"They" really don't hate guns. Guns provide them with safety and comfort.
They just hate them in anybody's hands but the hired help. AKA, police, military and "security".
A Police State is acceptable as long as you're part of the State or given permission because you're a celeb or have lots 'o ca$$h.

The ironic part is that since 1934 only one legally registered machine gun has been used in a crime.
The perp was a cop.
