So at lunch today, I was standing in line behind a gentleman when his cell phone rings. The gentleman lifts shirt slightly on the left side to retrieve his cell. One problem he shows the entire line his two magazines. Before answering his phone, I would not have thought he was carrying as he had made very considered effort to prevent printing his side arm - his phone and wallet both on his weak side, loose camp shirt hanging well below belt line with no obvious bumps or bulges, practiced movements including picking up a pen another customer had dropped, etc.
However, I wonder how many people ever consider their extra magazine location let alone practice retrieval of our wallet, phone and the like without showing. I would love to Best Defense take up this topic. I know tonight I will be spending some time considering my extra magazine and getting my cell/wallet without showing them.

Real good point !
Inside the waist band or a shoulder rig.

Don't carry a extra mag. if can't solve it with 8 reounds of 45 or 10 mm. I am already dead.

lobby for an "open carry" provision to your state's CCW regulations (like Florida) so that accidential exposure of pistol does not violate any laws..
I carry a pocket pistol and just throw the extra mag in the off hand pocket...try to clean the junk out of it once in a while 8)

Here in the Peoples Republic, we have no requirement to conceal BUT, exposure of a sidearm is not a good idea in some areas.
Brandishing is in the eye of the beholder! Don't take any chances.
Some time ago, I was sitting in my local barber shop waiting for the chair when the local beat cop came in to shoot the bull with the barber. Not thinking, he was sitting to my right (strong) side, my time came and I stood and quickly realized that my .38s grip had caught my t-shirt and the holster and revolver were exposed to the cop the whole time. I adjusted my shirt, sat down and got my hair cut. He never said a word...there was no chance he didn't see my sidearm!

Faced with three bad guys, you take out two, put a round in the 3rd and he stumbles and as he raises his gun, you take aim and click yours at him....maybe you should just carry one extra round.
Was told a by a friend about a competitive action shooter who got in a home invasion gun fight and ran dry. He managed to duck out the garage and swore by high capacity hand guns and magazines from then on.
No one ever complained about having ammunition left over after a gun fight

Depending on what is carried a spare mag can be hidden in plain site in a nylon/cordura knife pouch. I have 2 different carry guns that I carry an extra mag that way...no problem...pocket carry without a cover garment or IWB w/cover garment!

I carry my extra mag owb right behind my holstered flashlight. The flashlight sticks out farther than the mag, and, not that it has occurred yet, I can playoff the extra mag with a "That's my flashlight." statement unless it is fully visible. Even then, I think it would take most people a few minutes at least to realize what they saw. Recent experience has taught me how clueless the general, unknowing public is when it comes to spotting a concealed carry. I've carried a Glock 20 owb under nothing but a Columbia PFG shirt around friends who would definitely call me out if they had seen it. I've carried my normal 26 iwb numerous times under nothing but a t-shirt around those same people without any clue from them. I've received lots of hugs while carrying with no discovery. I have been asked if I was carrying a couple of times but not because there was any sign of it. The first, 19 iwb, was a random joke that about gave me a heart attack because I was admittedly carrying in a questionable location surrounded by cops. I very carefully pulled my shirt up as far as possible and gave myself a patdown to calm the guy sitting next to me; he accepted that I didn't have one. The second time, 26 iwb, it was just me and a liberal northern Illinois girl (see hugs above) who I was trying to give a lesson in guns aren't evil. We were at her place, and I was going to let her hold one of mine. She thought I had to go home to get it. When I said it was closer than that, she asked if I had one on me. I didn't specifically answer that question but said I had to get it out of the truck which was true for the one I was going to get. She didn't know. Both times, I had a spare mag on the other side along with my flashlight. I've even had one of my trusted friends (a ccw holder who changed states and can't carry for now) who knows I carry admit to regularly looking for it without success. He said he's thought he saw it a couple of times only to realize it's my flashlight. I thanked him for looking and asked him to tell me in private if he ever does see it. I want to know if it's not working. Not that it's ever a good idea to take the concealed aspect too lackadaisically, I don't think it's too hard to actually conceal a pistol even when you can see it on you in every reflection. The exception is like this example where a knowledgeable concealed carrier spots it and knows.
I know laws vary, but is there any case where an exposed spare mag would actually be considered a crime?

I don't think the mag being exposed would be a crime.
But you have the alert know nothing who spots it and registers "Oh, that guys carry gun clips, why would anyone do that ?
"OH MY GOD HE"S GOT A GUN !"

Would be an excellent topic to discuss. Been using the Crossbreed so it is hard for me to print. Sometimes I just wear the Blackhawk Serpa cause I choose to. Printing is not an issue here but it is in some other states.
I do not carry an extra mag but will sometimes have an extra gun. Ruger LCP comes in real handy.

I have not read or heard of exposing magazines, clips, or ammunition as brandishing. It is a good lesson, because if you are in a conceal state you could just as easily do it on the gun side.
TAB,
It is not just about solving the problem with eight rounds. Sometimes things don't go as planned and the gun only goes bang once. You aren't prepared for that, so what do you do now? You entered into or modified a fight to a gun fight, and now you turned it into a rock fight on your side.

Mags do fail. When I'm biking no one seams to notice the spare mag in the pouch on my pack.

... Recent experience has taught me how clueless the general, unknowing public is when it comes to spotting a concealed carry...
I think a couple of things may be going on here. First, to some extent most people find it uncomfortable to visually examine those areas of a stranger's body most likely to conceal a weapon... guys don't want other guys to think they're doing a "package check" or whatever. Secondly, folks hang so many things around their waists now - cell phones, blocky smart phones, pagers (does anyone still use a pager?), flashlights, etc. - that many are de-sensitized to seeing bumps or bulges around the waist.
And then again, there are folks like this lady who are so distracted they wouldn't notice if you carried a RPG:
-
I had a friend, who knows that I carry, ask me if I was carrying (well, Duh!) and point to my cell phone lump.
I showed him it was a phone and he said "I thought you always carried." I let him continue in his ignorance.

I enjoy celebrating diversity in carrying concealed. On swamp a** hot humid days, a pocket pistol like my P3AT, and a spare mag in my shorts pocket is standard.
Sometimes I carry my Taurus snub IWB, with an extra Bianchi strip shorts pocket, or my compact semi-auto's like my M&P .40c, or S&W 6904. One spare mag in my pocket.
Cargo shorts are comfy and loose enough to get away with it. Which is generally year rd. attire down here.
Thankfully, Florida did pass a law this year that removes a "whoops" moment from "brandishing to the terror of the public." as long as you are not carrying in a prohibited location. As some anti would "rat you out" to mgt./owner,,,,etc...

There also also those stupid looking (to me anyway) cell phone holders that clip on the outside of your belt. I've never tried, but I'm pretty sure I could get a G-26 mag in one, and something like an LCP or kel-tec would be no problem. However, what we need to do is work on making fanny packs fashionable again. Those and Hawian shirts are God's gift to the CCW world. I can get away with the Hawian shirts here in Fl., but if you wear a fanny pack you might as be open carrying (unless your a German tourist). ;D

I'm 65 and I wear a FP here in Ohio all the time in any number of places and never get a second look, even by the police! Haven't tried a HS yet but I assume it will be the same.

I've never worried about someone seeing my extra mag, carried just behind my cell phone on the weak side. Most people wouldn't even notice it. Of those that did, most will be wondering what that was, since they saw it only briefly.
