Don't know how folks feel about this, but I think it is important to stay at the dogs side till the end.

I saw the effect I had on my dog just when it was getting a shot for some infection.

Boggie was on the table and the Dr. and Nurse were getting ready to give the shot.

He was very uneasy...wouldn't hold still...not barking or snapping...just frightened terribly.

I stood up and just stroked his  nose with my finger...he sat and settled down and there wasn't a twitch when he was given the shot...

It was obvious that my presence and touch was overwhelmingly comforting to  him.

I never had to see him go, but I had decided if it came to where  he needed to be put to sleep, I owed it to  him to sit with  him and calm him and not let his last moments be spent alone and in fear.

Totally agree Solus. For all the right reasons. Dogs, even cats, regardless of family pets, or "working dogs" are an ingrained part of our family.

They bond with those they assist. Just like the family dog, it might as well be family. Because when you cut right down to it. They are.

I've put two extremely close dogs down, and one cat. Had their heads on my lap for every single one. A gentle caress, and a final look in their eyes as they closed, made a slight twitch, and died brings tears to my eyes as I think of it. They did not die alone, and were amongst a loving family, their suffering over.

Our pets have unconditional love. Period. Hard to find in this day and age except from our pets.

God Bless and all my prayers for them,.
