There is nowhere near a Katrina type catastrophe in store as it stands now from this minimal storm. I've heard some bantering about snow, etc...regardless, there doesn't appear to be a huge threat here. If the power went off for a week in the cities or they were innudated with snow and the snow persisted then OK.
It would be a catastrophe, I think, for the Democrats if a couple of large cities went off the grid for more than a 4 or 5 days. It would be nice for the sheep to get a dose of the sordid underside of humanity they think they coexist with right before the election.
Note the final paragraph in the discussion talking about underestimating wind speed http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCDAT3+shtml/252037.shtml? (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCDAT3+shtml/252037.shtml?) This link only good for a few hours...methinks.

The dems will say it's a racist conspiracy by Romney.
Something serious to think about, The track is similar to the hurricane of 1938 that devastated the Northeast..
While Sandy is not currently packing anything like that much power, the areas that will be effected very seldom get hit by hurricanes.
We frequently get the effects of one running up the coast, but by then it's just rain, sometimes heavy.
Sandy though, is predicted to come ashore around NYC/ Long Island, they are not prepared for that kind of storm and a slow response could be used to discredit the Dems the same way they screamed about Bush after Katrina.
-
Plus remember there's that cold front moving in. Not only are building codes up there not geared to deal with Hurricanes, and not only don't most houses have serious hurricane shutters or storm glass, but there is the cold. Down here, after the storm, its generally in the '80s or higher. The standing water sucks, and the lack of electricity makes you sweat, but if you get flooded when its in the '30s? Thats ten times worse. Plus, you can suck it up with no AC, but no heat is a different animal, depending on how cold it gets. If it makes landfall in New England it could be very bad. In New York, it will at a minimum be very expensive, and if snow prevents aid from arriving?

It's supposed to be in the high 50's low 60's here Monday thru Thursday! The latest tracks put her into Cape May, NJ. Shouldn't post any real problems for them other than a lot of rain, a good blow and some inconvenience.
I say, like most New England storms, it's nothing to be concerned about.
Jay, batten down any hatch you might have and fill up the bath tub for toilet flushing! ;)
-
Interesting thought though.
What to do if sections of the country are without power during election day?
Hmmmm. Do any states have provisions in the voting laws that allow for late voting in the event of disasters?

Bah, Humbug. I've been hunkering down in hurricanes since I was 2, AND I moved early this year...inland by 5 miles. I am now a majestic 11 feet above sea level, which is a WORLD around here. My big thing now is all the trees in my yard.
This storm in February might be a problem, but the temperatures now won't hurt much if the power goes out. The models show it running right up the Delaware Bay and River AND we have a full moon monday, so there will be a big pile of water in the back bays either way. I think the shore islands will get washed pretty badly, but I don't think it's going to be like Katrina.
That open ocean is still pretty warm though, and that usually means a build-up once it's away from land. BUT it's a long way off and a lot can happen. it's been my experience that the models aren't usually very accurate and the media picks the path most likely to generate the most opportunity to generate hysteria.

Anything but a solid win for Obamy will be blamed in part on this storm, after the last four years we have learned you can blame everything on someone or something to duck responsibility!
-
If you guys will recall, that racist "W" conjured up Katrina because Republicans hate black people.
No surprise to me that Mitt conjured up this storm to nullify the "Sparklefart factor" and actually win in the Northeast. /sarc off
Seriously, if this storm does turn out to be the "100-year storm" as they are saying, it could have an impact on the vote. People might not be able to get to the polls, or they might not want to go out and get cold and wet, or whatever.
That's why I voted a solid "maybe" in this poll.

http://www.weather.com/maps/news/atlstorm18/stormtrack_large.html
Currently a category 2 storm, could be up to 3 by the time it hits land .
While it is only half the strength of the storm of '38 that also occurred during a full moon and it put the center of Providence RI under 30 feet of water.
Jay's sea level +11 probably will not be enough if it comes up the Chesapeake, if it lands further North he should be OK.
-
If it does get cold and the power is out, you might still have hot water if it is run on NG.
I survived 3 days of power out and no heat in 30's weather by using 3 1gal old Clorox bottles to sleep with.
-
Well, in Western MD we just plan to get wet. As for the NE, well if you're a Republican just walk to the polls (up to 50 miles okay). If you're a Democrat, just wait at home (the government will come and get you...haha). No late voting and no more early voting either. If the machines don't work, fill out the ballot by hand. If you can't read English, what the hell you doing voting anyway? And, how'd you get a driver's license or get registered? Jesus, what a country, eh?
-
My town (at the moment) has paper ballots and a Sharpie!
Not a problem and yes, it's within walking distance!
BTW, the local Fox station out of Boston ran a poll on the web last week and had Romney leading by REGISTERED voters that polled, 66% to 22% over ODumbass!

There are other reports where they're saying 5 inches of rain and 40 mph wind. I used to love the weather channel when it silently showed you maps. You could watch the map, watch the movement, and determine what was going to happen. Since Jim Cantore took over the Weather Channel with his band of screeching harpies, every rain storm and every snowflake is the mother of all a** raping storms, destined to go down as the "Day the World Ended". All our politicians, understandably not wanting to be the next Ray Nagin, automatically call evacuations so they don't have to think, make decisions, or accept any responsibility.
It really IS the Jersey Shore.

Now the information on track, winds and surge is getting a little better.
Whaddya' think now?
I am wondering what your local assessments are in the impact area today. Any change in your thinking?
Now, if you're 50-100 miles from the coast I wouldn't think so much. But if inside 50 miles from coast whaddya' think now?

I'm going to get a few more gallons of water, some batteries and go to work tomorrow. My wife is canceling a doctors appointment but that's the extent of what we've decided.
I'm 90 miles inland from the south and 45 from the east at nearly 800 ft above sea level and no expectation of winds above 30-40 sustained with heavier gusts. Might lose power so we've forgone going to the market till Wednesday.
-
Where I lived for 30 years in Cape May (2 blocks from the beach) is still dry but should start flooding tonight. The water is up pretty high.
Where I'm at now is about 5 miles from the ocean, 1-1/2 miles from the Delaware Bay. and about 3/4 mile from the canal that connects the two. Not worried a bit. There are plenty of low areas and swampy inlets to take most of the water.
I'm as prepared as I would have been anyway. My point is that they take the worst possible scenario and act like that's the least that is going to happen.
When it's over I'll bet the high doesn't push it in to land as much and the other low tears up the circulation rather than "combining" with Sandy.
Mark my words. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.
-
You're probably right. Remember, weather guys get paid to scare the crap out of you.
-
Just got back from the market to get some stuff as my kid and her man meat are coming up to watch a football game I could give two shits about! The Patriots and Rams in jolly old London...
Anyway...one thing in New England that always rings true during these storms is that people around here can be some rude assholes...
-
Last night they were reporting that Sandy was struggling to remain a hurricane.
It is currently a category 1 storm which, while stronger than we usually get is far from being the "Super storm" it is being hyped as.
This ain't no Katrina.

Shop sent everyone home at noon because of the blow. Tomorrow is questionable but thankfully, I'm an employee as of today so I get paid (exempt salaried) regardless!
Liquor stores remain open so we're good here!
;D
Jaybet's old digs are getting hammered...

Keep an eye on the storm surge predictions. Those are usually not too bad...i.e., are more predictable than the direction and strength of the hurricane.
-
So guess what? I was WRONG! Not for me personally...we dodged a bullet because the eye was just north of us so we got favorable winds that fought the surge and we made out with just twigs and leaves in the yard. Northward even ten, twenty miles got slammed, and north of that got thoroughly hammered; devastated. The storm did turn like I didn't believe it would, and one thing that helped us all was that it sped up and zoomed through against predictions. That saved a lot of extra water and longer winds.
Bad scene up the road.
-
Just think if it had been 125-130 MPH storm......
-
It seems to me that the worst damage was not so much caused by the storm, but by poor planning by people who forgot about the hurricane of 1938.
People all along the East coast need to build and plan just like people in Fl or along the Gulf coast.
Hurricanes do not often follow that track, but if you do not plan with the possibility in mind then you must suffer the consequences on the rare occasions when it does happen.
-
Current building codes along there require piles and elevations on new buildings that would handle most storms. Problem is, like you said, there hasn't been a superstorm in a long, long time so there was a lot of old construction. A lot of that is now condemnable or just gone.
However...there is some serious surge damage that has no explanation other than, "Day-um!!! Did you see that?"
-
After thoughts: Just think of the people who had the federal flood insurance and vow to rebuild their homes. They will keep doing that until one or two things happen...they die or we taxpayers run out of money! And then there were those who will "ride out the storm" no matter what. They get rescued and we taxpayers foot the bill. Then the President rolls in and says he will cut all the red tape to ease recovery, use Defense Department resources to the great extent, while cutting their budget $500B and facing another $600B in sequestration and cutting FEMA $800B, si guess who is gonna pay for all that recovery easing: the taxpayers, of course. Naturally all the money for any of this comes from China.
I propose we raise taxes on the Chinese and send them Obama as collateral.
