Continuing US dominance in the shooting sports, Jamie Gray took the gold medal in the 50 meter smallbore rifle competition today. Oh, and just like Kim Rhode and Vincent Hancock before her, she set an Olympic record in the process. In an interview with NBC sports, when asked if there was anything else she’d like to say, she made a point of stating that the shooting sports have gotten a bad rap by some and that competitive shooting has nothing whatsoever to do with the negative connotations some have tried to associate them with. Good on you, Jamie.

Another thing I missed while watching my 43 soccer game, and 12th handball match, and ...
If there is a shooting event but soccer goes long, NBC will air the entire soccer match, do the commentary following, a couple commercials, and then MAYBE give you five of the 45 minutes planned for the shooting. However, the more likely thing will be they just drop shooting and go for boxing or equestrian.
I have two kids talking to their parents right now about how they can improve their physical health (weight and condition). I noticed some of the basic flaws in their shooting. They would not believe me, so I got them to work with me. Their routine was to come rushing to the range, run up and register, grab their gear and shoot - usually under the pressure of others waiting for them, rush back and register for the next round, shoot, and hurry home, up town or where ever.
I got them to do the following:
1. When they arrived at the range they unloaded their gear and set it up in the rack and shelves;
2. Sit down on the porch and relax, watch, visit with others;
3. Go in and register for two rounds spaced apart;
4. Go back out on the porch and visit while waiting to get called;
5. When called to shoot, get up, retrieve gear, and go directly to their shooting place;
6. Once on the line they close their eyes and relax while waiting for others (don't watch or worry about time frames).
They both saw improvements in their scores in both trap and smallbore two weeks in a row.
I then took it to the next level. I took a group of six and had them shoot - the above two were in the group. After they shot their matches I had them run 100 yards and then shoot a smallbore round. Then they ran 100 yard and shot a round of trap. Everyone of them saw a drop in scores. However, while the spring sports shooters saw a very small drop, the non-athletes could barely hit even after they thought they were recovered.
In Colorado the shooters are referred to as NRA (not really athletes). However, I have proven to a small group, at least two of them, that shooting sports is an athletic event. I have also managed to get a couple families to believe me that depending on your future plans there are benefits to shooting sports - college sport scholarships and military skills.
Come on NBC, look at the age range of shooting athletes in London, and give us a reason you are not promoting a sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.

It's simple enough, their agenda, and the narrative require them to reinforce the "guns bad" message, anything that contradicts that must be ignored or suppressed.
One of the things that most amuses me about NRA Police competition,
A line of pot gutted fat assed retired cops, like Hemphill and Tubbs, who, when it comes right down to it, are athletes at the same level as Phelps or Lance Armstrong. ;D

I actually caught the final round of Women's 3 position and saw Jamie win with a terrific 10.8 on her last shot! NBC actually showed the sport in a neutral light. The narrator was informative and actually knew something about shooting.
But after the medal presentation the NBC talking head came out with the comment "Americans are doing good with the guns".
The way the olympic smallbore is set up is actually good for TV. With the electronic targets that show the shots within a few seconds and the cameras on the shooters made the competition interesting.
