======

So today when my wife picked up my boys from school she was informed by my son's teacher that the picture he drew for an art contest could not be used. The picture was of an AR-15 with digital camo and the words "Zombie Gun" on the receiver. Nothing about it depicted violence in any way. He was very proud of his picture and looking forward to the art contest. Before leaving the school, my wife spoke with the principal and expressed her dissapointment in his decision. He said he made the decision because he didn't want to offend anyone. He also said his decision was partly because the drawing was of an "assault rifle".

She talked with him for a while and handled the situation in a very adult manner, explainig to him that it gives the impression to the kids that guns are bad and how fragile our gun rights are. I'm VERY proud of her for going to him to express her dissapointment. The school is a small private Christian school and is where I also attend church. The principal is also the associate pastor. She also pointed out to him that his Bible offends people yet he defends it. I'm really fed up.

SENT

In the Bible Jesus says if you own a cloak and a robe sell your cloak and buy a sword .
With that in mind how can you as a professed minister of God's word prevent this young man from displaying a picture of the modern equivalent of a sword .
I will note that the AR platform is the #1 selling home defense fire arm in America.
I will further point out that the 1st Amendment is not in place to protect "popular" statements, but quite the opposite.
If you are able to prevent this lad from displaying his picture because it might offend someone what prevents that same some one from silencing you and your "offensive" Christianity ?

How about having the kid redraw it with the words of the 2A written down? Kind of hard to agrue with that, unless you want to be neck deep in it. Either that or give Tom the principal's email address. I'm sure he could send, a "polite" reply. ;D

PS I will amend it to say this. If its a Quaker or Mennonite school where they are pacifists, and you should know that going in, then its ok. If not, make him sweat a little.

Most schools will not allow even a crayon drawn picture of a gun of any kind!  They will even kick a kid out for pretending his hand is a gun!  Even heard where a kid was kicked out for having a 1" (or smaller) toy in school!  Sending the wrong message AFAIC.

FWIW

Richard

PS:  Even suspended a girl for having a wooden rifle used in a marching group.

FQ obviously did not read the thread.
He certainly didn't read the second post.

I did, I just though you had more creativity if the principal needed a little "talking too". ;)

So the picture was going to be offensive to whom? Zombies? I didn't know zombies were that sensitive, certainly not politically correct! Besides, zombies are not even mentioned the bible..well not in my mackerel snapper version anyway. And since when do we have to be polite when someone is stepping on our rights? In my view, the problem started with the preacher teacher and was furthered by the polite mother. She should have poked him in the eye with an M1 pencil (used one to save a lieutenant one day, but that's another story).
