This is What Happens When You Have A Population That Has Never Seen or Interacted with a Firearm

Posted on April 29, 2012 by Robert Farago

A message from Vineland Municipal Utilities to their customers [h/t Stormlead]:

“On March 14, a Vineland [New Jersey] Municipal Utility meter reader was reading meters near the Winslow School and St. Isidore’s day care in Vineland.  The meter reader was using an automated electronic device to read water meters. This device is configured in such a way that it could possibly be mistaken for a firearm. Given recent events and concerns about violence in schools, the presence of the meter reader carrying the device was reported and emergency procedures were immediately implemented . . .

First of all, I would like to congratulate the responders for a job well done. I believe one can never be too safe under these circumstances. I also would like to apologize to those students, school administrators and parents who were upset by the incident.

To avoid a repeat in the future, we will take the following action.

• 1) VMU meter readers, in addition to their uniforms, will wear bright yellow vests with stenciling identifying them as VMU meter readers.

• 2) The device will be clearly marked in such a way that it could not be mistaken for a firearm.

Superintendent of Distribution

They put the school in lockdown....called the PoPo.....and implemented emergency procedures for a meter reading device....

 ;D

Good job...... ::)

Where's the shaking head emoticon...... ???

And this is how we are robbed of our liberties and freedoms, one meter reading at a time. It's for the children, after all [/sarcasm]

Well, if a student bought it to school to show what his dad does for a living, he would have been body slammed, handcuffed and suspended for two weeks under the Zero Tolerance policy.

HAHAHA! My daughter used to teach in that school district!!! The superintendent of the district had been bought out of his three previous jobs because he was such a tool but he seems to be connected....
Most people I know here in NJ have never even thought about what it would be like to HOLD a gun, much less ever seen one not on tv.
But then there are the others.... real people who laugh about it. They own guns and go through the mountainous bullshit paperwork to excercise their 2A rights to make sure that .gov knows people are willing to got the distance.
It's the land from hell...but you gotta be tough to own a gun here in joisey.
Ask me what I had to go through to change address on my FID card.

Ok, I'll bite.  Jay, what did you have to go through to change address on your FID Card?

For a change of address you need the same paperwork as the first day you walk in there except for the fingerprints... Big, long form with all your detailed ID, questions on "Have you ever.... are you under court order for.....domestic, mental, felony, member of an organization...blah blah blah". It also requires two references who must answer letters and forms from the PD inquiring as to your fitness to own a gun, etc. etc. Finish that and stick an $18 money order to it for NJ to do your background check. Then there's the mental health check permission form giving them permission to release any mental health records to the PD.  Then you wait for all that to happen.
I saved time by ordering 3 pistol purchase permits or I would have to wait that long AGAIN for them. They will piggyback them. Those are $2 each and I can only buy one handgun per month and the permits are only good for 90 days, but can be renewed for 90 more, but only once.

State police run a background check (NICS I guess) and collect all the money while local PD does all the legwork. Takes 3-5 weeks and I'll have a new paper card (with no photo) with my new address on it. But they know I'm tenacious....

Took me a moment to realize what you meant by FID Card. If I were you, I think I'd move somewhere, that when you mention FID card to a cop, they look at you and say; What the hell is that?

Or, when you ask who to contact for permission to buy a gun they tell you,"Your wife".

I'm OK with that, 'cause their estimates in-between meter readings are always low.

Holy crap, Jay!!  Several years ago when I moved to this county all I had to do was go to the Sheriff's Office, show them the STATE carry permit issued by the Sheriff of my FORMER county, and have them print up a new permit.  Took about 5 minutes.

Also, here in Iowa, as long as you have a valid carry permit, that also serves as your permit to acquire.  The only time you need a purchase permit (only needed for handgun purchases) is if you don't have an Iowa carry permit.

Ready to move here, yet?  We could use some good blues tunes.  ;D

I've got a rare and very nice day job that pays for everything so moving is tough. Plus I just moved into a nice home that I can afford too!  Somebody has to stay on the front lines!

And Cape May appears (from where I've been in Jersey which is most of it) to be a lovely little town!

Even in Manchester and Nashua you can spend your money without police permission.

The Police are (for the most part) doing what they're told!  They don't write the laws nor do the really understand them either!  They're there to clean up the mess after the crime...or they're part of the crime!

And according to the SCOTUS, they aren't required to enforce the laws either, yet they do, some of them, and usually badly.
