Never had one. Is it worth messing with? Don't have a bolt gun at all. (Russian) Ammo is cheap as long as it's available, (till Obama cuts off the Russian ammo).
Can't beat the price but don't know anything about the platform, other than it was used to great effect in it's day.
Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Because of ergonomics the felt recoil reminds one of angry mule and dynamite. Very short LOP,(Think Russian winter and heavy clothes) there is a rubber buttpad available that adds something like 1 and1/2 inches and supposedly reduces felt recoil by 30-40%? The rear sight has calibrations in KILOMETERS! Lousy trigger. Tank tough. Cheap Ammo. Pig sticker bayonet.
Ruskie, and Finnish snipers killed lots of Germans at long range with these. There are aftermarket stocks, bolts, triggers and etc.

You know for $100 for the gun, and ammo at ~ $0.20/round it's the cheapest center fire rifle going.
If you're a survivalist then it's perfect because the ammo comes in sealed tins, so you can bury it for later use.
If you're a hunter, you won't find a cheaper CF gun.
If you want to play gunsmith, you won't be risking but $100 if you totally screw it up. Put on a new stock, new trigger, new sights, new barrel? Ever wanted to try your hand at cutting a barrel down and re-crowning it?

I love mine! (all of them ....6...... )
There is something appealing to the humble working class Russian bolt gun to me that just clicks.
(and when I was MEGA broke - I was able to lay-a-way one for $65 so it holds a special place of its own)
If I had to grab one of them it would be the longer M91/30 flavor not the carbine M38/M44/M59 flavor - I just shoot them better.
The only issue I have with three of them - but not all - even firing from the same crate of ammo, is the lacquer coated steel sometimes gums up the bolt after a spirited set of firing (20 - 30 rounds....) and cools off and the bolts get real sticky.
There is a "fix" with emery cloth or a dremel to relieve a little fave material - I just know who does it and keep it in mind.
Do it - inexpensive gun - cheap ammo.
and its another gun.... who can argue that?

They also killed a lot of their own civilians and jews with them..

Saw a case deal for 20 @ ~ $90 a piece but every once in a while Big 5 will have them for $89, just need to set aside some cash for that occasion.
Alf hit on something I have been planning on doing and that is some gunsmithing, what better candidate than $100 Milsurp Hammer & Sickle stump thumper? Hmmm... 8)

I have a Mosin and love it. it's the hex receiver and about 18 feet long. I love it. don't think, just buy. $100.

Agreed with all of the above. But, if you want a much better rifle for short dollars, look at the Swiss K rifles. They're about three hundred give or take and they're tack drivers. Same deal as the Moisin, heavy, long and thrirty caliber ish,. The Swiss (as you might imagine), are just more accurate. Either way, you have a perfectly good deer rifle for a lot less than a Ruger or Remington which sell for around $700. If you want want a scope, spend $50 to get it drilled and tapped, and you're still saving money. As to ammo? Buy a case. It will last you a lifetime, and you're still about $.40 a round. Try matching that in 30-06 or .270. :o If you have the cash, I'd just buy one.

Have to agree with FQ to a point, ammo is more expensive than for the MN but the Shmidt Rubin straight pull K-31 is the most accurate general issue rifle on the market.

Can the K be had with a CR license?

Yep! Go to Classic Arms, they have a whole section on C@R stuff. I love those guys, but their web site sucks. You need to read the regular site AND the C@R page as they don't always cross list. Still, the ammo and mags I've ordered are great, and for like $10 extra they'll hand select a rifle for you (ie, pick of the litter, just depends on the litter though).
