More advice from Joe Biden: 'Just fire the shotgun through the door'
In an interview with Field & Stream magazine on Monday, Vice President Joe Biden once again touted shotguns as the best weapon for self-defense, offering advice similar to the questionable instructions he gave during a Facebook town hall last week.
During that interview, Biden explained his suggestion to his wife Jill for handling an intruder.
“If there’s ever a problem,” Biden said he told his wife, “just walk out on the balcony here— walk out, put that double barrel shot gun and fire two blasts outside the house.”
The problem with Biden’s advice is that it would empty the shotgun and possibly get the shooter in trouble with the law.
Undaunted, Biden gave similar advice in his interview with the hunting and fishing magazine.

Field & Stream asked the Vice President whether so-called assault rifles and high-capacity clips, which the administration wants banned, should be allowed for self-defense and target practice.
Well, the way in which we measure it is—I think most scholars would say—is that as long as you have a weapon sufficient to be able to provide your self-defense,” Biden said. “I did one of these town-hall meetings on the Internet and one guy said, “Well, what happens when the end days come? What happens when there’s the earthquake? I live in California, and I have to protect myself.”
I said, “Well, you know, my shotgun will do better for you than your AR-15, because you want to keep someone away from your house, just fire the shotgun through the door.” Most people can handle a shotgun a hell of a lot better than they can a semiautomatic weapon in terms of both their aim and in terms of their ability to deter people coming. We can argue whether that’s true or not, but it is no argument that, for example, a shotgun could do the same job of protecting you. Now, granted, you can come back and say, “Well, a machine gun could do a better job of protecting me.” No one’s arguing we should make machine guns legal.

The Gov of Delaware was on a Fox News show and had a hard time keeping a straight face when asked about the comments of Joe. His only answer is that Joe is the #1 resident in the state. The Gov would not quote the Delaware law at all !

He says dumb stuff like that because TV and movies have conditioned him, and most of the general public, to believe that doing exactly that IS the appropriate response.
Every time the bad guy shows up a shot in the air or through the door scares them off or stops them in the movies so that MUST be OK in the real world. Very rarely is someone arrested for doing something that stupid on TV. I think I've only seen it once on an episode of CSI when a guy shot a round in the air and they proved it was his shot that killed someone a few blocks away.

In Greasy Joe's world, a single shotgun blast into the air will bring the chandelier crashing down on the bad guy, thwarting his bad intentions.
I'm sure he also has banana peels scattered around his sidewalk to trip up burglars and a pile of seed right next to the sign that reads "free bird seed" beneath a precariously hanging anvil to catch all of those pesky road runners.

I'm surprised that this idiot is not recommending a pump shotgun, because we all know that just racking the action will scare even the worst of the worst away.

Someone should contact all 50 Attorneys General and ask them if "The Vice President told me to do it" would be a sufficient defense to be acquitted after shooting a shotgun through a door and killing the wrong person.
I wonder if they would respond.

THe only way I can ever see shooting thru a door or wall being ok is if you are returning fire. even then its iffy.

Can I point out an important issue that our Vice President, in all of his firearm and self defense expertise, is missing?
I'm not taking credit for this, but I am pointing out what Michael Bane reminded us of last night.
Through testing it has been shown that for in house self defense a 5.56 or .223 round is less likely to cause collateral damage than a shotgun.

Brought this up with the wife last night after everyone else went to bed. She's all for shooting through the door ??? I tried, in vain I'm afraid, to convince her otherwise and I even used Massad Ayoob's name. So did I use Mas' name in vain? ;D
Anyway she is going to research it and I hope this sends her down the RKBA hole and adopts my worldview. ;)

At least she is open to the firearm as a tool of self defense. Now all you need to do is mold her properly. There is a series of steps people who are positive with guns go through very similar to the four awareness stages (unconscious unaware, conscious unaware, conscious aware and finally unconscious aware). As people evolve in the firearms world they are ignorant and appalled, ignorant, ignorant curious, ignorant accepting, ignorant know-it-all, educated know-it-all, educated, learning.
Sadly, on both sides of the evolutionary ladder people can be very obnoxious.
Hang in there, and teach her slow and steady.

It has been slow and steady. Santahog has given me some resources and I've been working on all of the family on firearm safety, defense and rights. Thanks for the info, it rings a bell from something I read. Maybe Massad Ayoob?

I believe the awareness levels are from Mas, but I created the learning curve based on experience.
