OK - to borrow a phrase from the late George Carlin - I opened the handgun safe and the stink that came from within could knock a buzzard off a $ wagon.
I'm a leather holster guy - when the weather gets hot my IWB gets damp with sweat.
I have since learned to remove the pistols and place them in the safe sans-holster and leave them on top of the rifle safe to air out overnight which is helping.
I've taken the pistol safe outside to air out all weekend and the smell is abating, but I think needs a little more air time as the open cell foam has taken on a smell of its own.
What do you all do (if anything) to keep the leather from smelling like a swamp?
Are there cleaners/conditioners/magig bean juice out there to keep them cleaner/smelling like a spring day?
Thanks.

I think I've heard some of the 1911 guys say they shower with them......

Put them in the Freezer overnight.
It kills the bacteria, works on your gym shoes/sneakers and boots as well.

They need about 6 months, IF you don't open the door.

I used to sell saddles & assorted horse 'tack' in U.K. It was obvious, when leather was brought to us for repair, which had been tanned using animal urine/faeces and which by more modern methods.....especially when wet.

Very interesting, while I do not think mine was (LORD I PRAY it was NOT) the person who made it for me - does live in the next town over - I may ask him if it was.
And now that you say horse and tack shop - I live inthe western U.S. and we have three large tack shops, they too may help....
Thanks for giving me some ideas Bic.

RTFM,
If your safe got some mildew in it try to get that sorted ASAP... UV light/Ozone, bleach...heat, something to kill the mold and such. It'll be everywhere, leather, wood etc...

For the strong box; Damp Rid Bags, Damp Rid Bags, Dessicant, and more Damp Rid bags.....Keep is as dry as a popcorn flatulent event. ;)
Tack and boot shops also I believe used to have leather soap and/or deodorizer(s), which help.
Dry, dry, dry,....like a desert. Also put some Odor Eaters in the safe, like for your shoes....wipe it down on the inside, Mr. Clean works fine. If you have carpet at the bottom of the safe, shampoo/deodorize it.

I read an article by John Connor in either GUNS Magazine or American Handgunner that you can make your own desicant packs for safes and such out of the Crystal type Fresh Step cat litter. It has to be the crystal type.......just put in in an old sock and place in the safe.
