Title: Trigger reach: G19 vs M&P9c
Post by: WIshooter on June 04, 2012, 06:08:02 PM
I am hoping to get an idea about the difference between the trigger reach and grip circumference of a Gen 4 G19 vs M&P9c.  I can't find a shop within 100 miles that has both in stock.  Much longer distance to rent one.  Looking for a compact 9 that I can carry, which could still be comfortable and shootable for some smaller handed females to practice with, or be handed in a real bad situation.

So for those of you that own, or have experience with both guns, do you feel the difference between the two is significant?  Anybody who could take some actual measurements?  Also very  interested in what people think about the perceived recoil between the two guns.
I know some of this is subjective, but your opinions would be very helpful.

Don't have any of those but look at the M&P Shield.  I have small hands/short fingers and after I get a few more rounds downrange and a good carry holster it will be one of my carry guns.

FWIW

PS:  Mine is 9mm but the .40 should be out soon if not already.

The Shield does look like a nice single stack, but I am kind of set on a mid to compact size double stack 9mm for this application.

Went with an m&p9c.

If anybody was wondering,

Linear measurement from (small insert) rear grip frame to middle of trigger face: 2 9/16".
Circumference of grip, behind trigger, in line with middle of trigger: approx. 5 5/8".
Circumference of grip, with trigger depressed fully to the rear: approx 6".
Circumference of grip frame to middle of trigger face reach: approx. 6 3/8".

Measured using a zip tie, so the rigidity of the tie will effect measurements a bit.
I know that actual measurements vs. subjective "feel" is not where it's at, but I have never been able to find these numbers online.  If anybody could post measurements for a g19, sr9, or any other comparable pistol, it would be a cool data point for the forum.

Thanks,
WIshooter

I don't have the 9c, but do have the .40c in M&P, to go with my full size .40, and except for the length of the grip, is identical with the medium grip inserts I use on the full size.

I do use the mags with the grip extensions on the .40c, as opposed to the one without, due to big hands and better stability for me.

The full size mags fit and function in the .40c, and the grip "feels" identical as far as circumference.

I also own a 6904 S&W 9, one of the older compact double stacks, and "perceived recoil is in the eye and mind of the shooter", actual recoil is usually, especially with female shooters, becomes a non issue with practice.

A friends wife we shoot with fires a full size 1911 and loves it, and she is not a big girl. As she introduced her female friends to firearms, uses a Ruger SR9c and after some instruction and practice, the "perceived recoil" is met with: "I thought it would kick much harder than that"....With that out of the way, she moves to the next chapter of stance, accuracy, and actually "shooting"
consistently hitting the target. ( Bowling pins are great for this.).

Just my .02 cents.

Good call on the 9c, and good shooting.
