Them are really young chickens, Bic.

Raise 'em up a bit 'til they sprout feathers.

Then you can call 'em chickens.

Right now they ain't chickens..  They's jest breakfast!

Nice hat-full of cackleberries, Bic.  :D

The quality is so much better from fresh ones.......Our hens are molting at the moment so we aren't getting near as many as normal.

My wife, (city girl) won't let me keep any.. If you've got water anywhere, even if it's just a bug rubber tub, you ought to get a couple of ducks. The eggs are fabulous!!

Hot set up is to have  your chicken coop in the middle with a large fenced area on each side.

Let the chickens range on one side and put in a French Intensive or raised bed garden on the other side.

Next year, swap sides.  The garden gets the benefit of the chicken droppings worked into the soil and the chickens get to feed on the remains of last years crop.  Both sides get a break in usage routine.

By hot, I'm guessing you meant the chicken poop fertilizer?

It has from fall to spring to cool down and that should do the trick.

Cow and horse manure also require that type of cooling down period.

I've never used it, but I've read that elephant manure is ready to go as soon as it hits the ground and is good stuff.  Circuses used to let you have it  just to get it hauled away...but, by now, they might know there is a market for it.

Now you know why folks say   "Solus knows his sh!t."

Plus ducks are better eating, and a whole lot quieter. And then are bunnies, not so impressed with the "eggs", but low muss, no noise and darn tasty. The Europeans call them "balcony chickens".
FQ13 who says its duck season, no, rabbitt season...... ;D

I bought two mallard chicks once raised them In my backyard in suburbia my four year old son cried said he only had a grumpy old dog. If I didn't buy them the lady at the sales counter was was  had them for over two yrs. in a 150' by 75' yard. They thought my son was there mom. Bought a cheap swimming pool for them they laid100s of good eggs great for breakfast. The grumpy old dog wouldn't leave the deck the mallards  would bite him in the ass every time he went out to pee. Finally gave the ducks away we liked the grumpy old dog Moore than the ducks they  never did learn to fly. It was funny my son is now 22 and in the Navy the grumpy old dog was a cocker spaniel he lived to 15 and had to be put down.  I wanted to eat them but I couldn't kill and eat my sons pets and siblings. There names we're snoopy + Woodstock  I think I can't remember but they new there names would come when called and perk up and chatter to them selves a green head and a hen they were funny pets.

Yeah, I meant that kind of "hot".. Back in the _____ old days, (a good 30+ years ago now. I don't do that anymore..) I came across some "homegrown", which in Florida means some of the best pot you'll ever come across.. If you do it yourself for awhile, and experiment, you can start to tell what seed stock they used, what part of the State, and world before that, that it came from, what kind of fertilizer they used, and so on..
This particular stuff made quite an impression. It tasted like oak leaves and chicken poop.. a few years later, I picked up a guy hitch hiking and when he offered to pay me with a joint, we got to talking about experiences..
He was the guy who grew the stuff from a few years prior..
All that to say that having used chicken poop before, you have to use it sparingly.. I would suggest waiting two years, and turning it twice a year or more before trying to plant a garden there.. It goes a long way..
Cow poop you can break down in four months.. Horse will get you whatever grain he was eating before he dropped it.

I left that life behind me many years ago, with eternal thanks and by the Grace of God..

Stories... I was holed up in a motel on a beach in Maine for a couple of weeks before I headed down this way. I had a conversation with the owners son, who was a CID/Narco guy in the Army. He said that there was no shortage of that kind of work in Afghanistan from the opium, heroin and (intensely good) pot in that part of the world..
It wouldn't surprise me if some of the problems the guys are bringing back home with them are a result of "exposure".. I've heard stories since the 80s that any of that was as easy to come by as an AK over there.. (And I expect you probably could trade a dozen eggs for an AK over there, too..)
Lest I ramble some more.. We need to poison the fields over there for a thousand years before we leave there.. It won't happen though..

Duck poop is better for fertilizer, just because it isn't quite as hot.. Awful slick, though..

I just had an idea.. Maybe we could get all the NYC urban elitists to buy into using their dog and cat crap for their window boxes or something, (or at least composting it there).. There are some enterprising young souls up there that could make a profit off of these Bloomberg types trying to corner the regional dog and cat market.. Bloomberg could force a separate recycling bin for the stuff just to make sure it was regulated..
What potential for some giggles..

Okay, I'm going to bed soon..  :-\
