Does or did S&W ever make a J frame in .22
-
The answer in short is yes. Hope you've got plenty of money as they are NOT inexpensive. New or used they can be very expensive, $670 to $759 in stores.
On the bright side ammo is cheap.

Here's a 63 up for auction this week.
It's currently got a $325 high bid, but will probably go for >$600.

I own a S&W 617 and love to shoot this gun. It was not cheap and it's not quite the same as the 63 but it always shoots and it's always accurate. I love to plink and practice with .22. Just for aim. My carry is a 9mm xd and just might move to the .45 trp. Looking for a good holster to cover the .45 in my backpack.
You will love this .22.

Alf, the 617 would be a K frame
-
Sorry, you are of course right, Majer.
I'd say typo, but I just wasn't thinking straight when I typed that.
I think they're well priced compared with what you see on-line.

No need to apologize Alf,we all make mistakes,Just ask FQ... ;D ;D ;D

A little heavier than the j frame Smith is the Ruger SP 101 in .22
The old ones were 6 shot. The new ones are 8 shot with much better sights than than the old style. Some day I'll have one.

Would have liked to had a J i n.22 to match the 742 but I do have a security 6 so a SP-101 would be a good close second for .22 to plink / practice with there huh?
