Title: SP101
Post by: gunman42782 on December 24, 2012, 01:20:44 PM
Well, this walked into the shop and the boss let me have it for a decent price, so I got me another Christmas gift from myself.  It doesn'thave  the MIM parts, which is why I got rid of the last SP101 I had, the engraved one.  I hate MIM parts.  Cheap junk, IMHO.  Excuse my crappy pics.

What caliber ?
If I ever look to buy one where should I look for the MIM parts ?
As an unemployed machinist I have an aversion to them regardless of their quality.
Oh yeah, I hate you.
Merry Christmas  ;D

It is .357 Mag.  The new ones the hammer and trigger are MIM parts.  You can tell because the back of the trigger is dished out and the hammer is too.

No need to hate!

This is probably the 5th one of these I have owned.  I always end up buying another.  Think I will use this as a glove box gun in the truck.

OK, both those parts are easy to check, would have been different if it were some of the internal stuff.
Gun stores are funny about disassembling the merchandise.  ;D

The good ones are like that, you may never use it, but when you don't have one you don't feel right.
I think I've owned 4 or 5 Mossberg 500's over the years, haven't fired 50 rounds total so when money gets tight that's the first to go.
But you need a good shotgun.

Always loved the older ones, with me and my large hands, I just would have opted for a grip change. Simple fix.

Good find, and great pistol.  (Since they "walk into your shop" and all)..... ::)

Merry Christmas To You Sir!!!!! ;D

Guns may not be violent, we all know that an inanimate gun can not just up and kill some one.
But they are definitely capitalist.
We have all had experience with one that "just sold itself".  ;D

Had one of the early Sp101's that was .38 special only,Re-chambered it to .357 mag, then traded it to a friend fr a late 1940's S&W K-22,Wouldn't mind getting another one in .357Mag(or a 2&1/2 inch S&W Model 19)

Inanimate object though they may be, guns are still my mistress. :)

Is it any wonder why I'm single for the last 12 years?

Nice wheel gun.

You're welcome gunman!  It's been sitting in my range bag for the last two years.  Better it gets a new home than sit there collecting dust.  Don't forget to wash my fingerprints off of it before your next caper!

 ;D

Sp101 is one of my favorite Rugers ever. I have the 22lr,.357mag, and .327mag. I kind of wish they made one in 45lc or .30 carbine.

I have one in the same caliber and barrel length.  It's a superb shooter for me and it is my ccw gun when I carry it.  I really love revolvers. 8)

What's so bad about MIM parts? Why would Ruger put inferior parts on their products? I have an SP101 without the MIM trigger & a 6" GP100 with the MIM trigger. I can't tell the difference other than the back of the trigger is recessed.

For starters they have a granular grain structure rather than the lineal grain of machined parts, even machined castings get their grain stretched into a stronger linear structure through the machining process.
That stretching is why barrels need "stress relief" between being worked and being shot.
Secondly it takes jobs from machinists like me.

Taking away jobs is a pretty good reason to hate them. Until I have an MIM part fail I'll just hold a grudge.

MIM  is just a fancy casting.   like any other casting, when done right it is fine, when done poorly its not.   It really comes down to what you want.  As tom pointed out there are other reasons too or not too like them.  Me personally, I could careless, but I don't own a gun with MIM parts. There just has not been any guns that intrest me that have MIM parts.( I tend to like odd balls)
