Hi again everybody!
Man-oh-man! I can't hardly contain myself. I think these grips look awesome ... If I don't say so myself. This first set isn't quite done. I have to notch out for the mag release button, but I think you get the idea.

I'll be back with more pics later today. ;D
What do you think?
-
Pretty slick there Kid!
-
Pretty cool.
-
Very nice (but counter sink the screws).
-
Very cool.
Always wanted to make grips but just never did. I had a small block of teak my dad gave me that for years I thought I'd make some 1911 grips out of, but just never got around to it and now I don't know where the teak is.

+1 Very sweet. Love the color...When will you be taking requests for more?
-
Roger that hazcat on the countersink. It was just something I slapped on the gun real quick once I put a finish on the grips. I got all giggly. ;D
I am working on some green/yellow ones now. I have some rough blanks cut out waiting for me.... A black and yellow... And pink and purple.
If you have some color combinations in mind that you would like to see, let me know.
-
Red, white and blue would be nice.
-
Okay... I'll have to give the red white and blue a try.
-
Pretty neat, Tyler.
-
Thanks everybody!

In the photos black and yellow almost looks like wood with a really wild grain.
-
I wonder if black, brown and light brown will look like wood with a very figured grain.
Neat stuff TD! Make some turkish walnut. :D
-
Lookin' good Tyler. You could probably sell some college colors grips.
-
That thought had crossed my mind. And I had searched last week on google.
Surprise...surprise....the one pic I found was part of a quiz to guess which colors jived up with whichever NHL, NFL, MLB, and NBA teams. The surprise comes from that fact I didn't know that each of the teams had three colors. ???
I have been image google'ing micarta....and man! I can't believe some of the patterns or designs just in how the fabric is set. Some of the grips are cut out of a block of micarta that is like 2 inches thick...so on the grips all you see is basically the end grain of the individual threads. Whew! That is some long setting resin. :o
-
well I glued up canvas the other day. 18 layers to be exact. And since I don't have a fancy CNC router to make all the nice grip-ey grooves and golf ball like dimples, I thought it would be neat to add some ripples to the fabric to at least make for some visually interesting designs.
so I started cutting and sanding my rough blanks last night... and then it struck me....argghh.... I screwed up! >:(
here's a pic...see if you can figure out what I did wrong....

There are two grip panels...I call one the driver's side and the other the passenger's side. hence, the "D.S." and the "P.S. marked on the grips.
The ripples are angled one way....the correct way on the driver's side grip, but I suspect it will look like poo poo with the designs angled the wrong way on the passenger's side grip panel
arghhh...
>:(
I've got some flate steel bar stock and some skinny rod that I am going to weld together to make a ripple-y mould.
-
I was using an old floor mat out of my truck to make the ripples by the way.
How's that for recycling?
;D
-
So dude, when are you going all-in on a 10/22 stock??
And I wonder if khaki material will come out looking like faux ivory?
Hmmmmmm......
-
I've got some old dockers I can't fit into any more. They are kinda khaki or tan. I could cut those up.

Get this.... I don't have a 10/22.
Yeah...I know...
That would be great to start a grip making or stock making company and be able to
Take gun purchases off my taxes. ;D
-
Really sweet Tyler. Like cool bowling ball schemes. Great job!

well, if I can get a rose into a transparent medium and then shape it into some 1911 grips...you'll be the first to know....
;D

Those are some real beauties.
-
Really like the red/black.
-
yeah, thanks guys!
I am impressed (if I don't say so myself).
It reminds me of the rosewood knobs and handles on my bench planes.
-
This last set looks great, Tyler.
Not that the others didn't, but these just appeal to me.
Great work....making something for everyone.
BTW, did you know today is my Birthday? ;D ;D ;D

these are possibly for another customer who requested that color combination.
You gotta give me more lead time for your next birthday, 'kay?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
by the way.

I
may need to buy more 1911's ;D
-
;D MY SON-IN-LAW FOUND HIS DREAM COLT 1911 SS, SO I HAD TO HELP HIM OUT & BUY HIS TAURUS 1911 SO HE COULD AFFORD HIS COLT. ;)
WE ARE HUGE LAKERS FANS, SO HOW 'BOUT PURPLE & YELLOW? 8) 8)

well.....well....well...
I guess I will have to chalk this up to one of life's hard knocks kinda lessons.
I have had a few people contact via PM or email me on other forums and say, "Can you do this?" or "What would blue and black look like?.... Oh, yeah, I like the red and black ones...I'll mail you a money order."
The money order never shows.
So I am not dicking around anymore with these grips until some money shows up.
Basically, money talks, bullshit walks.
Sorry, I don't mean to be so crass. And I really had visions of starting my own business here and being super customer service oriented....even offering a lifetime no B.S. guarantee just like Dillon does with their reloading presses, but I am tired of getting my chain yanked.
Thanks for interest, though. (shrugs shoulders)
