Title: Bizarre "download" tonight..
Post by: santahog on September 21, 2012, 12:45:10 AM
Farting around on the computer tonight, Norton popped up and said that a file was safe to download.. I clicked on it because I didn't download anything and there were over 150 (4K +/-) files on there that all started with "bank...".
I don't keep access to bank accounts on this thing. I call the bank and ask..
I have no idea what they were but I deleted them all the same.. No "exe" files in the bunch, that I noticed.. It felt like the time I discovered I got crabs off of the toilet because some moron (cook...) I worked with in the Army liked hookers...
JUST GET RID OF IT!! NOW!!! kind of feeling..
Check your machines and toilet seats for crabs..

Norton is a POS.

"Run, don't walk..." and download Avast antivirus software.  There's a free download and after what you just indicated I'd bet you have some "crabs" lurking on that machine.   Avast will find them when Norton and McAfee will not.

+1 on AVAST.  I was banging around using AVG (we have that at work) and my son finally turned me on to Avast. It has been very good so far.

I downloaded and ran Avast this AM, I'm still waiting on my registration key to fix what it found.
I'll let you know what I think afterwards.

I've been using AVG since Haz brought it to my attention a few years ago in a phone conversation. It has worked well so far. Is Avast that much better?

What's the general feeling on Kapersky Internet Security?

I got a 30 day free trial with the new laptop.

I downloaded the free version of avast. I ran a full system scan and found nothing. I have a hard time believing I didn't have a single virus since the only protection I have is mcafee.

Could it be since it was the free version or am I just lucky?

I've got it installed, I haven't noticed anything different yet.

My thoughts on Kapersky is that they are good at what they do..... so good THEY were the ones to tell the iraninas WHAT virus and WHO put it therein their nuke program - and then assisted them in removing the viruses to get them u p and running again

(Article about it was in Maximum PC a few moths ago)

So while they are good at doing what they do... ultimately they are a russian company and are looking out for themselves.
I'll always pass on them from now on.

I was an eSet NOD32 fanatic for the longest time but they are from Belorussia and have slipped in the" who to go to for antivirus software"  recently (again Maximum PC - and there's the russian connection again.... so there out too)

I've settled back in to AVG (free version) and it gets high marks from (say it with me now) Maximum PC - Somewhere I have a link to a very good - non-profit review site that will take me a day or two to find - but at one time I put a lot of stock in to what they said.

AVAST ranks a 7 of 10 and AVG 8 of 10 in the most recent...(here we go agaiiiiinnnnn) Maximum PC review.

You'll find that Norton has gone through a H U G E overhaul in the last year and now is NO  LONGER bloatware and handles it self very well - for a paid package.

I run the WebRoot software suite for everything BUT antivirus and LOVE them to pieces and they receive the 9+ Kick Ass award as one of the BEST antivirus suites.

Kapersky is tightly connected to the Russian Gov.
Kapersky himself , Like Putin, is former KGB, and no friend of America.

Didn't know that about Kapersky. I ran their Defender-Pro ($20 per year at wal-mart) for several years on my older Windows XP machines. Never had a problem until I went with Windows 7 in 2009. The Defender-Pro wouldn't upgrade and interface properly, and that's when Haz told me about AVG.

Thanks, TB.... I guess that was just a thread I missed.

August was a busy month with a lot of stress and family illnesses and such, along with a lot of other crap thrown in like having a new roof installed........ and on and on.........and it's rolling right over into September.

From the link:
In many ways, the relationship between the Kremlin and Kaspersky Lab is the same as the one between Washington and the big US security companies. Moscow gives millions to Kaspersky to help secure government networks—much as the Pentagon pours millions into contracts with McAfee and Symantec. Kaspersky helps the FSB track down cybercrooks; McAfee and Symantec work with the FBI.

Which one is more worrisome for the US citizen? A program that funnels useless info to Russia or one that funnels it to the FBI?

All I want is the best internet security/antivirus program.

Good point.  My thoughts exactly.

Russia is one of the leaders in "Cyber warfare", during a diplomatic conflict over energy pricing Estonia, one of the most wired nations in Eastern Europe, lost all communications and banking.
During the Russian invasion of Georgia that country also lost large portions of it's computerized infrastructure.
Do you want your computer dependent on the good will of a nation that is a direct competitor of America ?
Russia is so heavily dependent on industrial espionage that Governments and corporations warn their employees not to have sensitive data on lap tops taken into Russia, (China and France as well ).
Do you want to trust your information to foreign spies ?

Do you want to trust your information to foreign spies?

Do I want to trust it to Mueller or Holder?
They scare me more than Russia does by a long shot.

The avast! you downloaded is HQ'd in Prague, Czech Republic.

It's also not owned by a KGB operative.
In fact, the Czech Republic is more dedicated to "American ideals" than America is, so that information actually makes me feel better about it.

And that's a sad fact, indeed..
Talk about ass deep in rattlesnakes!! At least they're willing to admit that they're rattlesnakes instead of calling them cute little bunny rabbits (or trusted friends with a different point of view)..
