HARTFORD, Conn. —
The Newtown town clerk says she's been inundated with media requests for copies of death certificates of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and believes much of that information should not be released to the public.
Town Clerk Debbie Aurelia said she's concerned that details such as where the children are buried and their mothers' maiden names will be misused. She said she knows of families who've been threatened and intimidated since the Dec. 14 massacre.
Aurelia said her office has not yet released any requested death certificates.
Several related bills have been proposed. On Friday, the Government Administration and Elections Commission heard testimony on one bill exempting death certificates of minors from public disclosure for 10 years.
Both open records advocates and genealogists oppose such legislation.

Death certificates are private information! By law you can not obtain one unless you are a legal next of kin, guardian, or personal representative.

that's what I thought too....so why are they introducing the law, now?
my sister's death certificate has her social security number on it. I wouldn't want that info floating around the web either, but somehow I suspect that the 3 credit bureaus have that SSN pretty much on lock down with respect to starting new accounts.

M58 is correct.
I recently needed a copy of my Moms DC. My SIL had to prove her relationship to her and received a notarized copy from the town of record in Connecticut. They wouldn't send me one when I called..

They need to put this in law, because our so called fair media has perverted their powers. In the name of open information to keep the government honest they have managed to turn our courtrooms into media circuses, make our 911 calls for help into reality entertainment, and pry into our personal lives through private documents.
They want to limit our access to average firearms, much less the arms intended by the Founding Fathers, but they want no limit on their coffee shop gossip and nosieness.
