At least seven people were killed, including the suspected gunman, in a shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., south of Milwaukee on Sunday.
According to police, a 911 dispatcher received multiple calls from the temple at approximately 10:25 a.m. local time. An officer who responded to the scene engaged with the suspected gunman in the parking lot. The veteran officer was shot multiple times and is in surgery at Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital, according to Greenfield (Wis.) Police Chief Bradley Wentlandt. His condition is not known.
The suspect was "put down" and is presumed dead, Wentlandt said.
Tactical units conducting a sweep of the 17,000-square-foot temple discovered four bodies inside and three—including the gunman—in the parking lot. There were initial, unconfirmed reports of multiple shooters and a hostage situation, though the police spokesman would not confirm those reports. "We have not identified additional shooters," Wentlandt said.
A spokesman for Froedtert Hospital said a total of three victims were admitted in critical condition—two with gunshot wounds to the face and one with gunshot wounds to the abdomen. Other area hospitals were told to prepare for as many as 20 victims.
Dozens of worshipers, including women and children, were gathering for a meal before an 11:30 a.m. service when the shooting occurred. There are about 500 members in the congregation, officials say. Sikhism is a 500-year-old monotheist faith with about 27 million followers worldwide, and 500,000 in the United States.
According to local news reports, police and law enforcement officials are now interviewing worshipers in the basement of the temple.
In a statement, Wis. Gov. Scott Walker said his office is working with the FBI and local law enforcement in its investigation. According to ABC News, federal agents from the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms bureau were sent to the scene of the shooting.
"Our hearts go out to the victims and their families as we all struggle to comprehend the evil that begets this terrible violence," Walker said. "At the same time, we are filled with gratitude for our first responders, who show bravery and selflessness as they put aside their own safety to protect our neighbors and friends."
The Indian Embassy in Washington called it a "tragic incident" and said it has been in touch with the National Security Council and local authorities to monitor the situation.
Sunday's shooting comes less than a month after the Aurora, Colo., theater massacre, when 12 people were killed and 58 wounded during a midnight screening of "Dark Knight Rises."
Since 9/11, Sikh rights groups in the United States have reported a rise in bias attacks. There have been more than 700 incidents since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, according to the Associated Press. "Sikhs don't practice the same religion as Muslims," the AP noted, "but their long beards and turbans often cause them to be mistaken for Muslims, advocates say."

Oh course my heart goes out to the victims and their families.....
... but I can't help thinking "Ah, crap! Here we go again. And the anti-gun rhetoric was just starting to calm down."

If there are any good wogs it's the Sikhs - spread the word. Remember this quiz a few of us did a while back?

I do Bic, one of the things Sikhs are noted for is their loyalty to the country they live in, even Jews and Catholics can be iffy on that one.
If it had been Muslims I might have had something inappropriate to say, but Sikhs are better citizens than than alot of the ones who are descended from the Mayflower.

+1 tom and Bic,
Very sad and senseless act.

Me: "May their Gods let them rest in peace."
apparently, according to the AP, Sikhism is a monotheistic religion, so I recind my plural.

Witness describes 4 shooters at the temple:
-
They needed their "Jeanne Assam" at the church that day.
Evil can only triumph if good men (and women) do nothing,

Apparently it was some dumb ass who can't tell the difference between Muslims and non Muslims.

+1 Tom and I wouldn't be surprised if there are more dumb asses waiting in the wings.

That's the saddest part, due to ignorance these fine people are being smeared with the same brush as their ancient enemies.
I would be quite ambivalent had this happened at a Mosque, but the actual guilty group never seems to face the consequences of their actions.
Instead the anger is taken out on a group that has been fighting Islamic fanatics twice as long as we have.

Absolutely right, Tom.
Shortly after 9-11, a Sikh gas station owner/operator in Mesa, AZ was shot to death by a dedicated American non-thinker who yelled something like, "Go to hell you Muslim trash."
I have no problem with those who shoot, maim, or kill Muslim extremists. But Sikhs aren't part of that Muslim extremist group. As was hinted in your post, the Sikhs have been fighting Muslims almost since Muslims began.
My deepest sympathies go out to families and friends who have lost loved ones to this nut bag.
At least this time the perp made his way to hell in an expeditious fashion.

And Maj. Hasan has still not been brought to trial???

The Sikh Temple shooting is being labeled "domestic terrorism" (I'd say misdirected hate crime )
Meanwhile, the Ft Hood shooting by a guy yelling "Allah Akbar" while shooting US service members is classed as "work place violence".

I'm currently watching the Communist News Network's coverage and the talking head "reporter" (Erin something) just CAN'T seem to get anybody to blame the guns or lack of gun control.
The Police Chief said bluntly that thousands of people buy firearms everyday and don't ever use them on another person.
The ER doc she tried to goad into saying guns were the problem shut her down too with "the numbers really haven't changed and if people didn't use a gun they'd use a knife or other weapon."

Suicide bombers don't use guns.

Feds have flags at half-mast for this?
-
Our Gov. ordered our state's flags to half mast today to honor the dead and recognize how terrible this is. What about the hundreds killed in our own state each year?
I spoke with our mayor once about our city's flags being lowered for an active community member who volunteered many years including over 25 as a vol. firefighter. His response was that he felt the honor was deserved, but since the were no longer a department member and not killed helping it opens up to who and when do you do it for. I fully understand his comment, and to start arbitrarily lowering the flags for these events makes me ask why we have them fully raised anymore.
Our feel good society has blurred the lines between true honor and pushing agendas to the point that respect and honors are loosing their meaning and value.
