Mayor: Damage from blast goes "for blocks on end"
10:25PM EST November 11. 2012 -
INDIANAPOLIS -- Authorities from various Indianapolis, Indiana and federal agencies scoured the rubble Sunday searching for clues to just what caused a massive and deadly explosion late Saturday night on the Far-Southside of the city.
But if answers were elusive -- no official cause has been determined -- the devastation was evident.
Neighbors, volunteers, investigators and others who traipsed through the area or viewed it from above were confronted with horrifying images of destruction.
The toll: Five homes destroyed; an additional 26 homes significantly damaged; 200 people forced from their homes; seven people injured; two people -- presumed to be a second grade teacher and her husband -- dead.
Fieldfare Way, a street in the heart of the Richmond Hill neighborhood, was the center of the blast that shattered windows and crumbled garage doors a block away.
Three houses on the street essentially were reduced to charred foundations.
Tony Burnett, 49, was laying in bed watching the Notre Dame football game a little after 11 p.m. Saturday when the explosion shook his home, knocked down doors and blew out windows.
He said he ran outside and saw that the house across the street was gone. Houses on either side were in flames.
Debris fell like snow.
"When I got outside it was still snowing, with all the pieces of insulation and vinyl siding coming down," Burnett said.
Burnett, his wife and their two dogs escaped without serious injury.
His neighbors, Jennifer L. and John D. Longworth, were believed to have died. Two bodies were removed from the Longworth home, but police and fire officials refused to confirm that they were the presumed victims.
Nontheless, about 100 educators, students and parents gathered Sunday night for a candlelight vigil at Southwest Elementary School, where Jennifer was a second grade teacher.
"You can tell teaching wasn't just a job for her," said Jessi Hersinger, whose son Levi was in Longworth's class last year. "She put her heart into it."
Greenwood Schools Superintendent David Edds called Jennifer "a wonderful teacher."
The Marion County, Ind., coroner's office will review dental records and consult with an expert before officially identifying the victims, said Chief Deputy Coroner Alfie Ballew.
Ballew declined to confirm the names, but she said the coroner's office has met with the family of the presumed victims.
Jennifer's father, Donald E. Buxton, declined an interview Sunday.
Another couple was rescued from the rubble of a home Saturday, said a co-worker.
Glenn and Gloria Olvey survived but were "battered, bruised and sore," said David Frazier.
"They were both trapped in the house and had to be evacuated," Frazier said.
Attempts to contact the Olveys were not successful.
According to records and Burnett, who lives across the street, Monserrate R. Shirley lives at the other destroyed home. Shirley was contacted by telephone Sunday but also declined an interview.
While three homes were leveled, two others were heavily damaged and must be bulldozed, city code inspectors said. About 26 more homes need extensive repairs before residents can return.
By Sunday morning, firefighters began allowing people back into about 50 of the least damaged homes. They could stay, but the homes were without power for part of the day.
Firefighters escorted others into more heavily damaged homes to retrieve medicine, pets or identification. But they had to seek shelter elsewhere.
The most heavily damaged houses, marked by a red tag, remained off limits.
Police, Indianapolis Fire Department arson investigators, federal agents and Citizens Energy crews remained in the neighborhood late Sunday.
The cause of the explosion remained a mystery, but attention focused on natural gas lines.
Dan Considine, spokesman for Citizens Energy, said the company's crews shut down the gas main along Fieldfare Way after the blast and on Sunday morning found no leaks.
If the blast was a gas explosion, it would add to a long and deadly string of such accidents in Indiana. The deadliest disaster in Indianapolis history was the Oct. 31, 1963, gas explosion that ripped through the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum, killing 74 people and injuring about 400 others.
Nearly five years later, on April 6, 1968, a gas explosion wiped out much of downtown Richmond, Ind., killing 41 and injuring scores more.
Last month, a vacant home in in Indianapolis was leveled by a ruptured gas line that caused an explosion.

That sucks. But after living there for four years I'll echo my boss. "Indiana, Northern charm and Southern efficiency". Good lord what a charlie foxtrot.
-
I'm fine doing plumbing...you make a mistake you see water spraying someplace.
I'm even fine doing electrical...make a mistake and you blow a fuse or circuit breaker...maybe smoke some appliance.
But gas work?: Make a mistake and some time in the middle of the night you get one of those.
-
Agree, sledge, looks like a Hellfire short round. I understand there was another one up there, too.
-
Nice Middle Class neighborhood. I Workerd Piping natural and propane gas in homes, nothing you want to do improperly thats for sure.
Interesting blast pattern of the house that is completely missing. Blast was from the inside for sure. But from the size of the explosion I would not rule out it having been a Meth Lab. Most homes would blow once the Gas was at 14% with the slightest spark and the damage would not have been as severe, but the house would have been gone.

So happens that the owner of that house was the first person to sign Indiana's Secession Petition...a coincidence I'm sure.
-
That blast was internal to the house. If a missile went into it the debris would be on one direction, not omnidirectional.
I thought about Meth lab myself but they don't usually TOTALLY obliterate a house, just take a section off.
The fact that Indy has a history of gas explosions is just another reason not to move there ;D
-
Meth labs can do that. Certain types use highly explosive chemicals during the process.
-
When I first saw this story it brought many thoughts to mind, like everyone else, Gas, Meth, bomb factory or even a direct hit. Iām not convinced we will ever know for sure what happened, but whatever it was I feel bad for the neighborhood.

I have responded to numerous meth labs, some were active cooks and a few in the active burning stage because the cooking went bad. Looking at the explosion pattern & destruction, stick with the natural gas answer. Natural gas (Methane, swamp gas etc.) has an LEL of 5% & a UEL of 15%, Below the 5% LEL is to lean to burn and above the 15% UEL is to rich, it's the everything in-between the 5% & 15% inclusive that can make the dreaded WOOMPF or in this case KABOOM sound you don't want to hear. Public service Co's will do hot taps on active gas lines because the atmosphere is to rich to burn ie:more than 15%. Since natural gas rises it most likely filled the house prior to finding an ignition source (hot water tank, furnace, automatic timers for lights, etc.) which caused such destruction. Chemicals used to make meth are flammable and do ignite during the cooking phase but I haven't seen explosions of that magnitude from them.
I have seen houses had an explosion from methane, the explosion was of such power it knocked the other houses off their foundations.
Remember Nat. Gas (Methane) rises & propane gas sinks & seeks low area's.

I was joking about the Hellfire. But, I think there are warheads that penetrate first and then blow internally. Makes it look like an internal blast, but the real reason is to get the blast deep into a building to do max damage to what is inside. Moot point here I believe.

Yes, certain weapons are designed to penetrate before exploding but most antitank rounds, including Hellfire, are shaped charges that explode externally and fire a stream of molten metal through the armor. Most air-to-ground missile impacts the blast is in the direction of flight so there is distinct directionality to the debris field, unlike Tyler's movie version.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ā Authorities launched a homicide investigation Monday into the house explosion that killed a young couple and left numerous homes uninhabitable in an Indianapolis neighborhood.
Indianapolis Homeland Security Director Gary Coons made the announcement after meeting with residents of the subdivision where the Nov. 10 blast occurred and shortly after funerals were held for the two victims, who lived next door to the house where investigators believe the explosion originated.
"We are turning this into a criminal homicide investigation," Coons said, marking the first time investigators have called the case criminal.
Search warrants are being executed and official are looking for a white van that was seen in the subdivision on the day of the blast, Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry said. Authorities are offering at least a $10,000 reward.
Curry said the investigation is aimed at "determining if there are individuals who may be responsible for this explosion and fire."
Neither he nor Coons took questions or indicated if they had any suspects. No arrests have been made.
Officials have said they believe natural gas was involved in the explosion, which destroyed five homes and left dozens damaged, some heavily. Damage has been estimated at $4.4 million.
Investigators have been focusing on appliances as they search for a cause of the explosion.
Hundreds of people attended the funerals earlier Monday for the couple killed in the explosion, 34-year-old John Dion Longworth and 36-year-old Jennifer Longworth. She was a teacher remembered for knitting gifts for her students, while her husband, an electronics expert, was known as a gardener and nature lover.
Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard spoke at the news conference and said he went to the Longworths' funeral and had a hard time coming to peace with what had happened.
"There is a search for truth and there is a search for justice," Ballard said.
The couple lived next door to the house where investigators are focusing. The co-owner of that house, John Shirley, told The Associated Press he had received a text message from his daughter recently saying the furnace in the home, which she shares with her mother and her mother's boyfriend, had gone out.
Shirley's ex-wife, Monserrate Shirley, said her boyfriend, Mark Leonard, had replaced the thermostat recently and the furnace had resumed working.
The couple was away at a casino at the time of the blast. The daughter was staying with a friend, and the family's cat was being boarded.
Monserrate Shirley's attorney, Randall Cable, declined comment on the announcement Monday evening.

Can we say criminal dumba$$. I'll work on a lot of things around the house but I'm not going anywhere near the gas lines or anything that controls them. Leave that stuff to the pros.
-
The way every one was out of the house, (even the pet ) makes it sound suspiciously like insurance fraud.

The article makes it look that way. Hope its not the case.

Gas on? Yeah, grab the cat! :o
-
why board the cat?
Unless they like went on vacation???
That's all kinds of fishey?
Ya, know, they are going to comb through their financials and their work history. If it looks like they were way underwater on that house or the bank was getting ready to foreclose, well there goes motivation.
I wonder if they meant thermocouple instead of thermostat???
-
Tyler, are you sure it wasn't a special Hellfire designed to penetrate the roof and seek the heat from the furnace or stove pilot before exploding? Imagination and technology are married aren't they?

Are you that f-ing stupid?
So these are special FEMA prison cars right?

Here's a hint...not everything is a government conspiracy. Some people are dumb enough to blow up thier house by letting the gas leak.[/font]

I was really just being facetious, besides it's more fun to turn everything into a conspiracy. I don't have cable TV so internet forums are my entertainment. ;D

It was probably this guy:

Damn straight. The one marked "NC" is in fact carrying blacks from North Carolina. They're most likely going to an undisclosed location somewhere in northern Montana. I read this on the Internet so don't tell me it isn't true dammit!
-
Actually back in Illinois around 1979-1980 I had a similar thing happen about a mile from my house. If you remember that was back when housing was dead because the Prime Interest Rate was around 20% - 21.5%. There was a new subdivision going in when the market went bust. The builder boarded up the models and went into bankruptcy. Some kids broke in during the Winter months and started screwing with the furnace. They wound up blowing the entire house off the foundation. There was insulation and sheetrock blown over a block away. The kids left and didn't get hurt. It damn near knocked me out of bed.

yup, just like arrest warrents were issued for the guy that made a low budget corny film about Islam in June or July and was blamed for some attack in Libya months later. Does not mean that one has anything to do with the other. not saying it isn't some meth lab, gas leak, fraud or some liberal wing nut making bombs in their basements, but the media and the gubmint are not the folks I trust for my info.

Got to remember about the movie guy, they got him for a parole violation so he isn't exactly an innocent victim.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) ā A natural gas explosion in one of New England's biggest cities on Friday destroyed two buildings and damaged others beyond repair but didn't kill anyone, authorities said.
Firefighters and gas company workers were among more than a dozen injured people, they said.
The explosion in a downtown area of Springfield, 90 miles west of Boston, blew out all windows in a three-block radius, leaving three more buildings irreparably damaged and prompting emergency workers to evacuate a six-story apartment building that was buckling.
Police Sgt. John Delaney said it looked as though there was a missile strike where the explosion leveled the multistory building at its epicenter.
Officials at two nearby hospitals said a total of 16 victims were transported with injuries but none was critical.
Firefighters responded to the scene at 4:20 p.m. and were investigating a gas leak when the blast happened shortly after 5 p.m.
The explosion, in an area of downtown Springfield with commercial properties and residences, destroyed a building that housed a Scores Gentlemen's Club.
Area resident Wayne Davis said he felt his apartment building shake a block away.
"I was laying down in bed, and I started feeling the building shaking and creaking," he said.
The Navy veteran said the boom from the explosion was louder than anything he'd ever heard, including the sound of a jet landing on an aircraft carrier.

Glad no one was hurt. Pretty soon they will make it manditory to put sniffers on all Nat. gas appliiances like they do for propane operated appliances in some states (Colorado for one). They work by shutting off the gas supply when a preset limit is detected, the earlier sniffers were so sensative that if a gust of wind blew down the furnace vent pipe the sniffer would shut down your furnace. Not good if you were away for a day or so in freezing temps. I would think that after 10 yrs someone has developed a better mousetrap (sniffer)
