount and go prone whilst keeping an eye on the ridge you thought they'd come over.  When they'd appear, you'd give a slight squeal with the rabbit call and then pop them while they were trying to fix on the location.  After two or three coyotes were taken the rest would get wise and run when they saw the horses.

They're elegant weapons for the time and they come in a variety of calibers including the .303 Savage and the .308 Winchester.  But a 22 High-Power in a scabbard on a horse will always be my preferred critter gitter, no matter where I live.  The financial attachments via children have dragged on for twelve years now but June of '08 is officially freedom day and by fall I should have a novel in the pipeline so hopefully I can round up a couple of grand and treat myself to a blast from the past.

I would imagine the 22 HP is used on roe deer (where legal) in Europe.

As far as what I would buy if I could come across one:

1)Win 12 in 16ga
2)Lungman semiauto in 6.5x55(still kicking myself for not buying one when they were surplussed)
