Now if only someone would build a 3" sight extension to go with it.

Good thing that threaded end cap looks so tough to machine. If not for that, people might starting getting ideas............ ;D

Is it a problem if you make the adapter for yourself, (without $200, and "permission")?

Since the "adapter" is classified as a "silencer", yes, it would be a BIG problem.
If you got caught.

An early episode of "Burn Notice" showed Michael using an oil filter as an improvised suppressor. Now, he was hand holding it in front of a 9mm pistol, with which I would think you would want to have a REALLY firm grip on the filter. Bit I am glad to see that idea really works.

Velly intellesting.
**edit**
For just plinking.... a $70 adapter + $200 ATF stamp + a can of black paint, and you would still come out cheaper than a store-bought "can"........
Not really feasible for a handgun....... but on a rifle, with the right scope/ring combo, it would work.

I'm wondering how far they, (ATF), would pursue this if they caught you with the device, but not mounted to the gun? Does possession of the device in itself, without a filter attached to it, constitute a "suppressor", any more than owning a hacksaw and a shotgun together constitute owning a "sawed off shotgun"?

They were trying to screw people for having "Chore Boy" scrubbing pads because they could be used in suppressors.
They have put people in prison for possession of washers and O rings because they could be used to assemble suppressors.
And don't be to certain about the hacksaw and shot gun example, possession of both could be used to indicate intent.
Expecting less than the most oppressive possible interpretation from these fascist thugs is at best wishful thinking.

A plastic soda bottle taped to the barrel works very well. For one shot anyways. no I would not recomend trying it, big time illegal. Besides you don't want to duct tape anything to your gun.

All this stuff is illegal. So are dry ice bombs, yet they're all over You Tube. And you can buy Tannerite at Cabela's. At least until someone blows up a movie theater or barber shop with it. ::)

What have you got against duct tape and guns?
I tape a lot of things to my guns from time to time.

According to a Chicago cop at my sportsman club sometime ago, he confiscated a firearm with suppressor after a shooting. The FBI or BATF wanted the suppressor to to trace it to the manufacturer and registered owner. The cop replied to them that it was manufactured by FRAM. I don't remember what firearm it was, but the oil filter was a direct fit with the threads on the gun.
-
I find that very hard to beleave. every thread I have ever seen has been really odd ball thread sizes.

If you have the die you can cut whatever threads you want.
-
That is assumeing the barrel is close to the correct size. I doubt you could get it right for a real can. the threads need to be concentrict to the bore, not the out side of the barrel. that being said, any good machinist could cut the threads on a lathe. all they would need to know is the size of the thread and about alining it with the bore.
-
Just think, if you got an oil filter relocation kit from Jeggs you could still use your sights! :o
-
Now thats funny.

I haven't dealt in over the counter parts sales for many years, but a quick trip to the oil filter aisle of a good parts store or Wally World if you choose would find you some of the 1980's model domestic car V-6 filters that were 2.25" diameter long filters. Those and a tall rings would be perfect!

I call BS on that, all the oil filters I've dealt with were a much larger diameter thread than the outside diameter of a pistol barrel.
Look at the size of the adapter in the OP.
You are not going to put a 2 inch thread on a 1/2 inch barrel, nor will you put a 1/2 inch thread in a 2 inch hole.

Thank you for making my point. When there is a will there is a way....
Besides, the reply was to "really odd ball thread sizes." I find it hard to believe a machinist would think this is a hard project. ::)

I'll reply with an absolutely unequivocal, rock solid, NO COMMENT ;D
-
Most standard oil filters fall into about the 3/4" to 13/16" diameter range......and have straight (bolt-type) threads in either standard or metric.
Making and adapter would not be too difficult with a little knowledge, skill, and a few of the right tools.

Err....um......err....yeah, what he said......

Remember those black rubber "corks" from science class ?
The ones for test tubes and beakers, with the hole in the middle for a glass tube ?
IIRC they came in various sizes.

And, they sell certain sizes at Lowes (in the blue drawers, in the hardware section) .... and at some farm supply stores.........
