Title: Damn you Michael Bane and Joe Mantegna! New (to me) Garand.
Post by: BAC on July 10, 2012, 02:40:30 PM
After watching the "Gun Stories" episode on the Garand I've been Jonesing for one.  The wife gave the go-ahead yesterday, so I got up at 4:30 this morning, drove to Camp Perry (3+ hours), bought a Garand, and drove home.  I had to be back by 1:30 so my wife could go to work (missed by 4 minutes).

All kidding aside, I've been wanting one for years.  My dad carried one in the Marines.  He's going to turn 77 this year, and I want to take him to the range to shoot a Garand one more time.  I don't think he's even handled a gun since he left the Corps.

I'll have more photos soon.  I just took it apart, lightly sanded the stock and applied a light coat of tung oil.  Waiting...

Close.  You have to show proof of citizenship, affiliate club membership, and training or match participation.  There's a list of documents they'll accept on the website.  Since I'd purchased from there before I only had to show current club membership.  Come to think of it, they didn't even ask to see my ID.

Since the National Matches started yesterday, it was busy.

Get more en bloc's,......and stick to the 150gr. rds.  New family heirloom. CONGRATS!!!!

Yes, TW, you did help spur me on.  Now I need to get to the range.

I bought 25 clips at the CMP store, as well as 2 cans of surplus Greek ammo (400 rounds).  One of the ammo cans is now loaded with full clips just a'waiting' for me.   ;D

Can't wait to hear the ping!

P.S.  Any hints on where I can get a good sling for it?

Why yes,...yes I do.....For the leather version I put on mine. Top notch quality. Very well priced. Exact replica, and I mean exact replica of the m-1907 Garand sling, complete with brass hardware. Also got my 1916 Luger holster from Steve as well...

Great sling.

Get the 51" totally adjustable to shoe-string tight if you prefer, and long enough to adjust to the forearm support as trained with back in the day.

You are going to really enjoy lighting your Garand up.....Congrats again......they always draw a crowd of admirers, from old Veterans, to the young "black rifle" crowd,,,,,they always give a hat tip to the Garand.

Based on the ser #, looks like a receiver of Oct. 42- Jul. 45 production, if there is a "WRA GHD" stamp that is for Guy H. Drewry, and would be period correct, since yours has the large "horseshoe" Winchester grip. SA's and the others were flatter in the grip curve.

Here's a great link with all kinds of Garand "tips" "tweaks" and info. Researching Garand info, is almost as fun as shooting it.....

TW, I ordered a sling from Mountain State Supply last night.  Got an email this morning saying it was ready to ship.  I should get it just in time to go to work next week.   :(

Hey that's great. They do a really fantastic job about fast shipping. Mine did not come "colored" but just the natural leather. I did darken mine up to match the stock with some KIWI Brown shoe polish and a few dabs of Aniline Leather Dye from a local horse & tack shop.

They use it to color saddles, bridles, and other riding gear.  They had some other stuff I can't remember, one just wipes it on and sets it in the son and it darkens right up.

Take Care.

The sling arrived today.  It's outside airing as it smells like tuna (and not in a good way).  I'm going to attack it with some saddle soap and leather dye.  Hopefully the odor subsides.  It is a really nice sling and will look gooooood on the Garand.

Thing 2:  I got to take the rifle to the range today to make sure it worked.  It does!  I sent 40 rounds downrange and it functioned flawlessly.  Now I can try to get my dad out to the range.

The recoil surprised me...I was expecting a lot more of it.  The Mosin slaps you, hard, but the Garand gently pushes.   :)

TW, you were right.  People gravitate toward the Garand.  There was a family (3 generations) trying out the grandson's new .17hmr rifle on the lane next to me, and the Grandpa and grandson couldn't take their eyes off it.  They (mostly grandpa) kept asking questions.  I offered to let him shoot it several times, but he didn't.

Oh, and the ping!  Everything I hoped it would be!   ;D

I think everyone in America (and Australia) should own a Garand.

FYI.  You can also use your CCL for this requirement...That's what I did.

A carry license counts as training, yes.  I used mine as well.  Coincidentally, a PA LTCF also counts as proof of citizenship.

Very Nice test drive report BAC, they do a great job at the CMP getting them back up to original spec's.

The sling will "settle down" with the smell thing. And it does make the rifle shine when attached. Now all you need is a bayonet, and a couple of Garand ammo belts,  ::)

I let a shooter friend have a go with mine two weeks ago,.....now he calls me and has found a Korean War era Garand bought through the CMP that is for sale through the original owner. (Seller is in a tough time with age and health and needs to sell it.)

Don't forget to sign up on the CMP estore page for ammo/stuff sales. $98 for the Greek milsurp for 200rds loose in a .30 cal. ammo can. Never had a problem with it. Early 70's manufacture, non-corrosive, non-berdan primed 152gr. BTFMJ, Garand milsurp. They will be running out soon. (cause I've been hoarding again,) ;)

Shipping is $11.95. Best price around.  Also the Federal & Winchester 150gr SP "hunting" ammo in 30-06, runs like a freakin' top in the Garand. Available at Wally-World, Bass Pro, Gander, etc,... Good to have some of that in the "stash" also.

Look fwd. to some more pics. As I posted, it's just a damn sexy rifle.

Take Care,

tw

I bought 2 cans of the Greek surplus ammo for $90 each when I bought the rifle.  25 clips cost $20.  With a third job I might be able to afford more ammo.  Already looking for a bayonet.  :)

Now I need to get an Enfield, Carcano, Arisaka, and k98k to complete the set.  It's nice to have a goal.

Ha, we have similar goals.   My 1st military rifle was my CMP SA Service Grade Special which is collector metal with CMP cartouched aftermarket furniture.  Then a CMP 1903A3 when they got a few in last Oct.  Then an impulse purchased  Mosin–Nagant 91-30 from a crate at the checkout of my local indoor range last march.   Next up are the same ones you listed (although I didn't have the Italian gun in my original list...added it).    No pic of the Nagant off and, but had these uploaded earlier.  The M1 pic was right after it arrived and I've since finished it with about 15 coats of tung oil.  I plan to drive over to Anniston(2hrs) and pick up a Service Grade with decent wood that I can mate with the SG Special's metal...which would then result in a collector grade rife so far as I'm concerned.

I also picked up a 192 count can of the Greek ammo with clips and bandoleer when I purchased the Garand Jan '11..

Sweet pick ups cmrothenb. If I haven't already, Welcome to DRTV. Glad your here. Seems many have joined the ol' military rifle love as the 1903's and M1 Carbines are gone from the CMP. :-\

But do have a "Big Brother, Little Brother" The carbine is not mine, but a good friend and co-worker/shooter, so they come out often. It's a Saginaw and a lot of fun to shoot with the larger mags.

If we hopefully replace this damn POTUS, I'd love to see "ONE" of the 700,000+ Korean carbines make it's way to me... ::)\
(http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm182/twyacht/M1GarandRange011.jpg)

BAC, the CMP e-store sells real Garand bayonets for about $68, and you can choose Onieda, AFH (American Fork & Hoe), and other period correct bayo's with scabbard. Seems the shows I frequent want $100 and up....

Most are the 10" but some WWII era from United Cutlery were 16". I opted for a 1950's AFH in 10. To stay period correct.

Libertytreecollectors.com sells period correct cleaning kits and Garand tool that all fits nice and tidy in the buttstock, for around $30-48 bucks.

I too have (now) 3 Moisin's, and 2 Mausers, 1 1891 Argentine Engineers Carbine in 7.65 x 54. and 1 full length rifle version as well.

Along with my 1916 DWM Luger with all matching numbers.

Still a babydoll to shoot with Remington 115gr. 9mm.

Should have grabbed a k98 when they were cheaper, I am also on the K31 Swiss want..... or a Swedish Mauser in 6.5mm

So many great guns, so little money.... ;)

Good shooting cm, and BAC, take care.

The original 16 inch Garand bayonets are darned scarce, and many are in crap condition, but there is a reason.
Before the war the Germans had switched to a 10" bayonet for the Mauser, so all the Garand's that went to Europe got  10" bayonets which saved weight and kept the rifle "handier".
The Japanese however, being blade nuts, retained the 16 " bayonet , so the Garands sent to the Pacific generally got full length bayonets, (the Garand used the same bayonet as the 03, the early 10" blades were cut down from these)
Due to the higher humidity and salt exposure a far smaller number of these survived.

I checked CMP's website to see if my club is an affiliate, I figured it was but wanted to make sure, and we are!  So BAC which grade did you get?  I am just looking for a shooter that I can ring the gong at 200 yards with at our club and maybe shoot some Bullseye, after some tinkering for accuracy.

I've wanted one for a while and getting ready to finish my Bachelor's Degree it would be a good gift to myself.

the Field Grade & Service Grades are still available for $525 to $695 (they've gone up),  :-\ and using your CMP club affiliation number on the application, you'll get a discount. I think its 5 to 15% through your club.

Field grades are totally shootable but more well worn. Headspace and throating is acceptable and will have more mixed parts on it.
Service Grades are worth it. Stock is not as beat up, more numbers match, and tolerances are a higher grade.

Here's the link to the sales page, Print the app. make color copies of your DL, CCW permit, Birth Certificate, and mail it to them, they will ship it to your door, a signature is required. They say 30-60 days, it took my order about 2 1/2-3 wks last summer.

Wish I could get another one,.....(sigh).... ::)

Get one quick.

I bought a service grade rifle with a new stock.  The muzzle reading was 1+ and throat was 2+.  I went there to get a special grade with new barrel, but this one spoke to me (and saved me a couple hundred bucks).  If you live anywhere near one of the CMP stores, I'd highly recommend picking one out yourself.  Worth it!

Can't wait to get out to the range again.
