I would like to build a SBR in 9MM but will also be applying to make my lower eligible to take a .40, 45ACp, .223 and .300 upper receivers (why not.) After I get my stripped lower I will be adding the trigger, trigger guard selector switch and pistol grip. As for the buffer tube and spring, do I need to do anything special depending on which upper I select, or would a buffer tube and spring for a 9MM upper work just fine as it would for any of the other calibers I might select? Is my assumption correct that if I get complete uppers in the different calibers that there would be nothing else to do to the lower to accept them? Aside form the magazine, of course. Thank you in advance!

you will have to play with the spring, but thats it.

If you want to switch between carbine and rifle I know you need to change buffers and springs, between pistol calibers you should be OK with one set of buffer assy.
Changing between rifle and pistol calibers I don't know other than I have never seen an assy designated "for pistol calibers" .

When you say SBR, is that a restricted class?
Just wondering. If you have a receiver that is classed as a rifle, you cannot use parts to make it a pistol...and vice versa....
Was wondering if the same might apply to and SBR lower? If that is what you get specified?

SBR = Short barreled rifle
SBS = Short barrel shotgun
Yes, solus they are classes of NFA items.
You are correct that a pistol receiver has to have never been a rifle, how ever Paraguy is referring to pistol caliber carbine not an AR based pistol.

Oh..I knew it wasn't a pistol....I just wondered if the relationship between a licensed SBR receiver and a long barreled rifle upper might be the same as between a licensed pistol receiver and a long barreled rifle upper.
Licensed Pistol receiver + long barreled rifle upper = NoNo

I don't know how to apply logic to the question. It still boggles me to know that two legal Contenders can both become illegal by swapping legal parts between them.

you can convert a pistol to a rifle with out a stamp, 16" + barrel then but stock. you can't go the other way with out a aow stamp. is thier a place for cal and/or lenght on the form for a sbr? If yes, I would say you are good for what you write down and nothing else. If not idk.

The plan is to buy a lower through my NFA trust, fill out a BATF Form and send in my $200 to get it a tax stamp. In my "design" for the lower it will include short barreled uppers for several calibers so I can switch them out without all of the paperwork, $$$ and time for each one.
My plan is to buy a stripped lower and NOT buy an upper nor be able to create an SBR with parts I have at home to ensure I could not be in compliance. If you have the parts for an SBR but do not build it you are still technically breaking the law.Are they silly laws? Yes. I am going the civil disobedience route to make a point and risk 10 yrs in jail and a $250,000 fine? No Way!
The plan is to have a 10.5" 9mm and .223 upper for my registered and stamped BATF approved lower. I am not sure of the problems when I build it associated with the short barrel and the 9mm; I am only experienced working with 16" .223 in the AR platform.
