Title: Hurricane Sandy North East Storm
Post by: blackwolfe on October 28, 2012, 02:05:06 PM
Not sure how many of you may be in the path of the upcoming storm, but keep safe and keep us posted.

Looks like the low associated with it could back up over the great lakes.  We have lake shore warnings in my area for the southern portion of Lake Michigan with 40 -50 mph winds and 20 foot waves.  have seen waves this high a few times, but not common.

From the National Weather Service:

Issued by The National Weather Service
North Webster, IN
Sun, Oct 28, 2012, 10:52 AM EDT

TIMING... PERSISTENT HIGH WAVES MAY CAUSE LAKESHORE FLOODING AND SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION ALONG THE LAKE MICHIGAN SHORELINE LATE MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.

AN INTENSE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO MOVE SLOWLY FROM THE MID ATLANTIC STATES MONDAY TO LAKE ONTARIO WEDNESDAY CAUSING NORTHERLY WINDS OF 40 TO 50 MPH ON LAKE MICHIGAN DURING THIS PERIOD. THESE WINDS WILL CAUSE WAVES ON THE LAKE TO BUILD TO NEAR 20 FEET. THE PERSISTENT STRONG NORTH WINDS AND HIGH WAVES MAY RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION AND LAKESHORE FLOODING ALONG THE SOUTHERN SHORE OF THE LAKE.

Here is a link to the Southern Lake Michigan Buoy that gives data including wind and wave information:

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=45007

You can expand on the map to see where in lake Michigan the buoy is and on the expanded map there are other weather stations you can click on for data from those locations.

I'm on the west side of Wisconsin and fly back to Oregon Thursday night, from Eau Claire to Chicago the PDX.  Hopefully this storm will peter out by then, if not I'll see if I can fly out of the the Twin Cities.

To all those on the East Coast, keep us posted and I'll say a prayer for you.  Good luck and God speed.

Ok...I was wrong. Where I lived for 30 years is flooded nearly to hurricane Gloria levels and the storm doesn't get here 'till 10 pm tonight.

The big deal here is the amount of water this storm is pushing. The barrier islands (which means nearly all the beach communities) as well as the nearbye inlets and towns on the back bays will be devastated. Right now, at low tide before the storm hits, they are flooded anywhere from ankle to chest deep. It's going to probably double tonight.

Good news is, a large majority of these areas are second homes and businesses. Bad news, but not peoples primary residences.

And....for all you midwesterners who may have questions, there won't be much looting. Most areas along the coast are small communities, tourist and second home culture, so there's not a lot of entitlement shopping after a disaster.

This is going to wipe out the beach communities along the entire state of NJ.

Fortunately for me, I have moved offshore to a higher area. We're hoping for just a lousy couple of days, but already our life has a lot less drama not being where we used to live.

Currently in NH the surf is pretty impressive though I've seen much worse from ordinary winter storms.
As the storm moves onto land I expect the waves to lose strength, tide going out and the bulk of Cape Cod between us and the storm.

The storm has accellerated and the eye should pass within 20 miles of us within the hour. We won't get any water here other than the foot or so of rain coming down.
It's a funny, odd, calm spacey place...the eye of the hurricane. Sometimes you can see sunshine up through it. Probly not on this one though.

It feels like the eye is just north of us enough that we're not in it...we're on the southern edge. We've had heavy south west and west winds for hours and a lot of rain. The wind direction is great because the ocean is east and south of us. The wind is pushing the tide out of the Delaware Bay, not INTO it as predicted, and the eye is passing before high tide, earlier than predicted.

As much as we've been through these things so many times, it was nice to have LESS DRAMA in our lives. Our new digs are a fortress (at least for hurricanes). I don't think our old house will fare as well, but it could be a day or two till we can get in there to see.

Everyone is safe, drinking hot cocoa, bourbon, beer, whatever, and munching on cookies. The dog thinks it's all very amusing.

Pretty much what I expected up here.  Nothing but a bit of wind and maybe 1/2-3/4" of rainfall.  I expect the shop will be open in the morning.  Timing of the tides on the coast was crucial on the cape and islands.

My bride will be unpacking....she doesn't handle these things well at all!  Something in the French, Catholic that makes them fear literally everything when they should be trusting in their faith!

Plenty of water for the next few weeks.  Batteries are always needed so nothing will be wasted.

It isn't even a hurricane any more .

Superstorm Sandy loses hurricane status

The one thing I don't understand is how anybody could write such a stupidly self contradicting headline.

It's Yahoo. They don't have writers just some snot-nosed punk with a keyboard PLAYING journalist

Wind has calmed for now.  Rain let up an hour or so ago.  Still wet but not HEAVY.  Expecting it to pick up a liitle in a couple hours as the eye
 passes closer to BMore.

We had 20 - 30 mph winds all day yesterday, couple of stronger gusts during the night, rain was mostly just mist/drizzle with a couple of down pours, nothing really noteworthy though.
They had the weather graphic on TV you could watch the storm cells dissolving as they hit the cold front.
The only ones I know of that lost power were the ones who always do.

Just a lot of heavy rain and high winds here. No trees down that I can see but haven't been outside since day before yesterday. Right now it's light rain and occasionally breezy, so it looks like I'll be hauling the lawn furniture, etc., up from the garage to the back yard a little later. Heard some reports of flooding in Frederick. along the Monocacy, but heard only one siren from the local VFD so things must not be too bad. Guess we dodged the bullet! Son and family in Severn (near BWI) rode it well, no power outage (yet).

Nothing bad around the house.   A few trees down around the area.  Haven't wandered about yet.

BTW about 0130 someone broke into Target.  Not sure yet what/how much was taken.

Sustained 30-35 mph winds with gust of 50 or more this morning.  Southern Lake Michigan buoy measuring waves at 19-20 feet.

Wind warning in effect till 8:00 tonight and Lake Shore flood warnings until Wednesday afternoon.  Pretty good chance of rain for the next 3 days with a possibility of snow mixed in, but it shouldn't stick here for long.

I have also heard this refereed to as the storm that never ends.

So, going back to my "Mark my words" comment, I was more right than not. North of us (above Atlantic City, LBI, etc.) got washed hard, which is normal. I drove around Cape May today- nothing worth photographing. Sand on the beach road, a little flooding, a few trees down. I've seen a lot worse in a normal noreaster. We skated on this one.

I have watched storms come and lived through them and I must say, RARELY will a hurricane or tropical storm come up here and JOIN forces with another system. It is my experience they almost always detract from each other. But... NOAA has to raise enough of a stink so that the Governors can declare a state of emergency so that they can get all that federal money.

We dodged another bullet.

Another effort by the media to cover for Obama lying about Benghazi.
Did you hear about the "Super tanker" washed up on the shore ?
Like the "super Storm, it turned out to be a 170 ft water tanker.
We have partly sunny, 65, light breeze.

Yeah.. I caught a breathless Sheppard Smith talking about that "Super Tanker"..
I was more than a little suspicious about that one, given the source..
Why does that guy still work there???? (Because "Chicks dig him". That's why..)

We had a lot of rain and some very strong winds and were blessed not to have major damage, other neighbors where not, most of their shingles are in my yard and there is a lot of trees down and power out. Our power was only out for an hour or so, did not even bother to run the generator, and kind of enjoyed the kids not having power.

Henry was not so lucky, received this a little bit ago.

Dear Valued Henry Customers,

Hurricane Sandy has caused significant damage to the Henry Repeating Arms plant in Bayonne New Jersey. We do not have any electricity, nor do we have any  telephone or email service. We are hoping that we will once again be operational by the week of November 12th. In the meantime, we ask that you refrain from attempting to contact us. Also please refrain from shipping any firearms to us until we send a followup email confirming that we are once again operational. If you are a Henry vendor, please do not ship any parts to us until we confirm we are operational.

Rest assured, we will be back building our rifles again as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience, understanding and loyalty.

And if you were affected by the storm, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Sincerely,
Anthony Imperato
President
Henry Repeating Arms

Weird storm! Coastal MD took it in the shorts and far western MD recorded 2 feet of snow. Here in Middletown we are in a mountain valley and sometime the mountains protect us from the worst. We get the schnitzel when the storm comes directly up from the South.

No, I twisted my ankle stepping on it   ;D

I shouldn't joke to much we did have one death, a Contractor who went to check on a job site in Littleton was killed when the bank collapsed under him and he got buried in the slide.
