Title: Internet manners
Post by: tombogan03884 on December 20, 2012, 08:01:50 AM
I have noticed a couple incidents lately of members who identify themselves with anonymous screen names being referred to by their actual name .
Many people who use a screen name do so for a reason, perhaps their job or position in the community requires anonymity.
I may question some ones integrity, sanity, or intelligence, but I think that "outing" a person in this manner shows a lack of respect and manners.
Thoughts ?

I posted my real name under my screen name a while back.  I never said anything under my screen name that I wouldn't say in public, face to face.  BUT I began to realize there people that hide behind their screen name and same some vile things.

As for proper etiquette I'd would refrain from "busting someone out" unless their behavior is such that it would be justified-like those @$$ hats that called for the shooting/murder of all NRA members.  In a case like that I might respond with name, rand, SSN, home address, cell number, physical discription and current location.  ;D

I think sometimes the 'familial closeness' between a few on here can cause actual names to slip out in discussions from time to time.

When I first found DRTV, I joined with the same screen name I had been using on several other forums such as car, truck, and other gun forums. It was just easier to have it all the same. I have thought several time about changing it on here, but so much time has passed that I just leave it as is.

I have posted my real name, Chuck Goins, on here numerous times and have no problem with anyone knowing it........ and like Magoo said, anything I say I would say anytime anywhere.

Tom, you make a good point. I respond to the handle, or a shortened version thereof. If a fellow member uses his real name, more power to him or her. If not, like me, I assume he or she has something to hide. It's best we concentrate on what is being said rather than who actually says it anyway.

My thinking is that while some use an anonymous screen name  so they can talk trash with out any consequences, but there are some who for one reason or another need to keep their forum comments separate  from their public identity.
For example a judge coming in here under his own name could not freely express himself the way he could anonymously.
Some one working in govt might not want his bosses to be able to search his name and see everything he's been saying on line.

I use a screen name that describes me.  My given name is Jeff Fyffe.  I live in a suburb of Dayton, Ohio.  Beavercreek, to be exact.  I'm not known for saying anything about someone that I wouldn't, or haven't  said to their face.  I've been called caustic, abrasive, brutally honest, (I do mean brutal, I pull no punches) direct, and loyal.  If you want to call me out, I'll give you a phone number or two.  Mine.

Just email or PM me.  I ain't shy.

Perfect example.

I used to spend a lot of quality time in Beavercreek, hanging around camera stores.
