So I have been shopping wally world and academy here in Houston. Then look at the prices on line. The prices seem to be the same, but if you order on-line - you have to pay for shipping. What do ya'll do? Is there a way to order on-line and not pay for shipping and still get a good price?

Add the shipping to the online price, if it's still cheaper get it, if not, buy local.
It's what actually comes out of your pocket that determines the price.
Unless you're talking about relatively rare calibers, then you get it where you can find it.

Exactly. bulk stuff/ case is generally cheaper online. A box or two, shipimg will kill you.

Online, you might not pay sales tax if there is no retail outlet in your state.
For small quantities, shipping might run more than sales tax.

What I do is search online for ammo suppliers that do not charge sales tax in my state. Then I get on their mailing lists for sales (easier than cruising the sites all the time). Sometimes their sales (usually bulk) offer free shipping as well! There is no cheap ammo here in MD anyway but I do check local prices just to be sure.

For handgun ammo, (9 MM & .45 ACP), I watch the sales at Cabela's, or else get it locally from www.unammo.com I end up having to pay the sales tax, but I avoid the shipping. So most of the time it's tit for tat. Places like www.natchezss.com still have bulk 9 MM for $9.95 per 50, but again factor in shipping and I can get it damn near as cheap here. With fuel prices the way they are, and are only going to go higher, shipping is only going to rise in cost. Ammo is dead weight. Pick up a case of .45 ACP. If you don't do it carefully, you'll strain something!

I've managed to find some deals on 223 and 9mm online, but I buy 500 to 1,000 rounds at a time. For small stuff like my 45 and 308, I buy a few boxes locally and eat the small difference, but I don't need lots of those rounds.

Mine too! Except he doesn't ship within NJ. They're about an hour from me so I go there (by appointment only). He usually drops the price even more since he's not shipping.

That site doesn't search every retailer and they don't take into account shippping/hazmat or taxes, but it's a place to give you some idea of what prices are going for. And a list of some of the on-line sellers.

As others said factor in shipping, but places like ammo man are on there as well. Other retailers like Fleet Farm don't advertise their ammo prices and can be pretty comparable, sometimes even competitive.
