Here is the Navy's newest combat ship. Built by General Dynamics/Bath iron Works in their Mobile, Alabama shipyards. Ain't she purdy:

To paraphrase Bob Uecker "Just a bit over budget." ::) Its a real shame that the Navy shot for the moon on the speed requirements for the LCS. The Navy REALLY needs the the LCS's now (no matter which design it chooses.) Another taxpayer funded boondoggle as there was a GREAT potential for foreign orders, but the costs required to meet the speed desired are OBSCENE, so the NAVY will most likely get stuck with the two seperate designs, or one will be selected and only a very few of that class will ever be built (just like the Seawolf) This class would be really valuable in the future(present) in the Persian Gulf, Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Guinea but always a day late and a dollar too much with DOD stuff.

Heck, that would make a great bass boat :D

The submarine USS North Carolina was commissioned last week in Wilmington. She is seen in the foreground of the last picture above... Ooops, she submerged!
I'm glad submariners are so smart. In the end, they, and those in space, will likely be the only survivors. GO NAVY!

Bring her up to the Great lakes and we'll give it a spin! ;D

The other LCS design, USS Freedom, was bulit in Marinette, WI. More conventional design but still awesome

Nice of the Chinese to lend us the money to buy such a neat boat. >:( >:( >:(

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is that thing?! I admit I don't keep up with boats or anything but that is......different. Almost looks like a sub with aspects of a boat mixed in.
-
It's a tri-hull. The three hulls allow for a lower profile in the water as well as greater stability. This also allows the ship to operate in extreme shallows.
-
Oh okay thanks, I heard the Navy was researching new boats but I thought they were still a while off.

The new CVN-21 class carrier looks like the "isalnd" is about to fall off the back of the ship!

I was stationed on CV-62 Independence from 93-95. Lets hope either LCS design isn't a COMPLETE failure

It's just a stealth frigate....

Interesting look. And I understand that they are still trying to work a few bugs out of the USS Gerald Ford. Apparently, and I have this on good authority, it keep bumping into things. They can't figure out why so far.
;D

Guess you have to be old like me and remember Ford first hand. As President, he kept physically messing up, bumped into the door frame of Air Force One, slipped off the last step of the steps down from the plane, shanked a golf ball into a crowd of reporters, stuff like that.
I'm not saying alcohol was not involved, he just seemed clumsy. My attempt at humor. ??? Guess I'll keep it to the joke thread.

The real things always got exaggerated on shows like Saturday Night Live. He wasn't really that clumsy. And at least HE never puked on any diplomats. ;D

I guess I'm "Old, like you" because I DO remember Ford. He was taller than usual, thats why he smacked his head. He helped get the country through an ackward time that could have been really bad, but it seems women HATED him, the only President to be shot at by a woman, not once, but TWICE. Whatever he had, I don't want ;D
