Damien Hirst’s spin painting on an assault rifle fetched the top price in an auction that raised $675,000 for a peace charity.

Hirst’s “Spin AK-47 for Peace One Day” sold for 55,000 pounds ($89,000) last night in London. It had been estimated at 25,000 pounds to 35,000 pounds in a Phillips de Pury & Co. auction of works donated by contemporary artists to benefit Peace One Day’s Global Truce 2013 campaign.

The project, titled “AKA Peace,” was conceived by photographer Bran Symondson, a former soldier who served in Afghanistan. It followed an exhibition at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts showing 24 works by artists such as Antony Gormley, Marc Quinn and Sam Taylor-Wood inspired by the AK-47. The ICA show was curated by Jake Chapman, who, together with his brother Dinos, was among the contributing artists.

do you not find it ironic? A gun, at a peace charity?
I would think the hippies would go nuts over that. and in London no less.

On the surface it is ironic, but there is an underlying (probably unintended ) wisdom in the concept that if you're armed you are a lot safer than if your not.

It's part of the "Can't we all just hug?" crowd:

The exhibition, originally conceived by photographer Bran Symondson and now curated by artist Jake Chapman, coincided with Peace Day, Friday 21 September 2012 and will raise awareness of Peace Day and raise funds for Peace One Day’s Global Truce 2013 campaign.

Jeremy Gilley, founder of Peace One Day said, “AKA Peace is a really profound project; turning a weapon of destruction into a weapon of peace is awesome. The benefits of awareness and finance to help Global Truce 2013 is a great outcome.

Here's another link to the rest of the AKs...

Only if it were hand made and signed by Kalashnikov himself, and included one of his cutest grandaughters. On the other hand, the guys probably got the only legal AK in Britian, so maybe it wasn't such a bad deal. Tapco trigger group anyone? ;D

I kinda like this one.  Simple and more like a tea party at Bogan's than "give peace a chance".

A lot better than the Beadazzled one or the kids from East LA

Looking at all the artists interpretations of the artists for this exhibit, I'd say the guy that did this Rainbow AK is the least in need of psychiatric treatment.

And its worse than a pink or purple AR how? I think its kind of neat, if it was say $100 (off) the original price. But I like my guns plain. I don't see at as any worse than a cammoed gun or a pink one, I'd want a discount for those too. At least it has some style and originality to it. Plus, it would piss off the taliban. They's probably issue a Fatwa. :)

I didn't say anything bad about the Rainbow AK...just that it's artist appeared to be the least in need of mental health treatment when compared to the works of the other artist with items in that display.

The statue of the young boy who is holding an AK and has a penis for a nose and some kind of suction device looking mouth comes to mind.

I wouldn't want one, but it would have similar 'eye catching' mojo as an AK done in a Stars And Stripes pattern.....and I wouldn't want one of those either....nothing wrong with either one (except the Stars and Stripes one might violate Flag Respect Guidelines) or with someone who found them desirable...just not to my taste.

what makes a Duracoat painter, a good Duracoat painter?

It does appear to have been spun on some sort of "turntable" and then the paint applied while it was spinning.

I know in the past you could become "Duacote qualified" - or "Factory certified"
I'm NOT an artist and would look like rosie o'donnell puked on my precious all American made AK - just thought that if a "Factory certified" painter attempt it.... it may come out all cool spinney looking.

Just sayin'

(Yah it's my new wall paper too....)

It's easy to run the stuff if not careful....... and surface prep makes the biggest difference.
