Title: In search of...
Post by: fatbaldguy on September 22, 2012, 06:29:10 PM
A nice single stack, with smooth and light trigger for Missus FBG.  She has arthritis and the DAO single stacks just don't cut it.  She has handled several, she likes the weight and size of the S&W Airweight.  I would like for her to have more than five available.  The Ruger P-85 is just too big for her to carry , especially to church.  (The church she likes is in a not so good part of town.)

She does like the grip on my Gov't, but .45acp is a bit much for her.  A Commander or clone in 9mm might be doable, maybe even a compact.  Gotta get her comfortable with carrying in condition one.

I handled a Bersa .380 that would make a nice pocket pistol for me.  Nice heft, and the action felt solid.  Haven't really heard much about that brand though.

I've had a Bersa Thunder for about 6 months now. No hiccups yet after about 500rds.

Maybe a Browning Hi-power? Its a classic for a reason. Light, smooth and hi-cap at 14 rounds, plus its slimmer than a 1911 and conceals better, but thats .45 vs 9mm so its a tradeoff. Pretty much a 1911 in all regards except for a magazine disconnect safety (the same guy designed both), and I've put a shat load of 9mm though it and never had an issue. They ain't cheap, but that cuts both ways, they ain't cheap ;). Mine's 40 years old and runs like a Swiss watch.
Good luck

Have her try the S&W Shield. I was very impressed with its trigger and lack of recoil and its 10+1 of 9mm. I carry a Glock 19 but this will be my new backup or  coat pocket gun. Good Luck.
Monty,

How about a Sig P238?  Small, single stack, single action in .380 acp.  Kind of a mini 1911.  That or a Colt Mustang.

Double action, Hi capacity, fairly light recoil, and not that expensive.

That looks very promising indeed, thank you!

I think I'm gonna have one hand picked for me for a pocket/mexican carry pistol.  A couple spare mags too.

Don't pull a Plaxico FBG! Holsters are wonderful things, even for pocket carry. The $20 you spend on a Nemisis pocket holster or a Don Hume IWB off EBAY is money wisely invested, unless you want to end up on youtube. ;D

There are the "Uncle Mike's" clip on IWB's or you can get or make a belt clip that anchors under the grip panel.

FBG, you might keep your eye out for a Sig P225/P6.

9mm single stack, only slightly bigger than a J frame (and not as fat), 8+1 cap, good DA/SA trigger, accurate.
My wife has RA and she loves the 225.

One other thought. I don't know much about combloc weapons, but I have not heard a bad word about Tokarevs or CZs, and both the pistols and ammo are cheap. I'd look at Classic Arms. They start at about $210 and they're giving the ammo away. Beyond that, I can't help you, but the Russians aren't known for issueing their soldiers an unreliable gun. It might be ugly, and I don't think you want to enter into a bullseye competion, but I'd bet it will go bang for a very reasonable price.

I've worked with ladies that were older or arthritic...most could tolerate a .380 or 9mm single stack of most any manufacture...what caused them the most difficulty was unloading a chambered round (with an adrenalin rush they could charge my 1911 with a 22# recoil spring, but after a "threat" was over had difficulty unloading the chambered round)... a solution for many of them was a Beretta M86... with a tip up barrel

for a single stack you might look at a Beretta M85, SW 439/639/39 for DA, or a Colt .380 Government Model or PocketLite for a single action

After further discussion with the missus, It would appear that she wants the S&W Airweight.  She's the one gonna be carrying it after all.  If'n she don't like it, she wont carry it.  Better five and a reload, than 9 sitting at the house. The LGS does have HKS speedloaders for it.  She also wants, of all things, the pink Pachmayr grips. ::)  Not such a bad thing, I really don't need another caliber to think about stocking up on.

I do still like the look of that Bersa, and the CZ.  So many guns, so little time, money, and spousal patience.

Airweight is a great little gun but have her try the Ruger LCR as well.  Out of the box, you can't beat the trigger on the Ruger!

a SW442 is one of the cheapest of the airweights without going exotic, though she may like having an exposed hammer...the Ruger LCR is after my time...my 442 is loaded with 125g Federal NyClads and carry a reload in a Bianchi speed strip... its less bulky than a HKS

Cool thing about NOT  having one is that you can fire it out of a jacket pocket. Its DAO, but its an SD weapon, not a range toy.

Beretta 85 is slim and it holds 9rnds of .380acp. I carry one and the grips feels great and recoil is almost nonexistent.

Problem solved.
Like you said, she wants it.  She just wants the pink grips so you don't steal it!   ;)

Like that would stop me. The airweights are great guns, and I'm secure in my masculinity. Besides, we do carry them concealed. ;)

I like the Ruger better myself.  Thought it was a better gun overall.  She wants the pink grips, and I know the Houge's will fit the S&W, not sure about the Ruger.  Don't know why i said they were Pachmayr's earlier.  I will research springs and stoning options on the S&W to make the trigger and function better/smoother

Take a look at the Browning BDA in .380.  It is a double stack but being a .380 it's a bit less bulky than a 9MM.  I've had one since '88 or so and it's a fine little gun that is reliable and safe....carries 13 rounds I think.

Or...she may like the Berretta Cheetah in 380.  http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=308172556 (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=308172556)
