Title: Should I?
Post by: jaybet on June 28, 2012, 08:53:55 AM
Kimber Ultra Carry II all black, just a bit dinged up but good shape,  + or - 500 round count. Private sale at $580?  Should I go for it? I was hoping to get a Defender but that's a 1L price tag.

Should I hold out for the Defender?

What is "just a bit".
At 500 rounds it's just getting broke in and probably shouldn't be dinged up at all.

I see a few scratches on the frame and the newbie gouge where the slide lever scratches if you don't know how to put it in right.

That's a decent price if it isn't too "dinged up".  If you are going to carry it it will get dinged up anyway.
I had a Kimber Pro carry and found the MSH to be quite pointy and a major pain in the side when carried.
And at 500 rounds it is probably about due for new recoil springs.

Me?  I'd buy it and flip it and put the profit toward what I really wanted.  YMMV.

Edit:  Just looked it up: replace recoil springs every 1800 rounds, FP & main springs every 5000 rounds.

He's in Joisey, I don't think he can carry!

I have also wanted Defender for years....but if a Kimber came up at that price I would probably jump on it.

Sorry, I'm not the one to give you any advice here.  I see $580 and think  New Glock.   ;D ;D

But enjoy what you do get.

Take care

That's not out of the realm of possibility. I'm very fond of the 1911 platform, but the 1K Defender cost is a deterrent. Second choice was a Glock 36. Since I don't own a Glock yet, I may end up there.

I see visions of a S&W 625.  Or a 627.  Or a 686.

[might have to add a few bucks]  :D

Haz would be proud of you.  I've never become a wheel gun fan.

I have followed your adventures with them and it sure seems you might have used one as a rattle and a speed loader as a teething ring  ;D ;D ;D

Already have a 686 7 round, a model 60 snub and a Ruger GP 161.
A .45 bottom feeding carry gun is next on the list.

Everyone should own a .357 wheel gun and a 1911.  There is a reason (actually, a whole bunch) they are classics.

Than skip the Kimber and buy a Commander frame 1911.  I'm a big guy and it hides real well, light enough to not bother you and still packs 8 in the mag and 1 in the pipe..

Good point...there are a zillion commander sized guns- even the RI and it's less than $500. I would like to have a Colt though. Maybe I'll just go slow, keep thinking, keep watching for the right piece.
But I have these purchase permits that have a shelf life...

The last comment I'll make is that the Commander has a full size frame and will take any mag made for a full size, uses the same followers, spring sets and just makes finding stuff easier!  But, you already know that...

Between the two Jaybet mentions, I would go with the Colt Defender. My buddy had owned one for years and had the opportunity to shoot it. Very smooth compared to the Kimber, that I loved, I fired. The Defender has it hands down.

Now as for Solus, if I had $580, Glock 34 or 35 is the next Glock purchase for me.

I have a Colt LW Officers Model and use it as one of my primary ccw guns.  If you can find one it should be way under 1K.  Not quite as decked out as the Defender but better than some.  The LW seems to work better that the stainless or regular steel model.  I probably wouldn't use it for an entire SD class but 1/2 day or more and wouldn't worry about it breaking.

As things go, I started thinking about money and the weight of a 1911 and what the thing was really FOR, which is to carry when I am able. I ended up finding a good deal on a Springfield Armory XDS which saga is on another thread. But...I still think when the wife ain't looking and the coffer is fuller, the Defender will be it.

And you seemed so close to doing it right and getting a Glock for a little while there  ;D ;D ;D
