Anybody have a thought as to why .22lr is ammo not available unless you're willing to spend 50 cents a round!
-
Other than hoarding.....
People are buying it up because it was cheap shooting.

local reports of individuals lining up at WalMart at 0330, so they can buy (at regular prices) what comes in daily, and then scalp the price at gun shows or e-bay

Fear. thats the only thing I can come up with.
-
FEAR of no ammo, is mostly the reason.
The only sort of .22 available is the high price target ammo.
It is being relieved a little. Cabela's up here recently got in the carry box with Federal for $85.00 for 2100 rounds.
That is 4 boxes of their bulk .22. Thats 4 cents a shot. It is the 40 grain copper plated. Shoots OK.
Of course it disappeared off the shelf very quickly.
The days of .50 a box of 50 are long gone.
I was at a store the other day, and a guy was looking to buy a .17HMR, because he could get ammo.
I have 2 Savage heavy barrel .17 HMR, and they are a true 125 yard shooter, with not much wind.
BUT, the ammo is anywhere from $10.00 (if you are lucky), to $14.00 a box for a box of 50 rounds.
That is .20 to .30 a shot. This is a very accurate round, a ball to shoot, deadly on varmints, and the ammo is around,
if you want to pay for it. My grandkids shoot ground squirrels, and I pay for the ammo.
I have a good quantity of .22 now, but my grandkids are going shooting with me at the range in a month or so,
and I am sure 1000 rounds will be gone from the inventory.

I'm getting tired of hearing about "hoarding".
You are mostly talking about people who chose to "get" while they still could because the last time it was months before supplies returned to near normal .
You and I either couldn't, or just didn't .
Sux to be us , that's life .

Well, Tom, i think if you want to be the only person on the firing line hoarding is fine. But if you want company? Guess it depends on what kind of firing line we are talking about, eh? This comment applies to much more than just .22LRs. Darwin is alive and well.

i have plenty, its sd ammo that I am rather low on only having about 200 rounds total.

Kind of like a guy that laughs at a prepper that has his stash ready for hard times yet whines that they can't get a can of beans when it's time....................

Sad but true 22lr out here is 60.00 a box of the rem golden bullets. Shit the cci mini mags are 9.99 a box if you can find any. I hope no hates me for this but I have two full Home depot buckets full of federal bulk 22lr. I would buy 2 or 3 boxes a week sometimes just to have. I did the same with the cheap federal 12ga target loads.

You are a bad person because JrLobo, and Ellis didn't plan ahead .
When you put it that way they sound like liberals .

After the last shortage I bought 10000 rounds of .22 and only paid about $275.
-
I have a buddy that used to buy a couple of the 550 packs every week just because. He stopped when he hit 80,000. He also has a reloading components in bulk quantities. Fortunate for me because he has sold me both for a fair price.
Don't bash the hoarders, befriend them and they will share ;D
FWIW after everything calms down I'll be ordering some bulk reloading components and begin acquiring some rimfire ammo in bulk.
-
I share and my buddies share. We team up and stock up on ammo and parts.

tom, didn't need to plan ahead. I have enough of everything. Found some bullets I had forgotten...YES!!! I bought 22 to test which is the best in my conversion unit so I have enough. Oh yes, I bought an AR at a non scalped price during this crunch, Just lucky I guess! LOL Probably have enough to last but I will buy more. After all, I'm only 66.

PS: Sorry, but people who are H...... do exist no matter what others might think IMHO. They have more than they will use in 2 lifetimes and won't sell or share and that is what I consider H....... Just calling a spade a spade.

I believe it is two fold:
1. The demand for ammunition of all calibers is straining raw material supplies and manufacturing facilities;
2. People are shooting .22lr much more due to the increase in shooter numbers, and the affordability of .22lr as compared to centerfire. This increase results in people purchasing more for current and future use.
I do not believe the hoarding argument. Between the military, other departments within the government, and increased shooting interest we are taxing our supply lines. Add to that that people will purchase to meet their needs and replenish their own empty shelves whenever they see something, and you a a perfect storm of supply and demand.
I was told last year that I was hoarding, because I had over 5,000 rounds of .22 lr in two different varieties. Guess what: I could not complete my league shooting this winter, because I ran out of quality .22lr for bullseye and couldn't find more. The only .22lr I have right now is set aside for Firearm Safety and Hunter Education class this summer. Pretty hard to run a class with our ammunition!

I guess this now refers to "the good ol' days". ;D

I go along with that, but that is less an "ammo" issue, than a "whatever happens to stick in their brain" issue .
Every now and then you hear about some one with a house beyond packed with something, could be anything from "Happy Meal toys to animals . (heard a story a while back about an old lady with over 50 cats she wasn't taking very good care of, when she died and didn't feed them they started eating her. )

see thats why I am thinking about a 30x40 garge/ shop. I have the room and i am pretty sure I can stick build it for about 40k just need to figure out how to come up with 40k lol
-
tom, I agree that there are hoarders of all sorts of weird things but since we are talking about ammo people are hoarding ammo too.

I stopped by Cabela's yesterday. They had PMC .223 Ball for $9.99 a box, (normally $5.49 pre Sandy Hook), and you would think it was a fire sale by the way they were all pushing each other out of the way to grab it! Meanwhile, they had plenty of Hi-Cap magazines on the rack, and I was the only customer in that isle. I picked up 2, 20 rounds +2 Mec-Gar's. One for my Beretta 92 FS, and another for both my Sig P-226's.
After Sandy Hook it was just the opposite. They had plenty of ammo, but no magazines. This is what I cannot understand about people. What has changed? They always seem to want what isn't avaliable. If there is another high body count school shooting, they'll strip every magazine off every J-Hook, at double the price no less. And they'll really think they scored when they do it.
I remember after right after Sandy Hook they had pallets of 9 MM and .45 ACP Ball for $13.95 and $21.95. Very few takers. Now that they have nothing, they'll go nuts when it comes in at no less than double in price. Apply this mentality to a grocery store after a major disaster or financial meltdown, and there will be blood flowing. I swear sometimes high prices alone lure prople in.

If you are still crying over ammo supply, then you are looking for it in the wrong stores and have not secured a supplier who has no trouble acquiring the ammo you need. I'm good with what I have but do need to resupply some black powder for my muzzle loaders before next season. If you are in the business, then hoarding is called planning ahead. For those not in the business?

Was out on the Spyder this PM with my wife and we happened to stop into a WM she knew of along the way and what to my eyes should I see......Federal 115 gr. fmj 9mm ammo. Yes boys and girls 9mm ammo. 7 boxes of 50...limit 3 per visit....$13.97 plus tax! Best price for 9 I've seen in months. Paid for my 3 and hurried out. They had .22 ammo too but didn't check out price and limit cause I have enough for now. Lucked out a second time when we pulled in the garage about 5 minutes before a MAJOR thunder storm came rolling thru.

This past ammunition shortage is opening a lot of eyes, and showing what supply and demand is capable of. I once read that during the California Gold Rush in the 1850's, a new Colt revolver sold in and around San Francisco for over $360.00 at the time. In Hartford, Conn. the same gun could be had in quantity for $38.00.
