Title: Wait time for CPL/CCW poll
Post by: micamper on May 19, 2012, 06:47:06 AM
I live in Michigan (a shall issue state) and applied for my CPL in mid-March.  The county I live in had outsourced fingerprinting for CPLs and it took almost a month just to get fingerprinted.  The gun board only meets once a month and with the fingerprinting delay, my background check was not completed in time for the April meeting.  When I checked on the status last week, I was told my application did not make the May meeting, but there was a "good chance" it might make it in June.

Looks like it is going to take over 90 days for my CPL application to be processed.  I'm curious how long others waited...

In NC an 8 hour class is mandatory, including range time with your own firearm. Test and package, fingerprints, etc,....(with pmt), sent to Raleigh. Took 2-3 weeks.

When I moved to FL. The post BHO rush for CCW was on, late 08-early 09, Dept. Of Ag. handles the issuance. Took the gun show crash course. 2 hours, package, forms, fingerprints, open book test. Fire 1 rd. from a .38 furnished by instructor.

Fl. actually was smart enough to recognize the rush and added additional staff and it took about 3 weeks.

Now they have it streamlined to about 10 days to two weeks.

Sorry for your delay..90 days?   :-\

Here in MA people think it's difficult but nothing could be further from the truth.

A four hour NRA Home Safety course is the bare minimum without live fire.  Went to the local PD and filled out one form, had my fingerprints done, picture taken and paid the requested fee of 100 bucks and had it back in 10-14 days.  By law, they only have 45 days for the process.  It's good for 6 years.

Edit..some towns may be more difficult.

I got mine in NY back in 1985 or so,It took 6 months to get, mostly because of delays with the Judge that signed them.He would wait until he had a pile of applications before signing them. My Wife got hers in about 3 months,Guess they figured that a female had a greater need for a gun... ::) ::)

Oh,it is good for as long as I'm alive or revoked with good reason.

In NH the law stipulates no more than 14 days.
I had to wait 18 for my original here in Laconia because the lady who handles the paperwork had the Flu ( it was February ).
Renewal was 10 days.

Since you asked how long I waited, I answered accordingly.

In Alabama, I think it varies according to your county.  I'm not a drinker; so, I bought some hollowpoints for my pistol on my my 21st birthday and went to get my permit the next day (a Friday).  I was going to school about a half-hour away and drove up to the Sherrif's office to get it.  I filled out my paperwork and handed it and my money to the lady.  She said thanks and that I could pick it up the next week.  I asked if someone could come get it for me since my mom worked in that town and I was going to school out of town.  She said that would be ok then asked if I could come the next day (Saturday); I couldn't because of a field trip.  She then asked if I had time now; to which I replied, yes.  She proceeded to make the call and fill out the permit and hand it to me.  Took about 20 mins total.  Renewals since then are all in and out.

My folks just got theirs and they had to wait a few days mainly because the computer was down.  Long story short, it takes from no time to maybe a week to get one.

Hi;

Here in my County, the permit is good for 5 years then you have to re-new it for $20 and a week or 2 for the snail process to go through.  What is nice is that the Sheriff sends you a Reminder/notice that you are about due for renewal and tells you what you need and what to do to     get r' done !

IIRC it took about ten days to two weeks.  The sheriff sent me a reminder when it was about three months from expiring.  Renewed it through the mail.

Not sure if there is a time requirement on the Sheriff's Office to turn around the permit.

But the law says you must deal with the Sheriff in the county where you live or one in an adjacent county.

I went to the Clermont County, which is adjacent to Hamilton County where I lived.  Clermont was know os a pro-CCW county and it took just a couple of weeks.

I moved a bit north to Butler County, and was not adjacent to Clermont any longer so I contacted the Butler County Sheriff's office by phone to see what was required for renewal.  They wanted copies of all the paper work I handed in to Clermont County...of which I did not make a copy...I know...duh.

I called the Clermont County Sherrif's Office and talked to the CCW Officer there and told him the problem.  He said he'd make all the copies and mail them to me, but first he was going to contact Butler County and see if he could help them get their act together.

He called me back a day or two later and told me to contact Butler County again and that things should go better.

I did.  Got a scheduled appointment with them, showed my current permit, signed a form or two, talked guns with the officer for 20 minutes, left and got a call to come pick up my new permit the next week.

At least in Ohio, the attitude of the County Sheriff seems to make all the difference.

I walked into the Sheriff's Office with the certificate from my training class, paid them my $50, waited while they entered my information in the computer, which ran the background check, smiled purty for the camera, and walked out with the permit.  Entire process (not including the required class) took maybe 20 minutes, tops.

Here in Ky. it takes about 30 days to receive your training certificate and another 30-45 days to receive your permit depending on how many applicants the state police have to go through. The price is right though only 60 bucks for a five year permit.

Minnesota has a max turn around.  If they do not reply within that time your application receipt becomes your permit to carry until the actual permit or the denial comes through.  My permit took three days (both original and renewal), and one of those was the post office.  Basically, the Sheriff signed it the same day I dropped it off.

20+ years ago, my first license was around 4 weeks.
My last renewal took 6 days.

Can't remember exactly about how long the first one took - maybe a 3 wks from start of class to permit in hand - but the last renewal was about 2 wks via the mail.
No more fingerprint cards for renewal. AZ DPS found out that fingerprints don't really change a bunch. Who knew!!??  ::)

Didn't really matter, CCW is no big deal here even w/o a permit.   (thank you Republican majority)

AL does vary by Sheriff. Mine here, original and renewal, (1 year per) were 20 minutes and less than ten, respectively..

I think the last time I renewed in Michigan it took about three months which is longer than it should have taken.  I think the law says 45 days from when the finger prints, application, background check is done.  Your receipt is your permit if it takes longer.  My county was swamped with applications as was much of MI and the county gun board was only meeting once a month then with only X number of appointment slots available, so I got pushed back a month.  I think they started meeting twice a month since then.  When I did get in they approved us in groups instead of individually.  In my county, after I got approved they still made me wait a week, because they make you pick it up at a different building and they take that time complete the actual permit and shuffle it to the other building.  There is still problems with some of the county fiefdoms in MI making up some of their own little rules.

Years ago before Michigan was a shall issue state I had a restricted CCW.  My renewal one time took more than six months and I was printed 3 times.  The local PD at that time would do the prints and send them to the FBI in DC.  The FBI would then OK the prints and send the OK back to local PD that then forwarded the info to the county.  I kept going back to the PD and they hadn't heard back from FBI.  FBI said they didn't have prints so printed again.  Same thing.  Went to local PD again and they called FBI and spoke to a friendly agent who said they still had no record of my prints.  The friendly agent said the problem was Clinton welfare to work hirees that trashed incoming prints instead of processing them.  Agent had local PD send prints to his attention and he faxed the OK back to them to finally speed up and move the process along.  At around the same time another applicant that was an amputee kept getting rejected because of incomplete prints even though fingerprint card was marked as amputee.  Same agent told local PD just to print the same hand for left and right hand and it finally went through and was approved.

I took the course almost as soon as it became law here in KY.  Back then it took about 6 weeks to get it, but they where new at it and just getting everything set up.  The class has even went from two days to one.

When I got my Washington State permit state law said 30 days or less, no class required I got mine in 3 weeks IIRC.  Oregon is 4-6 weeks after meeting the training requirements.
A right delayed is a right denied... ::)

Our program in ND is run by the state, but processed through the County Sheriff. So no-go on the same day stuff for me. But, it took a while for me to get my act together once I had the test results/application, but once everything was in hand, the Sheriff's staff were cool, even did my prints for the Utah app, and it wasn't much more than 2 weeks for the state to get everything done and the card back to me.

I suppose it varies by county and sheriff as to how quick you get it here.  Mine took about 2-3 weeks for my MN permit.  My Utah permit took considerably longer, between 2 and 3 months.

Took 5 weeks on the dot to get my original. (Speed of Government  :P) Only took 3 weeks to get my renewal. Even though I don't need it anymore. (Wyoming allows concealed carry without a permit now) I frequently travel to bordering states, and it's nice to not have to worry about changing my carry habits just because I crossed a juristictional boundry.

That's where Vermonter's get shafted, other "Constitutional carry" states make the permit optional, but Vermont never had any provision for permitting.
Other states can not reciprocate what doesn't exist, so Vermonter's can only carry in Vt.

You are correct on the sheriff comment.  I am lucky to live out of the city limits and fall under the Sheriff's jurisdiction.  I have always gotten along well with out County Sheriffs.  I even have his cell number in my phone.  Many Sheriffs don't like doing the paperwork, and a couple hate carry permits, so they drag their feet.  Our local Chief of Police, and a very good friend of mine, does not like permits and hates to approve them, so he will put them on the "to do" stack and stall.

An interesting thing in Minnesota is that the fee, by law, is actual cost of background check with a maximum of $100, and the renewal is the same with a max of $75 (I think).  The strange thing is that everyone charges $100 & $75.  A few have tried to charge $100 for renewal, but they have been called on it by applicants - typically instructors.

My Utah permit took just under six weeks from the date I put it in the mail until I had the card in hand.

In PA it varies by County.  In my county I was told it would be mailed to me in 6-8 weeks and I received it in under 2.  Same thing for the renewal.

I can't remember how long the wait was initially but for my renewal I just went to the sheriffs office, they ran a PICS check, gave me my new permit and I was done in 5 minutes.

It varies by county and the sheriff's willingness to let folks have one. Mine took about 3 weeks start to  finish, renewal takes about 2 weeks due to mail.

I think I clicked the wrong vote...but it took 59 days from time of the app. being sent.  In Louisiana it cost me just shy of $350.00.  But I had not been a resident for 15 years and an additional 50 bucks was needed to have an Alabama background check done.  I also had to order a divorce decree from Alabama.  That was another 50 bucks.  All in all it was worth it.  5 year permit and only 150 bucks to renew next time.

Did I mention that NH is $10 ?
No classes, no prints, and the form would not take a full page if they didn't give you plenty of room to print ,
Name, address, phone number, and 3 references.

ONLY $350 and $150 to renew!  Sounds like a poll tax to me.  My Oregon permit cost me $65 (not including class-I found an old NRA certificate from '99 and it worked) for 4 years, and IIRC my Washington State permit was $35 for 5 years and no class was required (I think I took the above class around that time though).

Too bad criminals don't get the full anal exam before they carry...

I had a permit in Albama years ago.  It cost 25 bucks for a year.  The law then was they had to prove you shouldn't have one in order to turn you down.  In Louisiana you have to prove you are compitent to have one.  However anyone that is not barred from owning a firearm in Louisiana can carry in there vehicle as it is considered an extension of your home.  And Louisiana is about to pass a law that will make it impossable to lose our 2A rights no matter what the fed gubment does.  The Katrina confiscation crap had a huge backlash here.
