Title: Pay It Forward: trading for gun parts ammo etc.
Post by: fightingquaker13 on September 29, 2012, 03:55:00 AM
I got this idea from another board, and I think its a great idea. We all have junk; parts, holsters, mags, ammo etc. that we aren't using. Here's the idea. You offer up something for free. If someone accepts, they do the same with another useful item that another board member might want, if they don't ship, they get negative feedback.
I'll start. I've got an NIB Tapco stock for a Saiga in basic black, about $60 retail  (counts as 2 922R parts). Yours free. Just PM me. Just put a useful item up for free, and the circle will continue. We all know each other so trust isn't an issue. This way, we can all clean out our closets and benefit. Think of it as a neighborhood garage sale, but without the money, just trading each other's stuff around in an indirect manner.

PS If this works, we should start a permanent thread for it. Lets say 20  posts to be eligible if it sticks.

Of all the things I've offered here, most I've given away and even paid the postage!  I think I've gotten about ten bucks for a holster once but given several hundred dollars worth of brass away for free!  Charity begins at home as they say.

Maybe Marshal could setup a "Give-away or Swap" forum.  I mean, if we can have a forum for cooking and recipes.....

Just call that forum  Swap Meet

Might not be a bad thing...... sort of to differentiate from the classified section.
I have sent a few things, like Tim mentioned, to some folks over the years and still have a stash of parts like 1911 parts, holsters and the like that I could part with.

Only one possible draw back I can see.

While most of us would be glad to pass on our unused items to others of our "Family" here I suspect it might not all be going to the family.

Like the number of one time posters we get when there is give away running, I'd think we might get some one time, or multi-time browsers of that forum.

"Be sure to check the DRTV Swap Meet forum for what you want before you spend money on it.  It's free there."

Worst case would be someone requesting all the stuff to be used for resale.

Thats why I suggested a sealed forum, 20 or more posts to get in.

When I've had something to give, I go private and work my way through the list of friends.  If after that no one wants it then I'm more than willing to give it to anyone.

That's what I usually do also.

Basically, what I'm looking to accomplish here is to have sort of a "scrap yard" or "used book bin" for members. You browse what's there and if you want it, its yours. You pay shipping, but you put something of your own in the bin. It would save us a lot of money and let us get some cool stuff, while cleaning out our junk drawers.

Deal accepted! I make nothing from this. He pays actual shipping, and gets a $60 stock I have no use for in return. He puts up some old parts that someone might want, and they do the same. Consider it a service to board members, as one man's trash is another's treasure. Think of it as a gear swapping site, only you pay it forward. You give, another gets, and sooner or later that part or holster you want is there.
FQ13 And yes, this really works. Enough free crap out there, with your stuff offered in return, and on a board like this you'll find what you want from somebody's bottom drawer that they'd forgotten they even bought. ;)

So I've got a question....
If I find a light that I'm looking for, having taken your rail, am I eligible? Is there an order?..
You know what I mean?

Nah, its a swap meet. You have you give, you want you pay shipping. Think of it like the old school farmer's co-ops. Half socialist half capitalist. Everyone wants to help their neighbor, but everyone wants something in return. You want, you take, but you also give. Others do likewise for the same reason. So you take the light and rail, good for you. Just give away some mags or AR parts (which we all have squirelled away with our box'o holsters) and someone else will find the perfect handguard or buffer tube, and they will put something else out there in return. Its the barter system, only here, it recognizes that the odds of two people having compatible  trades is low. BUT, if many people put trade goods into the marketplace at the same time, the odds of finding a match are much higher. It sounds socialist at first blush, but when you look at it, its pure capitalism. This for that, you just might have to wait a bit. But that's life when you're trading, not selling.

I'm not trying to look a gift horse in the mouth, but it kinda is a communist thing.. We're not trading, selling/buying or bartering..
It's the same thing that didn't work in the beginning, here. Without keeping score, it's kinda hard to keep balanced.

It's like the "got a cig-give a cig, need a cig-take a cig" jar, like we all did in college, when we were all sharing apartments and renting rooms in trailers, with the cigarette bums who liked to smoke more than paying for them.. You still had to have a monitor to keep the bums from doing all take and no give.. You had to give three before you could take one, and you weren't allowed to take more than three before you had to contribute again..
(That worked well in curbing the "aw, man, cut me some slack" routine that kept me from enduring the eternal guilt trip from every pothead that never had a joint, er uh, cigarette..) I don't miss those days...

I'll put something up. Not sure what I have yet, but I'll put it up.. (No AR parts.. Sorry. My last AR was an "issued" A2.)

Okay. It's yours if you want it. Pay the freight, (USPS) and I'll mail it to you.
> Hogue grip for a Sig 230/232, NIB <
PM me, but don't get rattled if I don't reply right away. We'll get there..

So, what do we call this?
  ;D "I'm on F.Q.'s Shit List"?  ;D
(Perhaps that's a bit strong, huh?..)  ::)
F.Q.'s Bucket List?
I don't know. It's your idea.. You name it!..

FQ, I like the idea, on another board they just post it as "Karma".
First reply, email or PM gets the item, posters choice.

They don't have a separate section for it, usually the rifle stuff goes in the rifle category, etc.

I have some stuff to get rid of God knows....I'm headed out of town for a couple of days but when I get back I'll get to digging.

Sorry dude, RL caught up with me, I've been on a job the last few days, no time to think about this. I'd intended to get to the USPS monday, but it'll probably be tommorow. I've been stupid busy, which is good, because I'm getting paid. I'll stick it in the smallest box I can, and email you the amount. Chill though, we're talking small dollars here.

What's the deal if I wanted to ship ammo? I have 100rds of .40 and that's a caliber I don't own and I'm not interested in owning. With ammo being what it is I'd like to offer them up but if shipping is a huge hassle then they can sit on the shelf.

Trade it. You'll find plenty of takers. And no its not a hassel. I use UPS, label it as "drill bits" and ship it. I think you can use USPS as well (though I'd check). That would be cheaper as you can use those flat rate boxes.

Ship it UPS as what it is. They'll slap on a sticker that says ORM-D (Other Regulated Materials - Domestic transport only) and you're good to go. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ORM-D

I've shipped ammo via UPS.......... I printed the ORM-D label and stuck it on before I got there, but as JF posted, they will put one on there for you.

This is the critical part to shipping ammunition. If it is 50 caliber or less, or 8 gauge or less, UPS will take the shipment in a sturdy box marked with a ORM-D, Cartridges, Small Arms label on the outside of the box. UPS does recommend using this label as opposed to a regular ORM-D label from our research and inquiries to UPS themselves. Part 172, subchapter E states the label should be affixed near the shipping address location on the package. By placing it here, the carrier will see it as they direct the package to the correct location during shipment.

You can ship ammo via UPS Ground.  You need to declare it, but UPS Ground will accept it and get it wherever it's supposed to go.  FedEX Ground may have the same deal.  Biggest thing is you can't send it by air, but you shouldn't have much of a problem except the expense of shipping.
