You're going to love it. Especially now that .223 is damn near as much per round as .308. The SOCOM 16 is about the most fun you can have with your clothes on!

Fantastic! Welcome to the world of the 14. Michael doesn't show us any love but I think its the greatest battle rifle platform and that has to mean something right? Have fun and let me know if you have any questions!

So, if someone were thinking about some sort of optics for a SOCOM 16, what would be the thing to go with?

Pro's and cons .
AR assembly/ disassembly is much simpler as are weapon modifications.
M 1A sling mounts are on the stock, not the barrel so shooting sling supported does not flex the barrel.

I just placed an order with Midway for this scope:

I thought about a red dot, but thought I would not be doing the rifle justice with one.

I'm saving for this one for my Ruger Scout.

Back on topic, the M1A, is THE rifle to have these days. I wouldn't kick an AR platform out of bed, I'm just sayin'.
-
I have nothing at all against the M1 series .
But I am more impressed with the simplicity and adaptability of the AR platform.
-
Hey, I like the AR too, and have one to prove it! There is just something about the Garand, the M-14, hell even the Mini 14 that turns me on!
-
Can't say I'm impressed with the Mini but you DO have a point. ;D

Apples and Oranges.
I have both, had an AK. All of them have pro's and con's and at the end of the day its trade offs and personal preference. I shoot comp and for most people that means speed, speed, speed! I cannot for the life of me, reload as fast with the 14 as I can my AR. That being said, I can't nail the long shots with that AR anywhere near the precision I can with my 14. One is a heavy, full figured lady that like stability and the other is a slim athlete that wants to be shot fast.
Given my druthers I'd sell everything before I got rid of my 14 but I do like having both.
As far as optics go... That is all personal preference and intended use. For 3 gun use I would keep it on the small side, x4 max and I prefer fix powered scopes. If you are just plinking or thinking about indoor use, then a red dot is the way to go. My AR has a red dot but I run my 14 open sighted.
Cheers!

That pretty much sums up "Life, the universe and everything . ;D
