NASHVILLE, Tenn. – George Lindsey, who spent nearly 30 years as the grinning Goober on The Andy Griffith Show and Hee Haw, has died. He was 83.
A press release from Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home in Nashville said Lindsay died early Sunday morning after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements were still being made.
Lindsey was the beanie-wearing Goober on The Andy Griffith Show from 1964 to 1968 and its successor, Mayberry RFD, from 1968 to 1971. He played the same jovial character — a service station attendant — on Hee Haw from 1971 until it went out of production in 1993.
Lindsey told The Associated Press in 1985 that "America has grown up with me. Goober is every man; everyone finds something to like about ol' Goober."
George Lindsey was born in Fairfield, Alabama, and raised in the small town of Jasper, Alabama. Lindsey graduated from Walker High School and then attended Kemper Military School and Florence State College (now the University of North Alabama) with a Bachelor of Bioscience in 1952. Before moving to Los Angeles, he was a public high school teacher at Hazel Green High School in Hazel Green, Alabama. After serving in the Air Force, he tried to break into show business in New York City.
------------------------------------------
Lindsey has raised over $1,000,000 for Alabama Special Olympics through 17 years of the George Lindsey Celebrity Weekend and Golf Tournament in Montgomery, Alabama and another $50,000 for the Alabama Association of Retarded Citizens. and participated as Head Coach-Winter Games in Minneapolis, MN Special Olympics National Competition.
He established and perpetuated the George Lindsey Academic Scholarships at University of North Alabama.

Thanks for your service and the memories.

RIP George "Goober" Lindsey...

Great memories of clean family entertainment. The entire cast of Andy Griffith needs to be thanked and remembered for the show they produced, the lives they lived on and off camera, and the legacies they leave behind.

+1 The GSM channel on Sundays and Thursdays plays "The Waltons" in marathon format....Came after The Andy Griffith Show, but also clean moral decent television....that taught a lesson about just being a good person and doing the right thing...
Now there is a show called "Sixteen And Pregnant" on MTV....and a host of other shows that degenerate a society's moral compass and is all part of the plan... :'(
Sad...

Don't forget all of the perversions on TLC and other channels that for some reason get advertised on channels I occasionally do watch. Seriously, did I need to know about some guy who married a bunch of "Sister Wives"? Or the 2 queers that left Manhattan to buy a farm in Connecticut with no clue? Seriously? Are we that hard up for "entertainment" these days?
More than sad. For those so inclined, you would do well to read 2 Timothy 3
3 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. 6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.
