Bureaucratic red-tape at it's finest.....

Former Marine served the country but can't get Social Security card

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Patrick Daniels and his family have been collecting and filtering through mounds and mounds of paperwork for the past year.

Daniels was born in Columbia, but his American born parents adopted him when he was a toddler. Ever since, he's been living in the United States. But in the state's eyes, he's not a U.S. citizen.

"I mean it's like a spit in the face. II mean I served this country for four years. I've lost really good friends of mine," said Daniels.

In a move from Ohio, a majority of his adoption papers were lost, including any proof that he became a U.S. citizen.

As Alabama's immigration law drew attention and criticism, his mother urged him to get replacements.

"When my family told me that I needed this I was like alright, we can take of this. I can get this done in a week. No," said Daniels.

Daniels brought his California driver's license and military form called DD214 to the social security office.

That wasn't enough. Thus began a year long process.

He contacted Senator Jeff Sessions for help and eventually took a citizenship test only to find out what he already knew from an official in Atlanta's Immigration office.

"He flipped through a page and said ya, you're a citizen. I said well can I get some paperwork? Can I get something to leave here with something in my hands saying I am and he was like I'm sorry, I can't," said Daniels.

So far, the Daniels family has shelled out hundreds of dollars trying to get the right documentation for a replacement social security card. It's a process costing more than just money.

It's weighing heavily on Daniels' family.

"You want your child to have a shot at the future like any parent does and so the frustration is constantly there in a constant way," said Daniels Mom, Dianne.

Another reason to keep up with documents........

That sounds like BS.
You can't enlist without a SSN, it's what they've used in place of "serial numbers for about 60 years now.

A'yup!  It's why, after 33 years I still have my dog tags!  They're locked up with all of my important stuff because my SSN is stamped into them!

If I'm reading this right it isn't a case of he doesn't have an SSN...'cause he did enlist, I'm sure he got paid and filed taxes ect.
This seems to be more a case of he moved somewhere that requires him to prove citizenship by means of a limited list of "approved" documents that have been lost. In his quest to replace the missing documents he has run into the box checkers at the SS office who also won't accept anything that proves his identity except for their limited list of "approved" documents...which he has lost.
Having dealt with the local SS office as I take care of some of my Dad's affairs, this type of "competence" doesn't sound like BS to me.

Exactly the case.

He already had a number.....but can't get a replacement card due to the necessary documents needed by the SS Admin.

Yes, having now read the article, I'd agree both to your statement and the incompetence of the SS Department.  My wife is disabled and dealing with them has been a nightmare in the past!

This is an ugly area to get trapped.  Never lose all your documents.  Keep a passport even if you never use it.  Don't keep your AA card in your wallet.

You know what is funny?  My kids mom got a SS Card with the wrong number on it and worked under that number for years.  When she died someone suggested I look at getting survivors benefits for my kids and they couldn't find a record of her working under her correct number and the wrong one didn't count???

The issue with paperwork has always bothered me.  The President couldn't produce a birth certificate in three years.  This guy lost his somehow but there are no details to determine why!

I can get my hands on my BC, my original SS card, my "cradle roll", my school transcripts, my marriage certificate and any other import documents in about one minute or less!  I've been carrying most of them for nearly forty years in my strong box.
